+Trotski 936 Posted February 4, 2016 Yeah I live in Derby, so very close to RR , they have a Merlin testbed engine which is on show an run at public displays a lot. And I saw that balbo at flying legends a couple of years back, the RR Spit flys over quite often too, which is nice.
Olham 164 Posted February 4, 2016 I've been up there in Derbyshire in the 80s, Trotski. I remember a place called Birchover, north of Derby. There were huge "thunder stones" which the ancient druids had used to impress the crowd. And somewhere in the area was a cliff; a line of rocks, which was also well known there - but I forgot the name. And on another visit to England, I was standing on a high chalk hill near London, when I heard that distinct sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin or Gryphon come closer. A Spitfire on it's way to or from an airshow came passing our cliff, quite close. We waved, and the pilot waved back! A great, totally unexpected sensation!
