Wings Over Israel [Official Thread]
Caesar replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I was quite stoked today when I recovered from a flat spin using anti-spin inputs. Hands off didn't work this time, so it was a matter of opposite rudder and full pull on the stick. This game keeps gettin' better. -
MF F-14 cockpit repaint
Caesar replied to The Trooper's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
IDK if the SF engine would even allow for that functionality. The TCS has been modded into the bottom display (initially a function of the top display) under the Tomcat downloads section, so it works, just on the lower display instead of the upper. As to targeting data, that's already on the bottom display as the secondary radar image (as it should be), but the nav/speed/etc. is already covered by the cockpit analog instruments. Trying to d*ck around with the bottom display for that is redundant. Personally I think The Trooper has done an excellent job repainting the pit and I also believe the functionality is highly accurate. -
MF F-14 cockpit repaint
Caesar replied to The Trooper's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Well...kind of. I use the NATOPS as my reference. The A and B's top display showed was called the VDI (Vertical Display Indicator) which showed the vertical bars shown on the HUD, and if a target was locked on, it would show the firing circle, the target's position and some extra data atop the vertical bars. Its second function was the TCS image up to 10x mag. The bottom display was the Horizontal Situation Display Indicator (HSI) which showed a heading circle, KIAS, TAS and the heading again as a neumeric value. Its second fucntion was radar display as seen on the RIO's TID. It didn't have a tactical map, and outside those functions didn't really offer what a true Multi Function Display offers in terms of other data of the a/c. -
MF F-14 cockpit repaint
Caesar replied to The Trooper's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Well, the A and B didn't really have a tac-map or MFD's...technically the bottom display was an "MFD" in that it could display heading/TAS/KIAS or an image of the radar. -

It's the second sentance in the final line, The Trooper made it, he sent it to me when I was trying to fix my stock cockpit. He hasn't finished it yet tho, but it does indeed kick ass. -

How to defeat PD-beaming: At over 100 miles with an active homing missile. (Range at hit was 84NM, launch distance 107NM) They beamed my radar after I launched, sure, but that wasn't enough against the Buffalo. The pit is by The Trooper, not yet finalized at time of post. -
Gripen - Me Likes the Gripen
Caesar replied to GASCAN39's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It loaded 17.2G for me at high speed. Unfortunately it also departed when I tried to hit 5 at closer to 300KIAS. Note 1: I did read about the FM so please don't take that as an attack on the FM; see Note 2. Note 2: Still getting used to her and now know not to try to load high G at low speed. Note 3: This was in WoI, not WoE. Really been enjoying her, good work, gents! -

I also noticed that the wingmen call Bingo Fuel and Spike. Also at BVR they don't generally confirm kills, though it does happen every once in a while (that's not a complaint). Now, I've tested the Gripen in WoI but I fear if I add the gun with the current gun editor all of my guns will disappear, has anyone tested out the current gun editor? -
Not gonna buy that. A midair is not a reason to replace a plane. The plane's stick actuator causes a midair, and the stick actuator is made of flesh and bone.

Put the Tomcat into a flat spin, only it was after my wingman crashed into me and I lost a wing...by going hands off, the plane did nose-down and got out of the spin, but without that wing the a/c was irrecoverable. I love these features. -
Soviet A2A Missile Weapons Pack Project
Caesar replied to kukulino's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
The AI evades them...and then laughs at you... well, not really the second part, but yeah, they got evasion down better. Even the AIM-9L which worked damn well in WoE/V has either a far more limited envelope or is fooled real easily. I have yet to hit a target with the "mighty Lima" as it was called in the 1970's. Sure, it'll get tone head on, but good luck actually hitting anything with it. -

Well, install 'em and see. As FastCargo has already said the Weapons Packs don't work; in my own experiments I figured out that the game doesn't like it when you change the WEAPONDATA.DAT file (though it doesn't care about the .ini) and if it is changed, all the weapons disappear. Most of the add-on planes should work; I haven't gotten a broken plane yet, though as C5 pointed out some gauges might be missing and need to be imported. From prior posts it looks as though some of the terrain is working and some isn't, but I can't comment there. -

The AI got a lot smarter on both sides IMO. On hard mode the enemy beams you to take away your PD track every time you fire. I watch the enemy's direction on radar as the missile travels towards them, and nearly every time they turn abeam, break the lock, then turn back into you. Against heaters (at least up to the H) they got evasion down damn well too, wait for it and pull HARD as that missile closes. I also noticed my teammates aren't getting shot down much at all. Last flight I got into a no-sh*t 8 minute stalemate between myself and wingman vs 2 Fishbeds, half the remnants of a 4-man flight. One of the Sparrows hit its mark, and so did one of my wingman's, none of our heaters hit and every other sparrow either missed or went stupid. Then it was just guns, trying to deny angles and cover the other wing. Finally won, but it was a lot harder than I recall WoE/V/SF to be. -

I gotta say the fact that TK modeled in the limitations of doppler radar astounds me. I was flying a four-ship against six or eight (I don't remember) MiG-17's. They beamed my AWG-9 on more than one occasion, making my sparrows go stupid on more than one occasion. That got frustrating, but added another hint of realism and another challange and I really enjoy it. Aside from some new radio comms I noticed, I'm really looking forward to further flights to see what else is in store for us with this latest addition to the TW series. -

Well, thus far I've flown two missions, one with the stock F-16, the next with my beloved F-14A. Gotta say I love some of the new effects and features. Only one problem I noticed with the Tomcat's pit: missing instruments, namely the G meter, clock, some engine dials and yaw-rate thingy that I don't know the name of...none of which I actually ever look at in combat. I'll have to figure that one out, but otherwise everything's running smooth...now, back to flying! -

I tried doing another intro using "Dogfight" but I tried to keep it to ~1 minute...the result was kind of a failure and I didn't think I could do a 4+minute video. I think Kei could pull it off though. Keep up the good work, the Raptor looks nice!
