Hi -

I have been away from flight sims for awhile but when I last was playing - WOV was my favorite. I had read many books about the air war in Vietnam and I loved flying those jets but the game had two major faults in my opinion.

Fuel useage was completely unrealistic and the game lacked arial refueling. Has that been addressed in SF2:V?

When I flew an F100 for the USAF or a A4 for the USMC I expected to be flying mostly ground support missions but you were always sent Up North as a part of Rolling Thunder and that just didn't happen. Has this aspect of the game been improved?

I see that the planes flyable seem less than what I had in WOV in that the A6 Intruder is not available other than AI. Is that true... fewer planes in SF2:V?

I did try to find some of this out with some quick forum searches but came up empty so if anyone with experience with both the old and the new Third Wire Vietnam era could comment that would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Fuel usage is still the same and there is no aerial refueling. Most people get around this by setting fuel usage to normal or easy.

The stock game still just has the Rolling Thunder and Linebacker campaigns with a focus on N. Vietnam. However, look at the SF2 campaign download section and look for the SF2V Air and Ground War Expansion Pack (comes in several parts). This adds:

- Steel Tiger and Easter Offensive campaigns that focus on CAS/Interdiction/Strike missions in S. Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

- Lots of additional flyable aircraft - some AI made flyable, some 3rd party. The "AI only" A-6 is made flyable again with this mod.

- Tons of weapons and effects that make North and South Vietnam much more deadly and exciting places to fly.

This mod was created in an effort to rectify just the situation you described. The stock game completely ignores the ground war aspect of the conflict. This mod tries to fix that.

If you still have WoV, there is a version of this mod for WoV (in the SF1 campaigns download section). That way you can try it out and see if you like it. If you do like it, I suggest you buy SF2V and get the SF2V version of the mod since it is the one still being updated and it includes more.

No - This is a sim light, not LOMAC.

No - Addressed by SF2V Air and Ground War Gold Mod

Yes/No - A-6A is only available to AI now, but mods make it available again (see above mod). But there are more aircraft available in terms of correct sub variants, with cockpit and model differences. (Example A-4B and A-4B_65)

Worth the upgrade. Yes, SF2 series have many more features such as mission editor, newer graphics with DX10 support (must have GPU capable of running DX10 as well as Windows Vista or 7), and DLCs.

SF2V has many changes over WOV (which is no longer developed) - many improvements particularly AI - but Thirdwire are not out for all out realism - so A-A refueling is not in the game by default.

F-100s actually flew MiGCap/CAP/RESCAP and escorted F-105s up North at the start of Rolling Thunder - before being replaced in that role for many reasons - so thats okay.

The Marines would have probably flown mainly CAS in support of troops - SF2V still has mainly strategic targets in campaigns like wov - so pretty much the same - there are user made missions etc and campaigns that probably address this.

SF2V actually has more a/c - but the A-6 was dropped as flyable - apparently due to the avionics code they wanted to put in it.

These are new aircraft additions in SF2V that are not in WOV taken from another thread:

A-1H - new model and skins (No Pit)

A-1J - new model and skins (No Pit)

A-7B (71)

A-7C (71)

A-7C - new A-7C model

A-7D - new A-7D model and new unique cockpit

A-7E - new A-7E model and new unique cockpit

F-100D (64) - new model and new unique 1964 cockpit

F-100D (68) - new model and new unique 1968 cockpit

F-105D(66)

F-4B(65)

F-4B(67)

F-4C(67)

F-4D(67)

F-4E(72) - slatted with longer gun muzzle

F-8C

F-8C(66)

F-8D

F-8D(66)

F-8E(66)

F-8H

F-8H(69)

F-8J

F-8J(69)

J-6 - (No Pit)

MiG-17PF - (No Pit)

Thank you for the info!!!

I now have newer PC running Vista but I understand that WOV will run on it so I will try reinstalling WOV and then get the upgrade for that. Sounds like I would enjoy the mods being made for SF2:V so I will likely upgrade if for nothing more than better graphics.

Has anyone tried creating a career as for Sandies in SAR using the A1 aircraft. I loved reading about those guys doing close air support for the Jolly Greens during the rescue missions. Some FAC type career would also be really cool but not sure you can call in air support in any SF based sim.

Thank you again!!!

As far as campaigns go, the game/campaign engine doesn't work in a way that those mission types would work in a campaign. However, scripted single missions can recreate those. I've actually thought about writing some Sandy missions, but I don't have time right now. Maybe that will be something I'll work on once eburger68 and I get the next update out.

PS - while there are no Sandy missions at this time, the next update will include Sandy loadouts for the A-1:
