I'd hazard a guess that it was stress induced fixation. He was set on Miramar and just couldn't see any other alternative properly. Interesting series of events, you can see the typical chain of mistakes that lead to just about any aviation accident. Really surprised to see a professional pilot disregard his checklist, but he isn't the first and won't be the last. I wonder though if the way the military punishes their officers and enlisted men whether that leads to covering up of possible problems. I know this is why you cannot be charged criminally for an accident, to keep people open and willing to cooperate. Granted, even in the civilian field you'd be fired for having the responsibility that lead to the accident, but it seems losing a military career would affect a person a bit more.

Anyone want to start a complete Area 88 mod again?
GrinchWSLG replied to subarug's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
Well I never really agreed to that...just said I'd get that old skin I made out... To be honest I have my own SF projects, 3 of them actually. However, if you can provide good references I can do some repaints of existing aircraft. Which brings me to another point. I suggest you stick with whatever is pre-existing in terms of aircraft, ground objects, terrains, etc. Just one aircraft or tank or terrain or whatever is a whole project in itself. If you ever want this to see the light of day I think you should approach it that way. -
First Attempt at decaling
GrinchWSLG replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
What you need to do is select the outline of your decal, so that dragony triangle shape. In photoshop you'd use the magic wand and click outside the symbol in the empty area, and then find the menu option "select inverse", dunno what GIMP calls all that. Then with that shape of the decal still selected you go to your alpha channel and make wherever the decal is white, and wherever the decal isn't black. So it'll look like a pure white decal in the middle of a black area. Also on the layer on which the decal actually sits, make sure apart from the decal its transparent, nothing else there. -

Um...I'll try to remember to pack up and release that F-5E skin I did forever ago. Luckily I still have the PSD, but I'll have to sort out who's model that went with. -
Strike Fighters 2 patch is out
GrinchWSLG replied to DanW's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
If you have Windows XP or Vista you don't need a 3rd party program for converting files. Open it in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (opens here by default) and click save, change file type to JPEG, you may need to rename it I don't recall exactly, and hit Save . Its really simple. -
Strike Fighters 2 patch is out
GrinchWSLG replied to DanW's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
While its a good idea for most people, it kind of irks me. I like to use png when I want to show a lot of detail and going straight to jpeg means losing a lot of that. BMP was better in that it gave us a choice, and I don't see what was so hard about converting to jpeg. -
The Works In Progress Thread
GrinchWSLG replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I'm calling it the F-112 for now, that could change of course. Its supposed to be an early 60's cheap export multirole fighter. Think of it as an American version of the Mirage F-1. Goal was to make a quick and easy model that I could drop a prebuilt cockpit into. Haven't decided which cockpit yet, was thinking F-104 or F-8, but those are both rather fighter centric and don't lend much to the bombing role. As for the quick, well I modelled this much in a single night so not bad I think. -

F-108!
GrinchWSLG replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
Right Click - Save Hey, I like the Mirage F1, so maybe someday I'll play with this, heeding Gunrunner's advice of course. Plus you could probably just throw an F-104 pit in it. -
File Name: Fletcher File Submitter: GrinchWSLG File Submitted: 19 Feb 2009 File Category: Destroyers Fletcher Class Destroyer (1941-46) by GrinchWSLG This is representative of a war era Fletcher. To be exact its a late war version. The model is a mix of different ships, specifically the Kidd and the Sullivans. Its finished in Measure 22. A paintkit is included for those who want to finish it in the various other Measures used during the war. Intallation: 1. For SF, WOV, WOE, WOI: Put the "Fletcher" folder into your "GroundObject" folder For SF2: ...do whatever you do to install ground objects. 2. That's it. List seemed kind of dumb with just one item. The default texture is 2048 as its a big object. If this is too large for you or you plan on having many Fletchers on screen, I've included a 1024x1024 texture as well. Its located in the 1024Texture folder. Credits Wrench- Wouldn't have made it if he hadn't asked. Hinchinbrooke- I used your Daring as the base for the .ini Typhoid- Weapons advice Ghost029- More weapons info This mod is released under the CombatAce Thirdwire Community Freeware Licensing Agreement (or whatever its called). As such it may not be used in payware, proper credit should be given in the readme file of any freeware it is released in, and if feasible include the original readme. (Okay, you don't really have to include this little readme.) Not my fault if it somehow destroys your computer. Fletcher
GrinchWSLG replied to GrinchWSLG's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
Eventually yes. I haven't exactly decided how I'll do it though, as most of the upgrades the Fletchers received were ASW specific, which is a tad pointless in SF IMO. I may model the structure of the modernized Fletchers and then fit it with primarily surface and air weapons. Maybe call it the Dhimari Special. -
Can't say I've found a coaster that could make me gray out like an L-39 could.

