Well, I took a look at the armament of the Mirage IIIC. The original loadout.INI of the MF calls for the SARH missile R-530R. In my wepdata.ini, it had a service start year of 1963. I looked it up on Wikipedia, the English version gives a service start year of 1962 along with a source, the French edition says 1963. But you can also read there that the Matra R-530 was an evolution of the earlier SARH R-511, which was carried by the IIIC too.

I think that is safe to assume that back in the early sixties, if a war NATO vs. WP had broken out, the interceptor squadrons would have received the best available weaponry, so that an edit to modify the woecamp1_data.ini to give the EC 1/13 either the R-530 or at least the R-511 from the campaign start shouldn't be considered as "cheating"... and help fighting those Beagles.

Now this is more like it!

Took two flights on a sweep. Gathered everyone at 20,000ft and then headed out while climbing to 30,000ft. On the radio, we could hear all kinds of action going on all across our sector of the front. Very little of it was good news as the Reds seem to have the upper hand today.

About 10 miles short of Holzdorf, we got into a fight with a pair of MIG-19s. My wingman and i went after the leader and it quickly became apparent that this Russian was more than averagely skilled. He got two of our guys despite all our efforts to get him. I myself had the most difficulty in keeping him in my sights but finally was able to have him in the right spot and shot him down with the guns. His wingman was as agressive but not as skilled. Nonetheless, he almost got me from head on during my initial pass. It took a bit of doing but i got in behind him and waited until he came across the nose of my plane and i had him also.

After collecting everyone and heading back to a decent altitude we got a call from ground control as to bearing to some enemy not too far away.

From the response to questions posed to Control, it was obvious that the enemy were landing at a nearby base. So off we went, down from our lofty perch to hunt for the Reds.

It turned out to be a pair of MIG-21s and i took full advantage. I had a missle left and went almost down to the trees to get in perfect position for a launch. At a mile and a half i heard the lock indicator and i let fly. The MIG flew on just like on a target range and i got him! My first success with a missle! His parachute was visible as he ejected and i stared for a second or two before switching attentions to the second '21. I pulled away hard to avoid an overrun and waited to see his reaction. It was just what i thought. Too low on fuel to do anything but try to land as quickly as possible.

So i helped him get to earth a little sooner. Back on the throttle and came in to near point blank range from his dead 6 and fired a short burst.

Very nice to have made Ace and celebrating with champagne, but my wingman, 1LT Daniel Gautheir and #4 of the second flight 2LT Leo De La Chapelle are missing in action.

I hope they made out ok and are on their way back to us soon.

Made a successful intercept of some YAK-28s but stayed a little too long in the area. Met up with some enemy fighters and lost four planes, two of them in the landing pattern after we made a run for it.

The damn Yankee missles are killing us as sure as the Red guns.

Within another week, we shall be wiped out.

Flt Lt Graham or should I say Squadron Leader Graham has completed his 19th and 20th Sorties successfully...

Well today was the last 2 sorties and the diary simply states Survived...

Well Sortie 19 was simple straight forward fighter sweep 8 of us of the survivors of the Squadron took to the skies and wiped it clean and then some more the Red's where thin on the ground or should that be air... We pounced on what looked like an entire Squadron of blasted Floggers well it was very soon a Squadron of smoking holes in the ground... all 12 of them... Without loss to our 8 which was a surprise but the 2 flights where made up of the Squadron killers and survivors... So out and back and collapse... 2 more Mig's to the Tally for the price of 2 Sidewinders...

