Apologies if this has been discussed before, I did search the forum first. I've been flying a campaign in the DrI recently and I've noticed that I'm getting sent on missions that are way beyond the range of the triplane at 100% fuel load, sometimes twice as far. I always hit optional mission but they all seem to be too long too. I end up just flying out to the front for a while to see if anything turns up, shoot up some ground objects and then return. The missions are usually escort missions to bomb airfields.

 

I've read some of the posts about conserving fuel on flights but this seems beyond that. It's not a big issue for me as I work around it but was just wondering if others encountered this phenomena (the impossible demands of HQ). :no:

I've seen this sometimes, both in Entente and German campaigns. It's of course worse for the aircraft with a limited range, and I think the Dr.I has one of the shortest. But it's no big deal to skip such missions or take off and just do some flying close to the front and see whether you can shoot down something. That's what I usually do in such situations. Besides, I think it is far too dangerous to embark on a mission that clearly demands more fuel than your plane can possibly carry and try to fly by playing with the mixture. If you fail, the worst case scenario (and the most likely - Murphy's Law!) is that you run out of fuel far behind the enemy lines...

Yep cycle through missions for shorter one, lean out the engine and reduce throttle- especially before warping, and land at a nearer/forward airbase on return leg

Thanks everyone. All good advice. I had been using the lean mixture keys a lot just to boost engine performance at higher elevations. I pretty much have tried all of these suggestions. It's good to get confirmation that throttling down before warp does have an impact. You've definitely confirmed that it's a common challenge.
