Lt. James Cater Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I was thinking of this last night. In your opinion...What is the hardest and easiest aircraft to do a tour in considering that time, place, and opposition you will have to deal with? From my experience, the hardest plane i ever had to take into battle was the Hawker Hunter. The disadvantages you face make it quite a challenge to go up in this one. Mainly, inferior top speed to it's opponents, no AAMs, no radar and rather limited gun ammo compared to other fighters. I'm thinking of trying another round with this one even though i know the odds are stacked against my Squadron. A number of my fellow pilots got shot down while heading home by MIGs which overhauled them from the rear after we disengaged. In WOV flying a Thud is no joke considering the fact that you have to throw yourself into the teeth of the enemy defenses time after time. In a typical tour you'll probaly be up in pack 5 and 6 about 70 times. The easiest? A-10!... I'm currently flying one and compared to all the other situations i've been in it's a piece of cake so far. Sure, i've had my plane damaged, but compared to what i've seen in the past it's a cakewalk. Tough construction, two engines, HUD, ECM, plenty of chaff, standoff weapons....What's not to love of the situation? For example, i'm doing routine strike missions which would have been considered rather hairy in WOV when you take into account the defenses involved. So what do you all think? Quote
kukulino Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 (edited) The easiest plane for me is F-15. With its Lima and Mike Sidewinders and later Sparrows, strong ECM and hundrets of faffs/chlares it is easy fly it and shoot down oponets. Hardest plane for me is Seafire 47. Hard for its carrier land tactics. It has long nose, so I need land from curve. Hardest part of every mission. Good plane for normal flight, but danger for landing. In the dogfight is Mig-23MF/ML hard for me. I use updated HUD by Gepard, plus some my edits and this help a lot. I use neles FMs. So hit and run is the best tactics probable. But Mig-23 (except Mig-23MLD) is not equiped with chaffs/flares, so it is easy target for enemy all aspect Sidewinders and later Sparrows. -------------- Very good feeling I have in Mirage factorys Mig-21F-13. No radar, no radar or laser or Tv guided weapons. Just mad IR R-3S and 30 rounds in cannon With Paladrians great cockpit it is really exciting adventure fly this mig version. Amokfloos Mig-21UM is great too And if I want kick some Eagles or Falcons or Hornets or whatever from bad guys, I fly Marcfighters superb Su-27 Edited August 8, 2008 by kukulino Quote
column5 Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I've always found the F-104 to be extremely difficult to get kills in. Quote
MigBuster Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 A-10 is almost in the F-15/16 category for WOE easyness as you say - your main enemy in stock campaigns is forgetting to put wing leveler on before making a cuppa :) - also the 2 AIM-9Ls it has mean death to all AI jets. I have done quite a few Hunter campaigns in the past - mainly because it is a more interesting challenge - in WOE stock campaign you tend to get out numbered, and its range is poor/ poor weps load/no power - often have to start running early due to fuel - thats before you realise that you are totally outclassed by the Mig-17F - and you can be caught out! - My squadron suffer very badly in Hunters - CAS isnt that much fun either tbh Quote
Rambler 1-1 Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 I find the easiest plane to get a kill in is the Tomcat, or maybe the F-4S. Half the time I don't even have to engage the the MiGs, just launch off some sparrows or Phoenixes BVR. and, uhhh, is that James Carter, as in James Carter from Rush Hour? Quote
column5 Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 One thing I've noticed while working on the new F-14B is that it is a lot more difficult to survive in the high-threat environment over 1990s Syria and Lebanon than it was over enemy territory in previous games. However I have the Tomcat's ECM set to what I think is a realistic strength of 65, and I notice a lot of other mods using super-high ECM values (80+ in some cases) which might make things a little too easy. gbnavy61 Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 Easiest I've experienced so far is the Tomcat - though I typically FLY NAVY and don't much bother with the rest. Tomcat's got the BVR reach and also the speed, power, maneuverability, and countermeasures to get around most threats. The F-8 is also pretty easy to fly and fight with. I've been shot down a few times, mostly from being out of missiles and trying to make a guns run on a tail-gun equipped bomber - not my favorite thing to do. Once, though, I did experience a realistic Crusader bite-you-in-the-ass-ism. I was coming in behind this MiG for a guns pass and realized a little too late that I was going to overshoot. Trying to salvage what I could and stay behind him, I popped the boards out, and tried a pulling roll off to one side - it had worked for me before. This time, I think I pulled a little too hard and the sucker departed and was spinning about half a second later. There I was falling to earth with about 1000' between me and the mountain top. Only enough time to mutter some obscenity and pull the handle. Quote