Sortie 20 was my standard fourship fighter sweep over the enemy lines not looking for much trouble as apprently its supposed to be all over but a 4 ship of Mig-23's came up to play and down they went 1 each we resumed course for Berlin as the orders stated even though GCI said we where cleared to RTB we stayed up as we where all still fat with fuel and weapons and there was a flight of A-10's without cover dealing some damage to a Red Army Tank battalion. This was ideal as 4 Mig-31's came screaming at us before I could order attack I had tone and promptly shot all four with face shot Sidewinders... After this we where given recall orders back to base once we landed we where told that the Red's had surrender we had stopped them but at what cost... Now its just a case of sitting and waiting the launch order the boss lady has declared that we have 4 jets on alert in case the Reds pull a fast one...

post-4136-12676536781179.jpg

This was the final tally of all our losses and our kill's

post-4136-12676536987188.jpg

Well that was it it did get a bit boring sometimes I will admit just going up and shooting at Mig-23's but thats what I signed for as I know the Tornado F-3 very well its all Air to Air Interceptor... But at the same time it was fun... I think my next one is going to be in the NF4+ flying a more attack orientated Jet or maybe even a Weasel...

Hope this has kept you entertained...

Cheers it was fun but dogfighting Mig-29's or Su-27's in a Tornado is only for those who are certifiably insane...

Right as I don't think anyone's done one yet well not published here I am going to run with a Recon Rhino... No shooting and no dropping bombs... how hard can that be...

NF4+

I have to be mad pal raving mad...

The funny thing is i was considering the same thing. Doing it in WOE is something else, but in the ODS mod it's in a class of it's own when it comes down to a sheer challenge.

Yeah thats what I was thinking of as well but with NF4+ life is very very interesting as you have a whole setup of Air Defence weapons... from SA-2's up to Su-27's the SAM's I am not too worried about but the Flankers I am... But saying that I am thinking that a pure recce mission is too much so am thinking of going Weaseling instead...

Late OCT to early NOV62

It's been nonstop flying and fighting. We are lucky not to be having men dead seeing as some of them now have more time in the silk than some paratroopers.

The war is going badly. The Russians have got the front virtually cut in half with a massive salient. All our gestures seem useless. We received some supplies and a number of air to ground weapons are now available.

Are things so bad that we are now going to be used for bombing?

The enemy has a brilliant strategy of making those incessent low level raids. Our aircraft are limited in their performance near the ground. Up high we can fight, but the Reds rarely fly higher than the trees. No matter, we are betrayed by the makers of that putrid Aim-9. If it worked as it was advertised, we should have triple the kills at least. Now they are virtually dead weight with success far and in between.

I will continue to do my duty to France, but i have no hope in victory. All i can do is to shoot down as many of the enemy as i can before the end.

As of this moment my score is at 13.

Okay my second DiD... Again NF4 but this time its the + Version SFE2.

Pilot 2nd LT Tony "Scooby" Franklin

23rd TFS Spangdalm

Aircraft F-4G

Mission Weasel

Well been on base for around 2 weeks, introduced to my bear Major Chuck "Berry" Schmidt and how the guy gets in the back is beyond me the guy is bigger than most football players and he ain't wearing the padding, and done a couple of Famil sorties. Thankfully my bear knows his way round the back seat like he knows his own hand... Well it was a good morning today and was ready to go for my first look round the local area on land instead of in the air, as we have been on alert since I got here and what happens the Red's go nuts and decide on taking on the rest of the world... and there was me thinking the politico's are out to save our hides... How the first red air strike missed our base I don't know apperently they got zapped on the way over by 24 F-15's running block on them...

Well I got my first sortie thrown at us even though it should have been routine anything with Fulda in it isn't going to be routine... Me and another Newbie got tasked with flak suppression over the gap taking out gun's...

Loadout was 2 Harm's 2 Maverick's Centre Tank 3 Sparrow and the boss made sure we had 4 winders each in other words enough to cause trouble for anyone...

Take of was straighforward and we headed for the area at .9 mach and 10000ft as we got nearer (seemed like second's to get there) we picked up a zip gun near a factory transmitting so I got 2 to take it and dang that Harm sure is pretty coming of the rail... and down goes one Zip gun me I was worried about SA-10's but thats how we agreed to play it anyway 2 goes down to work over a gun site and the Bear locks up a SA-13 and I shoot that sucker dead with a Maverick. Just as we are getting into our stride all hell broke loose Mig's all over the sky Su-25's coming in to drop on Friendly ground Falcon's and Eagles running top cover I manged to line up a Su-25 and shot him dead with a Sidewinder glad I was carrying those... broke back in to fire my remaining Maverick and to use my Harm's when a Mig-21 shoots past after my number 2 so I reefs round and nail's him with a second winder.

