I thought about posting this under UK_Widowmaker’s thread, “Anyone know how to make a Screensaver?”, but didn’t want it to get lost in the shuffle. Here is some free software that may help people with their creative endeavors.

OpenOffice

http://www.openoffice.org/

OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.

Audacity

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

GIMP

http://www.gimp.org/

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

I upgraded my video card from a 8800GTS to a EVGA 285GTX and trying to play mpeg2 videos would result in a BSOD and a reboot. InterVideo would play DVD’s which are mpeg2’s and it would play all other mpeg2 files. An internet search pointed me to a codec issue. I found this EVGA forum: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=223882

I downloaded GSpot here: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

And followed the instructions in the post and now I can play mpeg2 videos.

A couple of my favorites free programs:

Audacity media editor (mentioned above)

Convert -Unit conversion program that will convert the most popular units of distance, temperature, volume, time, speed, mass, power, density, pressure, energy and many others, including the ability to create custom conversions! (click here)

Here's another of my free favorites, Clipboard Helper

Clipboard Helper enhances the Windows clipboard. It will put together all text fragments that you have copied to clipboard and will save them in a single file. Increases productivity with at least 400%.

I always donate something to programs like these that I tend to use a lot.. even a few dollars can help.

i have used audacity in rb3d days to alter soundeffects or to make my own ringtones for my cell. nice little tool. does anybody know if there is a similar tool, which can make doppler effects on sound files? you can make wah wah sound, phaser sound and stuff like this from normal soundfiles, but i would like to have an option to simulate doppler. if i would find a sort of tool, i would try to tinker around with the extern aicraft engine sounds.
