I am trying to make a solomons campaign for my SF2PAW install. Tell me please, how do strategic nodes work? I am using the solomons V3 map updated with Wrench's updates and stary's visual. So far I havent been able to get the campaign to show in campaign list yet. The one thing I havent done yet is adjust the nodes to reflect the solomons map.

Obviously I need to update nodes to reflect solomons map. I also know units may not be historically accurate. Just trying to make the campaign work right now.

First of all:

 

If the Campaign does not show, check your settings. Your folder name must be the same as the main .ini file of the Campaign, example Solomons.ini.

 

Now to the Nodes:

Strategic notes is pretty much a horrible, sick, twisted game of connect the dots between the two base areas. Once you understand it, it is easy, but simply getting told usually does not create such understanding.

 

There are a few rules to it:

 

1: The two capitols must be connected via the series of connected nodes, or the ground forces have no objective.

 

2: If they are only connected to their own capitol, ground forces will show up, but do nothing.

 

3. Each node should not be connected to too many other nodes. I usually keep a rule of two friendly, two enemy to make the attack paths fluid.

If you want it to follow a historical or set attack path, simply point your strategick notes accordingly.

 

4: You can remove the base point values. They are no longer needed. To help you show where a point is on the map, a terrain viewer such as KMD is much recommended.

You can have a semi-functional campaign without listing any strategic nodes. That is, if you plan on making it purely air to air. However, creating a campaign in this method will leave you with no winner.

 

The strategic nodes are used for your ground forces. So in your campaign above, you will need to list some ground units for both sides. As JonathanRL stated, the campaign only ends in success or failure if one side captures the others HQ.

Remember you can also use the LocalObjective=TRUE command to make units move towards a non-capitol node,

 

for example: if you have an outlying island that you want to be in on the action.

Because this is an island campaign, will I have to have transports or other ships to move units around? If so, do I list them as seperate ground units also? Im also still not getting the campaign to show up ingame drop down menu. In the solomons.ini file I have this...

However, the "force" listing shows only united states and then the two japanese forces. Im confused there. Thank you for help with this barrage of questions, much appreciated.

Only if you want them to be flyable.

Force is the Alliance (ig. Allies, Nato, Warsaw Pact...). Service is the nation, that can be part of a Force.

It is correct.

 

Ground forces will transport themselves to other islands, no need to add ships.

PS. The nations.ini...are you talking about the one in the flight folder or the one I have in the terrain folder? I have IJN and Japanese Empire in the one in the flight folder. In the Solomons-V3 terrain folder I have Solomons-V3_nations.ini. It only has Japanese Empire listed, no IJN.

don't forget, "Japanese Empire" is just the IJAAF. You'll probably need to add "IJN" as well, as a lot of my recent mods for japaneas stuff has split the services as they shoudl be. AND has the 2ndy effect of allowing for IJ naval forces (as seen in the PTO ships mod)

 

which also means you're going to be doing data ini edits on the aircraft, to place them in the correct 'nation' (ie: service)

Ok, this just isnt working for me. I cant see what the problem is. Maybe one of you guys can take a look and see what it is I dont have right. This is the file Solomons_DATA.ini. I added a couple ground units, one for each side. I know they arent historical; just place holders for now.

I have both the solomons.ini and the solomons_DATA.ini in a folder called Solomons placed in the Campaign folder in my mod folder located at C:\Users\Jeff\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2 PAW . So, any thoughts, suggestions, guffaws? Im at a loss here.

You only need two [Force00x] listings. One for the good guys & on for the bad. Make [Force001] USN and [Force002] the IJN, or whatever your primary forces will be for each side. All other U.N. nations will be 'under the command' of [Force001] (i.e. Australia, RoyalNavy, USMC ..) or of [Force002] (Japanese Empire, etc..). These nations will then be listed in the CAMP_DATA.ini's Nation= section.

 

Next, make sure that [Force001] & [Force002] and all other Nation= belligerents are listed in your Nations.ini.

 

Having the Solomons folder with the Solomons.ini pointing to the Solomons_DATA.ini is all correct. The campaign folder must be named CAMPAIGNS, though.

 

The Solomons.ini should look something like this -

Maybe has nothing to do with it but some of the 'Nation=' call outs are out of sink for japan. In ground unit you listed it as "Empire of Japan" in air unit it is listed as "Japanese Empire"

Ok, finally got the campaign to showup! YAY! Another question, my sbd squadron doesnt show up. The Marines and VF-6 do. Any ideas? Ill take another look at the ini,s tommorrow. Also, How do I get the F4F's to upgrade later to say F4U's or for the Navy, F6Fs? Anyway to get that upgrade fairly quickly?

Hellcat's weren't used in that theatre ... USMC used Wildcats, some squadrons even AFTER Corsairs were deployed. The Navy was rather busy at the time with the Central Pacific drive, and left the Solomons theatre to the Marines, Army, RAAF and RNZAF (although there WERE a few Fast Carrier TF raids against Raubal .. but you rally don't want to open the "Naval Map=TRUE" can of worms on this map ... not really enough room for CV zones on the water bmp

 

I'd reccomend getting the Osprey Campaign book series; I know there's on for Guadalcanal, as I used it for some of the terrain buildings. Further research into the drive north up the islands chain, and the isolation of Rabual would definately be reccomened (2 main axis of attack -- up from the 'canal, and up from New Gueinea)

You will have to set the upgrade type to fixed with a specific date in the campaign_data.ini. Like in following example (using A-4 as xmpl):

ok now whit working keyboard the camaping in my last post his the old gen 1 solomons campaing maybe it can be used has a guide since its out off dated and not all aircraft are available any more hopes this helps.