Number 2 now breaks into another attack with a Maverick on a gun and kill's that... Me I have lined up and killed another Zipper gun and extended out of area when I head my wingie shout he's getting shot up and he's punching out... He made it but is injured his bear made it as well and is not injured thankfully for the both I turn back in and we loft the 2 Harm's at a pair of targets killing a SA-2 Fan Song and another SA-13. We where cleared home but it was looking bad down low and I was pretty confident of by dogfighting abilities so I turned in to help a pair of F-16's who where trying to lay the hurt on some Russkie tanks... Which garnered me with 3 more kill's 2 Mig-21 and a Mig-23. Then the creme de la creme turned up and pointed it's nose in my direction and the pucker factor went through the roof... here's me a rookie and a bear against the red devil Su-27 he pop's a missile at me but the chaff and flares decoy it away while I pop one at him from below and its perfect even an Su-27 can't fly after being hit with an AIM-7F from below, I noticed he was pumping out chaff but it looked like his plane was masking it... Anyway after that I headed home at 50ft down a road between the tree's with an Su-27 chasing me... The 2 F-16's I helped out earlier came back into picture and dealt with that guy for me... so we made it home okay after that after flying for 25 miles out of the battle area popped up to 5000ft as advised and landed back at base... The bossman thinks I am nuts but all the bear say's is "yup you'll do at least you listen..."

Sorry no picks was too busy flying the rhino...

Lt., I like to see that Mirage IIIC, it's so cool! good.gif

Congrats Slartibartfast, you've made it!

(don't want to fly for the RAF anymore?)

Anyway the F-4G is a piece of art too.

8th mission

2Lt Sean Rosewood

87th FIS, Wiesbaden-Erbenheim – F-106A Delta Dart

11/07/68

Take off : 12.23 – Landing : 13.24

Target : Neuburg, Intercept

5 IL-28s

Memphis 11 : 2Lt Sean Rosewood

Memphis 12 : 2Lt Norman Howenton

Memphis 13 : Capt Rolland Kullman

Memphis 14 : 1Lt Eldon Rose

Memphis 21 : Maj Richard Howerton

Memphis 22 : 2Lt Jerry Watson

Memphis 23 : 1Lt Gordon Smallwood

Memphis 24 : 2Lt Kelly Wells

Report :

2 sections to Neuburg, to intercept a bomber raid.

Today, we were very professional. We focused on the targets and made the intercept in time. I shot down 2 bombers with AIM-4F and then the 2 sections broke up to engage different targets. Maj Howerton went after fighters and we stuck to bombers. I tried to shot down another one using IRM, but I acted in a hurry to prevent friendly fire. I managed to shot down another IL-28 but the last one escaped. Memphis 12, 13 and 14 went after him. They hit him but he was still flying. I was Winchester and the guys were just looking at the damaged Beagle, without doing anything. “Shoot him!”, “One, Roger…”, “Copy”, but nothing, they were just following him. I can’t believe that!

I called to form up and we went back to base. Two MiGs were ahead of us and I invited section two to go after him… Only one guy attacked and the closest MiG escaped. What a lack of aggressiveness!

After landing, I was informed that 2Lt Norman Howerton did shot down 2 IL-28s and made ace. That has softened my mood.

A rather routine intercept except for the fact that there were only a pair of unescorted IL28s. Shot down one, damaged the other and as soon we got the call from control we went into our new evasion tactic. Turn due west and flee at top speed while climbing up to at least 30,000ft as soon as possible. Up there we can outrun anything the enemy has until they have to turn back from lack of fuel.

As noted before, when at altitude we are more than a match for the foe, but getting to them high up is the problem. The Reds love to be near the earth where their turning performance is superior.

Interesting thing we found out from Intelligence. Apparently, a Mig 19 i shot down a while ago was piloted by one of their aces, a Major Vishnyakov. The interesting part is of his kills, four of them were from our squadron. Too bad i didn't kill him since he scored duel victories both times we've we met and he seems to have an extraordinary feel for his aircraft. In a wild scrum, i would hate to have him show up.

