Digital Download?

Recommended Posts

Greetings Guys,

Just ordered OFF Phase 3 and I've run into a bit of a problem--most likely because I want instant gratification. I want to play the game!

Here's my issue. When you go to purchase the game, you're told that the game itself is delivered electronically for a certain price, and DVD shipping costs are added for a certain price.

I buy a lot of games online, and this usually means that you're purchasing a license that allows you to download the game, and you're being sent a physical copy for an extra fee; however, in this case it seems that I cannot actually download the game.

Am I correct in this assertion? If so I'm very sad. I held off on purchasing the game until my copy of CFS3 arrived via mail (which I purchased specifically for the purposes of getting OFF phase 3) thinking I would be able to download the mod AFTER the game was installed on my PC. I would have placed my order long ago if I knew it was otherwise.

Well I'm hoping I'm wrong, and maybe someone here can help me out. :D

If I'm not though, those in charge should really consider changing what is displayed on the order screen and remove the reference to electronic delivery.

Cheers,

-R

Hi there

Sorry you had trouble there, but there is no mention of a download purchase anywhere on the main OFF site before you go to order.

At the top of every page the graphic shows OFF BH&H DVD..

below that on the BUY page it says

"Summer Special: Currently OFF BH&H DVD is only $29.99 US

+ delivery (+VAT / TAX if applicable in your country)."

No mention of electronic download.

Same on the order FAQ

http://overflandersfields.com/FAQAvangate.htm

The main FAQ top of the page...

http://overflandersfields.com/FAQ.htm#Requirements

What do I need, so I can fly OFF BH&H?

Requirements:

Well firstly you need a PC computer, a joystick, a DVD Drive, Windows XP (32bit), or Windows Vista 32 or 64 ...

just over 15GB of free space on a drive... an urge to fly in WW1 :). Of course you also need to buy OFF BH&H

Also see below for other requirements:.....

Any references to it are from Avangate website - the problem is they normally supply downloads ONLY. We wanted them to provide DVD only, for many reasons I won't go into now (1 being OFF would be MORE than 4GB (DVD is super compressed from 15GB!) Compressed to a rar or zip it would probably be 8GB compressed download). Anyway DVD shipping is compulsary if you notice, if it was download only with optional DVD that would be shown as optional. Either way best to check first if you aren't sure.

"OK so you have the Over Flanders Fields : Between Heaven and Hell DVD

what else do you need?

- Firstly a PC with Windows XP, or Vista 32 or Vista 64,

a joystick, and a DVD drive, a hard drive with 15GB of Hard drive space free

- also Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 is needed.

We'll look at it , we did ask a few times for it to be clearer etc on Avabgate's site, but it's been difficult to do for us as we are unique at the moment. If we offer download in the future we'd need to undo all this, but we shall see.

A DVD ISO is 4.5 GB

A DVD ISO download is 4.5 GB (not 8GB)

(and if you compress the iso file with rar or zip the size of the dvd image will be probably less than 4.5 GB - NEVER 8GB)

Many places have DVD ISOs for download - (TRYGAMES for example)

It was no problem, guys. I finally got the game today, and now I'm ready to jump right in. In reality, I am very bad at flight sims. I can never seem to land without dying a horrible death. :D

But I'm guessing I will give this enough of a shot to figure it out.

As for the original issue, like I said, I was never really upset about it. More that I just wanted to play immediately.

Cheers,

Thanks I do know indeed an ISO is 4.5 GB. However that assumes we have it as an ISO download and not an installer or in parts etc. We then we have to explain how to burn DVDs from an ISO for all PC users with various DVD programs, or none, or.. more support issues. We are a very small team we have to think of everything ;)

As I said the files are extra compressed by the packaging installer and it achieves 5X compression which is pretty amazing. I have never seen RAR do that, but maybe - hence my comments.

Also the data is so compressed it tends to be very senstitive to DVD readers and DVD media. Again something we'd have to support. As I said I won't go into all the reasons but many have been looked into.
