a flight of 38's was on its way to europe, they crashed were found in a glacier(I think in greenland) and refurbished, the birds were in excellent 'frozen in time' condition far as I recall....

There was a documentary about it on, I think, the WINGS channel. The expedition took years, and they were only able to bring back one of the P-38s, and it took them many years more to restore it. None of the birds were in pristine condition when found. Quite the contrary. And they were buried way beneath the surface of the glacier. Quite an undertaking, if you ask me!

Yeah I saw that special as well Chief. Sounds like they had some chain of command issues as well which probably added to the time.lol

Those planes were crushed under the moving ice for all those years its amazing they are still in the condition they were in. Didnt they have to melt all that ice away before they could get it out?

Hey Seawolf

They used a device that melted its way down to the aircraft. The hole was only a few feet in circumference, and very deep in the ice. They had to bring up the aircraft in many pieces. Talk about dedication! I don't know if I would have the desire to go through what they did. And the cost was unbelievable.