Well another sortie notched up and this was a weird one...

1 x F-4G

4 Sidewinders

2 Sparrow

2 Harm

Centreline Tank

ECM pod

Assigned to do a recon over the lines apprently for it was an Electronic Recon looking for Radar's in an area to hot for a standard Electronic Recon... Well my jet was prepped and ready when I got there but I still did the standard walk round and the Bear checked HIS babies (The AGM-88's) and we prepped for a single ship flight which was worrying at first but then after my previous flight losing a wingie it was probably the best. Take off and flight out standard setup as the Bear setup his gear in the back... All my questions answered with Fly the plane... After 30 mins or so we get intot he area and immediately fire a Harm at a Fan Song F thats lit us up and fired a pair of SA-2's at us missile scores a direct hit. We do our thing and pick up all sorts of Intel for the Intel pukes back at base and then as the Bear put it we where on our own time. An SA-6 popped up and we fired the second Harm for no result on our way out of the area, thankfully it didn't shoot at us. This sortie was an easy milk run considering no Enemy air and 1 SA-2 site firing at us... Roll on the next one...

6/7NOV/62

We fight on even as the endpoint is near.

During these two days we lost five pilots dead.

Capt Henri Gras, 1LT Aldo Gouby ,and 2LTs Jehan Iribarne, Michel Chesani and Alexandre Armarger. There are only five of us left able to fly.

Major Joire got made ace, for what it's worth. The enemy now swarms over us and area is virtually defenseless. They are at the doors of Bonn, already having taken Hamburg in the north. One more push and they will overrun the most important remaining bases in the central sector. After that it is a mere formality.

I find myself increasingly looking over the maps and seeing where i should take the plane to keep it and myself from falling into the hands of the enemy. I strongly doubt that they would have any leniency towards one who has destroyed a number of their aircraft.

Having upload quota hassles AND WOE failed on me before i as i was acceptin the results of a mission. Luckily, the results stood or i would have been just a bit upset!

On 8 and 9 November we did did another intercept that we failed and a succesful fighter sweep over the Berlin area.

The intercept was much the usual....Missles failing, resorting to guns, running out of ammo, and then fleeing from the enemy fighters lost a Mirage on that one. Unfortunatly, a Mig 21 got him since he made a feeble attempt to reach altitude instead of standing the plane on it's nose and climbing like a rocket.

The Berlin mission was both wonderful and frustrating. Wonderful in that the Reds lost heavily in some massive brawls, frustrating in that NATO headquarters waited until we are at such a condition before agressively taking the fight to the enemy.

1LT Denis Moret and myself were all that could be sent and so off we went. After join up we went high to save fuel and give us the the advantage of speed at altitude. The number of flights checking in with control was staggering. If only we did this every time!

Well, there was a big fight going on northeast of Berlin and cantrol was giving us multiple options as who we wanted to go after because the enemy was everywhere from the ground to 30,000ft. Where the radar contacts were most is where we went!

Closing in we dropped tanks and dove down into the maelstrom. Sure enough we found a Mig-17 on the fringes of the action and engaged him. This Red was a real artist, flying his aircraft in such a way as to only give us the most difficult shots. Everytime he straightened out long enough to get a proper aim or to even considering using a missle, he pulled his plane around in a manner that just had to be admired. He had a wingman in the fight also, but there is no way that he could have gotten a shot off with all the manuvering Moret and i were pulling off.

Finally, the artist made an error.

Perhaps he decided to run for it or who knows the reason, but he went all out and tried to run for it. I decided to chance a missle and so switched to one and quickly got a good tone and about one and a half miles and closing fast. Moret was coming in from his six high just as i released the weapon. It tracked true but i was worried about Moret when the Mig went into a dive, perhaps reacting to Denis's attack. Too late!

Our attention then turned towards his wingman. His skill wasn't that of his lead and Moret dispatched him with a cannon burst quickly after i missed with a poor missle shot.

