F-4 Phantom II with modern Heads Up Display
Caesar replied to xclusiv8's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Oh...didn't know that. Sorry! Hopefully that'll be converted for SF2. Might give me something to do when I get back on my normal computer once I get to Greenland. -

The F-4EJ Kai on this site already has a HUD update and a brand new pit. Look for it in the d/l section. EDIT: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=2776 -
What's your fav method of air-to-air combat?
Caesar replied to jet_spud's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Favorite? GUNS, Baby! Typical? Long-range/BVR. I only get into gunfights usually in missions prior to 1985, simply because after that point the Flankers start showing up and shooting at me from BVR, so I have to shoot at them before they can shoot at me. Every once in a while it can turn into a gunfight, and I love it when it does, but that becomes more and more rare in missions following the mid 80's. -
The Modder Community
Caesar replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I will say "Thank You" again to the modding community, and I mean it with the utmost sincerity. For no charge, you have given me hundreds (or possibly thousands) of hours of entertainment. You guys and gals are the ones that keep this sim a world apart from others (and let's not forget TK's hard work, of course!), and you have done so with your own time and money, and asked for nothing back, but two words: "Thank You." It's because of you all that I can go zorching around in a Tomcat or Crusader, Eagle or Raptor, fight for either the Blue or Red side, load up thousands of different weapons, take on completely unpredictable enemies, mixes of aircraft, be as realistic or not as I please. The mods I get here are top-notch in quality, and if I were part of any other community, or trying to get mods to work with other sims, I'd be dropping a pretty penny for that same quality (I know, because I've tried MSFS and dear LORD, I'm dropping the same amount for a single plane as for the whole sim!) Even through the rivet counters, through real life issues (and sadly as we've seen recently, through the loss of life) you press on, still delivering enjoyment to tens of thousands of users. Do not take this response as flattery or anything of the like. I do mean it sincerely. I say Thank You Again! for all that you've done, and all that you will do, and never forget that the community most certainly appreciates your hard work and effort! If I'm lucky, I won't miss all of the next year of mods while I'm in Greenland (fingers crossed on community center connectivity!) Thank You Again! -

That looks gorgeous, Julhelm! Keep up the good work. -
Foxtrot this sierra. Guess I won't be buying this version of the game. Too bad, I was looking forward to it.

Good work, and thanks for posting the procedure! Got it up and running. Works great. Also, I've noticed that at 18000 cycles, the game runs pretty smooth at both menus and in-game. Fastest way to do it, outside of a specific profile using a frontend, is to hit Ctrl+F12 until the cycles read 18000.

Change or roll rate
Caesar replied to tiopilotos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Well, some modern aircraft actually DO have a slow roll rate, or can depending on the airspeed (more or less flow over a larger or smaller control surface will change how effective that surface is). I don't know the Mirage 2000's off the top of my head, but if you really want to modify it, I know that the RollDamper in the a/c data.ini has something to do with it, so check that line. -
I've also got an X52, but getting it up and running is a pain. The problem is that if you select a stick with a throttle in-game, the Joystick's Z-axis (rudder movement) becomes the throttle, and I haven't figured out how to get it to recognize otherwise. End result is that at the moment, I use the keyboard for throttle/rudders, stick for primary flight controls. There may be a way to get the stick to be recognized properly, but you'll have to go through DOSBox's documentation (included in the download, IIRC). I'll have to look into it more.
-
Let me see if I can't fool with it. I got it to install somehow. Will report back. EDIT1: It figures that I left my disc about 2800 miles to the East of here. IIRC, there is a setup file (not Install) - see if you can run the setup, rather than install. If that fails, try to run the install through WinXP (possibly running it in compatibility mode with WIN95 or 98), but run the actual game thru DOSBox. Will see what I can do if both of those fail. If it does set up, keep a copy of the installed game file, because there is no way in hell to get the set up to run in Vista (haven't tried it on Win7) and it will run if it is pre-installed.

Strike Fighters 2: Israel RELEASE
Caesar replied to Crusader's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Just bought SF2:I. So far, noticed better frame rates on mah' ATI card, which is nice. Germany works flawlessly for me, just did an F-14/A-4/F-4 recce mission that turned out well. Noticed HUD problems, but these were already noted, so I'll be going thru what's been written. Yet again, satasfied customer here. TK rocks. Edit: Yep, MigBuster's solution worked on the HUD! -

