rjw Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I stumbled upon this article in Wiki which I found rather interesting so I thought I would post it here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Evans_Hartney Best Regards Quote
Hauksbee Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Great story! Loved the bit where he "smacks his gunner alert" because an E.III is boring in. And when he crashes in the hop field and ends up under the 775 lb. engine, and the Aussies come out, lift it off him, then drop it. Quote
Olham Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Geeze, they had a tough sortie that day. But seems they remained very cool. Yeah, I still have to explore about the Canadians. The Australians too. Robert, maybe you could list your top five books by Australian WW1 flyers? Quote
DonL Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Very good story, thanks for posting it! Looks like he has a book, it might be out of print. http://www.amazon.com/Up-em-Harold-Evans-Hartney/dp/B000KD7BBS Quote
Olham Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Thank you for the title - that way I could find several copies at ABEBOOKS. http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=Harold+Evans+Hartney&sts=t&tn=Up+and+at+%27em Quote
RAF_Louvert Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 . Hartney's book is an excellent read and one I have enjoyed several times over the years. I highly recommend it. On a related note, I've just acquired a beautiful original Great War US Army tunic sporting sergeant's stripes and the shoulder patch for the 185th Aero Squadron; the very first night intercept unit in the US Air Service and the one Hartney flew with when he brought down the Gotha mentioned in the article. . Olham Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Thx for the recom, Lou - and you know: we want to see PHOTOS of the tunic! Congrats on your find - I guess it's an original uniform? Quote
RAF_Louvert Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 . Olham, it would be my pleasure to share a few photos of my latest find. And yes, it is an original from all indications. I will start a new thread with the pics so as not to disrupt this one any further. . Quote