There were more enemy in the vicinity but we did our jobs and did not want to over stay our welcome.

As soon as i had us pointed in the right direction, high up we went and home. Many Migs had a chance at us but none could match or climb or speed at altitude.

9th mission

2Lt Sean Rosewood

87th FIS, Wiesbaden-Erbenheim – F-106A Delta Dart

11/08/68

Take off : 13.23 – Landing : 14.34

Target : Wittstock, Sweep

1 MiG-17, 1 An-12

Buick 11 : 2Lt Sean Rosewood

Buick 12 : Capt Clifton Massen

Report :

What a mission!

This time, just a couple of fighters to perform a sweep over Wittstock. It was a long range flight over the enemy lines, and I don’t feel comfortable with that, so just a 2 planes flight is all right for me. 2Lt Watson was to be my wingman, but I told him that I will take Capt Massen with me and Jerry said “Ok, but the next time I come with you”. I’d like Capt Clifton Massen would shot down his 5th bandit, so he would made ace and maybe stop taking too much risks, involving his wingman through free hunting while I ask them to join up formation…

The weather was sunny today and it would be a very important thing for what to be next. Take off and entering the sweep area, we were told to RTB. What to do? I said to Capt Massen “there’s spots ahead, we go for one and only pass and we bugger off, okay?” Sure…

I locked on the bandit right ahead of me, thinking that Massen would launch his missiles before me, and it would be perfect. But Massen called “SAM launched!”. Ok, I see the SAM and it’s not coming toward us, no big deal… “F…, it’s turning, it’s locked on us”. “Two break! Break!” and I went to a tight turn, blinding me and almost stalling the plane. I recovered my Six diving to the ground and decided to give up the hunt. But Massen didn’t want to runaway like that and stayed near Wittstock to search for a target. I thought he was right and asked to Tactical Control for a target on the way back home. And there was one. “Buick lead, Control, there might be a transport, to the east”. Okay, I made a 120° turn and set a course to intercept this interesting target, keeping in mind that Massen should take it out. The plane was easy to see, it was drawing a black smoke trail, it was already damaged. The problem was that Massen was too far to shoot at him so I decided to do that myself, because I realized that there were fighters on their landing approach. (Damaged cargo and landing fighters, I felt like shooting at eggs in the nest.) Launching a missile to shoot down the slow cargo wasn’t that easy and I overtook him twice, it was an Antonov-12 Cub, and the second time I noticed that the tail gunner was shooting at me, “no good Sean, be wise!” I noticed too that a MiG-17 was closing to me and asked Massen to shoot him down. “No joy” he answered me. WTF!!! I finally hit the Antonov with my two last missiles and Massen engaged a MiG, at last! As I was staring at others SAM launches, I heard Massen “I got him! I got him!” What a relief… We went southbound, flying low to avoid SAMs and landed safely.

It was my first encounter with SAMs and I must say that it scared the s… out of me! Capt Clifton Massen made ace and I feel proud to serve with such fighter pilots.

Yes Cliff,

SAM can really ruin your day! All things considered it's probaly the worst thing we have to deal with.

10NOV62

Interesting mission to say the least!

Had an intercept of Reds heading to Ramstein and scored big this time. Took only a single wingman and away we went. Got to them about 30 miles from the target and waded into them. Turns out the bomb carriers were Mig-21s and so we didn't have to worry about gunners. My wingman got one before being shot down by the escorts, i got four before running out of gun ammo. Of course the missles failed again.

And it looks like that's the end of my campaign. I've just run into the infamous unfixed "WOE campaign fail bug" that comes with one of the later patches. It's the third time it's happened to me and i wonder if i'll ever do this in WOE again.

Ended up with 24 kills, 22 via gun. So much for "Modern" weapons.

Pilot 2nd LT Tony "Scooby" Franklin

Well that was short... my pilot is a pow...

Easy sortie Sead killing near Fulda again...