Ship questions...
GrinchWSLG replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Few final questions if anybody feels like answering before I upload this. How to make two guns alternate fire? I'm clueless, I want the 40mm's to do it but I don't know how. How to make the guns elevate to compensate for range against ground targets? My guess is its impossible, but I would think the same sort of ballistic computations to hit aircraft could work here. EDIT: Submitted. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=8283 -
Are flight sims going out of style?
GrinchWSLG replied to Emp_Palpatine's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
Its a valid point, however, I think its a case of "a needle in the haystack". Certainly by and large console players are immature and not of the proper mindset for simulation gaming, but I think there are more than a few among the legions who have the potential to become simulation gamers. Had I been born 10 years later I might be among them. So I think its better to not simply clump all Ace Combat players in the same category and consider them useless. There's many future pilots among them who may simply not know about these games. I had flown MSFS, and CFS for years before I found Strike Fighters. I only found it because I'd had an urge to play a moddable jet combat sim after playing a loaned copy of Jane's USAF. A Google search led me to the SimHQ article on Strike Fighters. It may be trying, but I think having a little patience with the younger gamers and giving them a chance (just one is enough) will yield results. I think the Thirdwire Sims Knowledge Base here is a great example of what forums can do to get new people into the game (although it could use some expansion, especially in the modding catagories). Perhaps even an open forum dedicated to answering questions about the sim so that those topics don't clog up the General Topics. Mind you, these are just lighthearted suggestions, I think this forum does an above average job when it comes to newbies. Bringing back the Golden Age of flightsiming will require some sort of revolution, either producer or player side. I think it may be a case of both, where suddenly there is a large amount of players wanting a somewhat in-depth simulation and a producer willing to answer their calls. Unfortunately as things stand now there is only a smaller number of players wanting something more than arcadey, and very few producers willing to chance profit for gameplay. -
That's neat, but I think with Windows 7 bringing touch screen support we'll see a slew of new touch screen monitors once its released. Although a good solution for the here and now. This has actually shown me a use for touch screen monitors I hadn't thought of before.

Are flight sims going out of style?
GrinchWSLG replied to Emp_Palpatine's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
You guys realize Ace Combat and arcade-ish flight combat games have been around for a long time right? Even before Jane's USAF and the other great combat sims. I think the major downturn for combat flightsims and military simulators in general was the loss of the Jane's franchise. Lack of audience and buggy products can be blamed quite easily for that. Its not like getting rid of the simpler games will magically bring the market back, face it, a very small percent of the population have a moderate to serious interest in flying. What you have to remember is these products are made by companies and companies exist to make profit. That's nothing evil, its the way it is. So how to get more sims? Support the companies that do still produce them. Get players from the simpler games to move into the more serious sims. I think Ace Combat and the like are great gateway products for younger players and don't deserve nearly the amount of rivet counter bashing they receive. Finally, and most importantly, in the online communities, be open and accepting to new and inexperienced members. I've seen so many forums where inexperience is not tolerated and it does nothing but drive new people away. Thankfully that's absolutely not found here. -
Played both, loved both, but lord I wish someone would do a Destroyer Command II mod for one of them.

GrinchWSLG replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Thanks for the info. I think I've got good arcs set up now. I'll have to fudge the rear 40mm to not be yaw limited so it actually does something. Got Max to work well enough to set up the UVW's so I'm slowly texturing my way through. Will probably include a simple paintkit for those who don't want their Fletcher's in Measure 22. -
Wow, I hope that this engine gets used for more than just the WWI era, that looks incredible.
