Help! Received Runtime Error. Need Fixed!

Recommended Posts

Ok,

I downloaded a file last night that "hijacked" my browser settings. All of a sudden, instead of going to my homepage of "Google", it changed to "searchonline". Not only would it not allow me to change back to Google, but it prevented me from opening files on my desktop.

Well, after reading about the infection and trying different programs to eliminate it, I finally was able to change my homepage back to Google.

But now I get a "Runtime Error 5 at 0040469D" message upon startup. I am able to exit out of the message, and all SEEMS ok, but this is annoying.

Can anyone offer a solution to this?

Thanks.

get adaware form lavasoft and run that to get rid of these pests. also run a good virus scan.

Spybot might also be of assistance.

Hey Gator,

Thanks for the advice, and good luck on the outcome of your exam!

We used to call taking the CPO exam as the "annual muster". Heh, heh.

I already have Ad-aware, but had not run it. Am doing so now. I did, however, run Norton, and PC-Cillin; both with no luck.

By the way, I reported to VA-83 in 1987. They were just returning from their last A-7 cruise. They did not cruise again until August of 1990. Pretty good planning on my part, eh? Oh, we did plenty of dets though!

At the time there was a Senior Chief named Rodney Hamilton who worked in Maintenance Control. He was quite a character. Always kept us laughing. He was the type who believed that if the work was done, you secured and went home. Of course there were many other M/C CPOs who believed that if one workcenter stayed, then everyone did.

Anyway, I will let you know if Ad-Aware fixes the Runtime error.

I also ran Spybot, but it didn't find anything.

Whats that new hardware?

Make sure you do a complete uninstall of the file. You might also want to use Norton to quarentine it before you do. Also, I think there's a way you can go to a system backup and reboot your system to the way it was before that file was downloaded. Maybe not. Anyways, definatly quarentine the file with Norton, at least.

I also use this:

http://www.safer-networking.org/

Spybot and Spyware Blaster are completely compatible and work extremely well together. Spybot found stuff on my rig that Adaware didn't pick up. Spyware Blaster, and a portion of Spybot, are immunizers. Keep up with the updates and you'll live a happier life.

I remember senior hamilton. chewed my ass when I went and stole a part out of one of your left over a-7s for ours(VA-174). We now call it the annual meeting of the minds. I am on instructor duty at namtra oceana. Got 2 months left then it is off to sea again. Going out on USS Wasp LHD-1. marines and helos and harriers for the next three years. OOOOHHHHHH RRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHH

Not....lol I made board last two times and I have a strong package. AT1(AW/SW) master training specialist and all that jazz. My dad was chief way back so I hope to also someday be initiated

looks like u have something trying to install hardware wise. did u hook up a new usb device ? I would disco all items except keyboard mouse and monitor and restart to see if that is coming up. IF not then you know there is a windows error. iof so then u mostlikey have some sort of hijack trying to happen. That error could be for a virtual drive being setup for a the hijack.....

not sure though????

add me to your msn or icq and we will get in touch later today and i can help you out. icq: 5629363

Also, depending on which version of Windows, you might be able to solve using a old restore point.

Well, I have Spyblaster, but it didn't find anything.

The original problem was the "hijacking" of my IE browser. It changed my homepage to http:/smartsearch.ws WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GO TO THAT SITE! I had not gone there, but some file I downloaded had the virus in it, and it got me.

Anyway, I used CWShredder to get rid of the url, but something else has been affected by the virus; hence the Runtime Error.

The message you see on the screen for "installing new hardware" is because it is trying to load a printer. I have never gotten around to loading it on my Game HD. It is loaded on my C: drive, but I don't need it on my Game Drive. So every time I boot, I get the message. I simply choose cancel, and go on.

The problem I get now, is the Runtime Error message. No idea how to get rid of it.

If it is a Windows problem, I don't know what to do next.

the only thing that might help if all else has been tried without succes is to to go to :

Start>Programs>accesories>system tools>system restore

and select "restore my computer to an earlier time".

You are then taken to a calender and you can select a restore point - either one of your making or n automatically created one. Choose one from before the hijacking.

This has saved me a couple of times. It doens't delete documents and such but might uninstall recently installed programs.

You can allways undo a restoration.

I tried a system restore, but it said it did not have a restore point to go to, and there wasn't one available on the calendar that you choose from.

There's gotta be a way to get to the bottom of this. Problem is, I know just enough about computers to be dangerous. I not EVEN going to make any changes to settings unless I know for certain that it will fix things.

I have really made things worse in the past when I tried to fix computer problems! Usually costs me a lot of money to get things back to normal!

pity you didn't have any restore points - make sure to make one once you get your computer working. That can save you a lot of trouble.

I'm all out of suggestions now... you probably need someone with good understanding of the win.ene and the regestry etc... and thats definately not me

Here's another shot at it. Use the native windows file checker. My computer > appropriate drive (usually C:) > right click on drive > click on properties > click on "Tools" tab > under error checking click on "Check now" > check the box for "automatically fix file system errors" > click "Start" and follow directions.

Make sure that you get your system restore up and running. You must have it turned off.

Oh yeah, and you might also try reinstalling Direct X. That is where a lot of the runtime files are.

Ok, now I have another problem.

Until now, when I selected My Computer, all of the drives in my computer were listed, and I could access files from there.

Not now.

The only drive listed is my Game Drive, F:

If I go to Computer Management, then all the drives are listed, and I can access files that way, but what the H.... is going on?

HELP!

1) Did the runtime error go away?

2) What was the name of the "virus" you found?

No, the runtime error is still there on startup. I click the notice, and it exits. But reappears at startup.

The "Virus", if that is what it is, was something that changed my homepage to:

http:/smartsearch.ws

Again, DO NOT GO TO THAT SITE!!

Bad JuJu.

And, my game drive still does not list my other drives under My Computer. Very strange.

Just trying to get an idea if it was a hijacker or a virus. I'll do some quick research and see what I can find out.