Lookin' hawt! -
I wrote one of those reviews, actually! I got it running (now on Vista) using DOSBox - an emulator that lets you play DOS games on PC. I think I had to set it up through DOSBox, but it's been a while. I know that's how I set up X-COM and MegaRace. Regardless, I don't think the Windows executable will run on Vista, but you can run the game install thru DOSBox, then the game itself. The problem I've run into is getting the right number of processor cycles to make the game run smooth; the menu's run better at one set, the game at another. Also, it will recognize a joystick, but not a throttle - maybe adjustments have to be made thru the DOSBox interface, I haven't screwed with it in a while. In essence, you need DOSBox or another DOS emulator, install it, then run Fleet Defender's install through your emulator (make sure you have a subdirectory to act as "C:" I use "C:\Dosgames" to mount as "C:") then play the game. EDIT: If you have the CD version, rather than the 3.5" version, you'll also have to mount the CD drive for the initial install (the game doesn't need the CD to run). So for the initial install, the verbiage would look something like: Z:\> mount C C:\Dosgames <enter> Z:\> mount D D:\ -t cdrom -ioctl -label FD <enter> - can be done without the -label FD part, that just gives the program the CD label Z:\> D: <enter> D:\> install <enter> run thru setup D:\> C: <enter> C:\> cd\mps\f14gold <enter> C:\MPS\F14GOLD\> f14 <enter>

Tactics for Reco mission
Caesar replied to Cliff7600's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I usually use the F-14 with TARPS when I do recce missions on the blue side. I'll either pack 2/2 (AIM-54/AIM-9 or AIM-7/AIM-9) or 1/1/2 (AIM-54/AIM-7/AIM-9) and full GUNS. Because the number of a/c on CAP usually outnumber the number of missiles I have, I try to prioritize which targets I want to smack in the teeth at range. In the event that I wind up with bandits closing for a dogfight, I've still got my heaters and vulcan cannon. Just last night, I ran into four Su-35 Super Flankers, had an F-15 on the wing, the escort were flying Mirage 2000's and I was flying low to avoid air radars. The Flankers fired at range, and I returned fire, poping up, then flying back down to make them waste their missiles. Bagged one with a Buffalo at around 40 miles, fired my Sparrow at around 20 but it missed. Fortunately the Mirages and my Eagle splashed two more. One remained and I was closing to dogfight range, and realized he still probably had at least 4 heaters. If I exhanged fire with him, I'd likely be killed and MIGHT hit him with one of my two AIM-9M's, so I began flying tangent in hopes of making a wide circle. Fortunately, the Flanker was flying at the speed of heat and my Mirage escort got closer, leaving the Flanker to expose his exhaust to me to deal with the Mirages. I turned into him, heard a few "FOX 2" calls on the radio, no hits. Continued to close in burner (still have his burner cans to my 12) got tone, fired the first heater and it went for his flares (at this point he seems to have noticed me), fired the second and wouldn't you know it, it went for the flares too! Select GUNS when over the radio "FOX 2" and BOOSH! Flanker goes down. Headed back towards the objective point, and thank God for the gun, we get in it with four Floggers (second CAP) I gunned two, wingy got one, the last killed by the Mirage escort. Head back towards the objective, speed of heat, TARPS on, One Pass and Haul Ass, Baby! Mission successful. A third CAP was flying around somewhere, but we never ran into it. I admit, its not as thrilling as flying in unarmed, but it does keep the kill ratio up! -
MiG-15, -17, and -19 Variants Flyable in WOE?
Caesar replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Look no further than the Downloads section, under Cold War aircraft. The MiG-17 and MiG-21 have their own section, the MiG-19 is in the Soviet Aircraft section (starting around pg. 2) and I know we have MiG-15's, either in Cold War or another section. You probably can't select these planes (the pre-installed ones that come with the game) to start with because they need a cockpit to become selectable (maybe a loadout screen too - though I think it just goes to default if one isn't there). They can appear as escorts because the AI uses them normally, so escorting your a/c is not a problem. -

aim54 unavailable
Caesar replied to C.Pascal's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm on a lunch break right now, so I can't get into too much detail, but I don't think you want the Sparrow stations reading SAHM,AHM, because that will put the Phoenix into the Sparrow station (and into the airplane) instead of on its rails. There should be a number of stations labeled SAHM, and a number labeled AHM, I think the SAHM ones are station(num) bis. If no one has a solid answer in a few hours, I'll expound on this. Meanwhile, check pistitom's link. -

download question
Caesar replied to kenhil2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
First, welcome to CA. To answer some of your questions: You keep running into a download limit because of your member status (New Member). This status increases with posts/participation with the community, or by purchasing a subscription. There is or was a sticky on maximum download rate by status, but I have no idea where to find it right now. .RAR files are compressed files designed to work with WinRAR, but can also be read and opened with 7-Zip, which is a free compression/decompression program. Everything you need to add to make the addon work is found int the .RAR or .7z file, unless specifically noted (like for some campaigns or missions). For information on adding planes and modding the sim, go to the Knowledge Base under the ThirdWire section, it's covered pretty in-depth.
