Su-27 experts, I need help
Caesar replied to 76.IAP-Blackbird's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Those look almost identical to the Tomcat's Ramps. I'm afraid I don't have the Su-27's numbers, maybe to help ball-park it for the F-14 they don't activate until .35M, and then don't normally move until .5M. Ramps 1 and 2 start at .5M and Ramp 3 at .9M. The aircraft is limited to below 1.2M in the event of Ramps failure. -

New Plane
Caesar replied to F22.pilot2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
Scroll down the Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum and you'll see the entry "UCAV EDI (Stealth)?" EDI was a work in progress nearly three years ago, but I don't know of any release for the ThirdWire series. I do know one was released for FS2004 as The Test Pilot said. -
Sorry to hear of your loss, Firehawk.

HDR 1.01 Open beta

In my opinion, I think you should go with 3, it looks splendid. -
HDR 1.01 Open beta
Caesar replied to FalconC45's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Falcon, From what I see, it's responding just about the same as 2.7 (good frames, good picture) and I feel as though the contrast ratio is spot-on. Effect is pretty darn good from my perspective. -
Searching a Eagle variant
Caesar replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
That's the Silent Eagle, it's a WIP based upon a plane that is at least in concept phase. There was a subject on it in the Military and General Aviation Forums that has some of the pics of the plane. EDIT: And I think the topic for the TW WIP is "Eagles gone Wild" -
HDR 1.01 Open beta

I cut together a little video showing gameplay with the HDR effect. Better viewed in High Quality, full-screen. -
HDR 1.01 Open beta
Caesar replied to FalconC45's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
These are some of the screens I've captured. The effect itself is pretty amazing, and with the contrast differential the camera actually brightens and darkens the plane with regard to its position with the sun. Into the sun Sun at back Sun reflecting off the Hi-gloss paint Sun perpendicular In the break Looking into the sun Of note is that the frame rate has been very good overall, even when it drops into the 30's area, it's consistent, making the game run smoothly. It will go as high as the 70's depending on the angle, which is better than I've seen before with an ATI-based card (I'm using a Sapphire 4850HD) -
Welcome back! Glad to hear of your recovery.

I wonder if they want the MiGs back just to HAVE something to put in the air before they get newer A/C. As it stands, the MiG-21 and -23 are older tech, though the -21 was and still is a fine plane (and is hard to see in a dogfight, if it gets that close), and the -23 is good for the strike role. I think there's a good deal of merit with the F-16: not super expensive, very maneuverable yet also a proven bomb truck, able to give larger aircraft a hard time with ease. Israel has proven them to work well in various engagements both in the air and against ground targets, and also proven them to work in a desert environment. Vanir, I have no idea where you get this stuff from. Iraq is not even considering buying a low-RCS platform, so why you'd bring it up is beyond me. Though the F-16 will show up pretty tiny on a radar without any RAM or inlet change. If they had the option, I'd think they'd certainly want to go with the low-RCS because it'll blast your Fulcrum, Flanker, or whatever out of the sky before it ever has the chance to employ an Archer. And have you taken a class on radar theory? I doubt it from how you're describing reflections or the use of phased-arrays. Not that it's for discussion anyhow, being that a lot of that is classified Secret/NOFORN or above. Historically, in Desert Storm we saw what the Teen-Series did to the Fulcrum, and more recently, we also saw how the F-15 and F-16 aggressors could get the better of the Su-30MKI thanks to that controversial debriefing you can still find on YouTube following Red Flag in 2008. Draw what you will, but the Eagle and Viper still were able to achieve dogfight kills against "more advanced" Flankers. I think that Iraq would be very well to select the F-16. Seems to me that those "revamped 70's US update recovery projects" did, and continue to do damn fine.

This was posted over at the Tomcat Sunset site. It is an amazing part of the 1996 "Wings of Eagles" airshow with CAPT Dale "Snort" Snodgrass at the controls of an F-14B Tomcat, preforming aerobatics with an F7F Tigercat. "Snort" was one of NAVAIR's most skilled sticks, and nearly every account I have heard or read of fights against him ended up in one of two ways: the recounter having been gunned, or having fought hard to a stalemate, regardless of the aircraft His Snortlieness was flying (F-14A, F-14B, A-4, F-5, T-38, etc.) or the plane he was flying against (F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, A-4, MiG-21 over Groom Lake, etc.) To this day, "Snort" is still flying in at least the F-86 and P-51 for airshow audiences, and has always been described as an amazing person, officer and pilot. Check it out.

Wasn't that (MCO/Pilot position) one of the contest questions, DWC? Will have to wait for that verification, but from what I remember, the pilot indicated that he didn't know that the canopy and his RIO were gone initially, but rather thought the cockpit depressurized. He also wasn't going extremely fast, and you can see he's not haunched behind the windscreen, so it's providing some level of wind deflection. Still, I sure as hell wouldn't want to be flying that thing without the canopy on if I could avoid it!

Ref. NAVAIR NATOPS 01-F14AAD-1 There are two positions that Command Ejection can be set for: Pilot or MCO That switch dictates if the pilot initiates command ejection or if the RIO initiates command ejection. For this to work, the command ejection selector had to have been in the Pilot position. I.e. if the pilot pulled the ejection handle, both would punch out. If it were in the MCO position, the guy in the back would have punched out both, but in this case, he only ejected himself. IIRC there's some extra amplification in "Bye Bye, Baby" on this particular incident, but it's about 2870miles to the east of me right now. Anyone else have the reference?

Low RCS versus airframe performance
Caesar replied to vanir's topic in Military and General Aviation
Meeh...another this vs that thread. Hope this one remains civil too. Going to go with FC on this one. Most of the Raptor's capabilities are classified, and unless you fly the plane, you're probably not going to know very much about its true potential or performance. Though as some foreshadowing, it achieved a 244 to 2 kill to loss ratio against F-15's, F-16's and F/A-18's in a recent Red Flag event, and 144 to 0 at Northern Edge in '07. Considering those aircraft are comparable to the Flanker, I have an idea of how the Raptor would do. -

"Padlocked"
Caesar replied to fougamagister's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I usually hear it under 2 occasions: 1. My wingman is "Winchester" and going for a gun kill 2. (More common) My wingman has become defensive and I'm down to guns, trying to call him back to my wing to help me engage by closing distance. What usually works here is calling on him to break (Tab-1-3), then calling him back to my wing.