2 F-4G's

2 Harm's

2 Maverick's

Centreline tank

2 Aim-7F

Take off was a breeze and the flight to the area no trouble whatsoever... Killed the SAM's and gun's 3 a piece and turned for home when my wingie got flamed by an Su-27... I honoured the threat with no idea of what I was going to do an F-4G with 2 Sparrow's against a flight of 4 Su-27's and no friendly's anywhere in sight... Well I dragged it down low but kept the speed up and punched of the tank... and went to Radar boresight mode... locked up one Su-27 and popped a Sparrow at him splashing him... but the other 3 ganged up on me and made life hell cannon rounds going off everywhere missile shouts from the bear eventually I was out of Chaff and Flares... Down we went to 50ft AGL and .92 mach to see if we could evade fast and low but this was to no avail as the 3 Flankers could outrun me and out gun me took a hit from an AA-10 Alamo and punched out... Unfortunately we where captured...

Only thing that I was happy about was it took them nearly 15 minutes to shoot me down...

Flying F-100s will be a source of frustration because even if you score well, your squadron will be decimated quickly. Early Mirages are a bit better but the AIM9s will drive you crazy.

The F-102 can be a suprise at times but you really have to be on your toes to keep losses down.

The Sabre varients are the best dogfighters hands down. Intercepts can be a hassle due to lousy missles but the .50s make up for it. It also has a really good range as well.

F-4s make for a nice challenge as you will get a mix of missions to perform.

AI F-104s pilots are basically fodder for MIGs so if you don't care about casualties you can have a nice time.

The TEEN series of fighters tend to be UBER. F-15s in particular tear through the enemy.

The F-5 is overlooked. I've been thinking about that one myself.

Of the strike aircraft, the Gina really makes for a challenge. It's so small that fuel VS payload is a constant thought.

The later A-7 campign is really something due to the ever present SAM threat. Same goes for the Jaguar.

In WOE the only things i've flown are F-111s, RF-4Cs and a EF-111. The Strike and Recce missions are awe inspiringly difficult!

Instead of a new pilot ive decided to keep going with David DePaul.

After the war, the political situation sends him into exile and after some wanderings, ends up in Denmark. Due to his past, he ends up flying F-100s instead of the latest hot plane, the F-104.

In August 1968, the situation turns threatening once again and Depaul flies back into battle with ESK 730.

Slartibartfast, I think about a F-111 myself but there will not be A2A mission.

If you run ODS, what about a F-14 or a FA-18, I mean the US Navy!

Lt., funny idea about David Depaul. I was thinking about the son of Pete Raczesky :)

Well the idea I had was to run an air to ground as my last setup was all air to air... so it balance's it all out...

Maybe an AV-8B sortie oo'rar Marine's... That way its more likely to get into a fight it can win and also seem's as though no-one's done the Harrier route... and I still get to fly British...

First two missions were rather exciting.

21Aug68

The first one could have ended worse. We had a rather milk run strike mission and were on our way home when just ahead of us two AN-12s were crossing our path. I then ordered my flight to get them and went after one. I got him with a few quick bursts and and went after the second. My wingman seemed to have trouble so i bore in firing. I got him and he got me also! I forgot all about the rear guns.

Well, i was virtually out of control and smoking heavily. I pulled back on the throttle and hoped to make it a little farther but flames suddenly appeared in the mirror. FIRE! For a moment i rode the doomed aircraft. Better to perish than bail out and be taken prisoner. Finally the survival instinct took over and i punched out.

Damn it! Shot down for the first time and by some danm fool gunner in a cargo plane!

Luckily, i went down near enough to the front that an Ami helicopter that was rescuing a crew from a shot down F-4 saw me going down and picked me up after recovering the Phantom guys.

Got a few scratches from the shootdown but nothing serious.

23AUG68

A smashing success!

Took off into some lousy weather to help out an armor unit that was under attack. We got to their location a little too late, but we had large numbers of enemy tanks under us and plenty of fuel and ordnance. When all was said and done we accounted for 20 tanks!

I do believe that this F-100 is a fine aircraft provided that you pay strict attention to it's advantages and limitations. As long as we don't over extend ourselve, we should be able to come through this fine.

PS-As soon as i conquer the latest quota problem, i'll post screenshots again.
