FuelCell Extent Positions Help?

If I'm reading the Extent Positions correctly, they overlap (cell to cell and engine).My question

 

is will they affect the flight of the aircraft (weight and balance) I know the weight of the fuel

 

is included, but is the position also? Or is the purpose of the Extent Positions just for the game engine to

 

know that a Mig just put 23mm round through your engine and your fuelcell?
