Images of Sandy Hook from Mt. Mitchell

Recommended Posts

I delivered my buddy's boat from Manasquan NJ, to a marina in Sandy Hook bay early this afternoon, so he can use it in that area until the coastal waters warm up in June.  Anyway, took these from my cell phone from the scenic overlook at Mount Mitchell (elevation 266 feet)  This is the highest point on the coast between the Yucatan peninsula and Mount Desert Island, Maine: http://www.monmouthcountyparks.com/page.aspx?Id=2534

When you look at Sandy hook from this perspective, it's hard to believe that it housed a Nike Hercules launch facility, a battery of 8" naval artillery, and a battery of 16" guns! The marina in the third image is where my friend is slipping his boat for the next 6 weeks.

And yes, that is the Manhattan skyline in the background.  It is some 17 nautical miles away from where I'm standing, and the large building in the center of the second image is the freedom tower.

It was just a few degrees above freezing when I got up this morning. Winter never seemed to come to an end this year, and Spring so far  has been nothing to write home about, either.
