OT: District 9

Yes, good ones truely, UncleAl!

I believe, that films like Solaris or Pandorum don't go so well, cause they question our

sanity under extreme situations. And that is agonizing to watch, cause when you can't

trust your own oppinion about a situation, you might be mad - a tantalising situation,

not easy to bear.

That's why I didn't like the late David Lynch (who's "Blue Velvet" was a masterpiece) -

it is about shizophrenia; no pleasure to watch (at least for me).

Right uncleal. We tend to forget the B/W (not Forbidden Planet) but those titles are truly classical. I would also add The Incredible Shrinking Man.

My favorite funny Sci-Fi:

Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension

Brazil

The Ice Pirates

Spaceballs

All the "Robot Chicken" spoofs of Star Wars.

BTW, I saw The Book of Eli yesterday. It's kinda so-so. Good on action, VERY short on dialog (due to all the action) although it does have 1 line that I found hilarious, and somewhat shaky on premise.

My favorite funny Sci-Fi:

Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension

The best movie line of all time "Laugh while you can, monkey boy."

What about Mars Attacks! or Spaced Invaders?

This is getting out of controll!... Candy Samples... :heat:

"Brazil" was bizarre - you wouldn't believe, that Terry Giliam was NOT British! Great movie.

I saw again Outland a couples week ago. It's a outer space High Noon undoubtedly.

However I find that it did aged very well. No problem for me if the remake is good quality.

As for District 9, I would say it was one of the more enjoyable movies I have seen for a long time. The allegory, although simple to see, about man's inhumanity (etc.) is nicely done with a touch of complexity and ambiguity without being preaching in tone; the acting and humour are subtle and self-deprecating - both virtues being not characteristic of many cultures.

Any movie with the line: "I have never had pornographic relations with a prawn!" said with feeling and desperation has to be given at least a 3 stars to before we start counting stars for its other features.

I would gladly watch it again.

And I would gladly like the two hours of my life back that I spent watching Avatar, whose features are close to the opposite of all that I mentioned in the first paragraph ... except that it has NO humour at all.

Regards,

George.
