+ordway Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 (edited) I have almost finished five or so different Mig-23 cockpits with Starfighter 2s Mig-23 HUDs: Mig-23M (First production version-old style cockpit with included radar hood). Mig-23MS (Supremely dumbed down "M" export version-old style cockpit with included radar hood-Type used by Israelis for target practice over the Bekaa Valley-uses Mig-21MF avionics). Mig23P Special PVO old cockpit version with datalinks all over the HUD and including a radar hood). Mig-23MLA Later PVO version with massive data linking and radar projected on HUD and no radar hood). Mig-23MLD Final Mig-23 version with no radar hood and snappy avionics but no data linking. Early Mig-23 versus Mig 21MF cockpit for comparison: Can you guess which is which? EDIT- I found out that this is closer to a Mig-23S - June 1972. Mig-23MLD cockpit- Last production version (Edit-I added this after first post). Edited June 28, 2009 by ordway Quote

+ordway Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 (edited) And your basis for this work was drawn cabin MiG-21 (?) 1) They were almost exactly the same (bunch of copy cats). 2) The beautiful Mig-21MF cockpit has already been done and was a base for the early version (not the later one). 3) I am not skilled enough to make a complete cockpit from scratch that is so similar to the Mig-21MF cockpit. 4) The later Mig-23 cockpits dump the radar hood and get a different cockpit with radar "on the HUD" (if you can call the Sovs idea of a HUD). 5) I had a hell of a time, as it was, making the suckers even work with Starfighter 2's 4-5 different HUDs (a month). +ordway Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 (edited) Looking great  For the MLD can we get rid of the pesky camera ? That is an issue. The later Mig-23 variants still had a pole sticking out in front of the pilot for the (gun camera?)...but no attached can. So I would need to draw a pole somehow or just keep the gun camera there. Note "pole" sticking out in front of the pilot on this late model version with the attached "can" missing. The gunsight *does* have a horizontal "grill" (what is that, anyone?). All understood. Slightly clarify: a well-made MiG-21 cockpit, not only for the version of the "MF", but also for the "bis", and even if I am not mistaken (can not check now, because the problem with your computer) to "S" ... Simply using the cabs for the MiG-21 MiG-23 picture spoils the appearance of the locking bar open to the lamp ... Quote

Erwin_Hans Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Good work! It is a very good idea to make a MiG-23MS cockpit from MiG-21S/SM/M/MF pit. But I saw two promblem. The first one is MiG-23MS have no HUD. And the second...I'm not sure about the beautiful Mig-21MF pit... It looks very close to the MiG-21MF-75 pit,and MF-75 used a MiG-21Bis cockpit... So I'm not sure if it is MF or MF-75... Quote

So how do we remove the "can" part but leave the pole part of the "gun camera?" I've been away and will get back to all the other excellent posts and suggestions in this thread. Quote

+Brain32 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 I'm pretty sure atleast some M's had Saphir21, meaning 21MF pit could be used, might be an interim solution until they got Saphir23, I'm not sure... Quote
kukulino Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Mmm, we have Mig-21 cockpit without radar scope too... In great AmokFloos Mig-21UM. There is included Paladrians very nice Mig-21UM pit. From my point of view it is not necessary use Su-17 pit for Migs. Just my opinion. Quote

I don't like using the Su-17 pit either...it looks rather like a B-52 cockpit...a bit big looking for a tiny Mig-23 pit. Off to my drawing board again. But I feel better about it. Quote

+The Trooper Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 The MiG-21MF pit looks closer to the MiG-23 one and it has working SPO-10 RWR. If you can just remove the radar scope... Quote

However, a seeming fatal problem with the Mig-21MF pit is "putting the radar on the HUD" which the SU9 cockpit has (more or less). Quote

Too bad we can't use a transparent .tga for a radar background! Very nice! Yes, it needs to be refined like the SU-7 cockpit so that the radar only occupies the top part and is barely visible like the SU-7. Edited June 29, 2009 by ordway Quote
