GrinchWSLG replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Bloody hell. The model is done, the .ini is done, all I need to do is UVW Unwrap and texture it. I'd have been completely done by now but Max keeps crashing whenever I try to do the UVW Unwrapping. Not sure if I'm running out of memory or what but I may have to find some way to break down the mapping. I'd really like to have it all on one bitmap but I'm not sure of how to do that other than select everything at once and UVW Unwrap everything at the same time. -
Far East - Vladivostok
GrinchWSLG replied to Slartibartfast's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Sounds cool, I've been waiting for someone to make a campaign using the JASDF units. Kind of amazed no one's made a Hokkaido map, thought a Soviet invasion there would be fun. -

GrinchWSLG replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Okay, I've got most of the problems worked out. Figured out I had to leave the forward turrets all facing 0 degrees in Max and set the default angle and firing arcs in the .ini file. Now they track and fire and the firing effects work for the most part. Occasionally an effect goes out of whack on one of the quads but its okay. Still can't get the rear turrets to work although I believe that's a known problem. Seems you can't have them face 0 degrees in Max and set them to default 180 degrees in the .ini, they just end up backwards. And setting them to 180 degrees in Max results in them not engaging anything from what I see. Since the 5" guns don't seem to use AA artillery (they did in reality correct?) I set them to AIR_AND_GROUND so they can be of some use. But when I put another DD classified as friendly not too far away I ended up with this... Seems to me that's pretty far short of the intended range. Is there a reason the guns don't elevate to compensate for range? Finally, I'm wondering just how high to set the RangeFinder and BallisticComputer values. They're at 8 and 6 at the moment. The 40mm take down an F-100D once in a while but only when its in close, although I'm sure taking down a jet fighter should be a bit of a strain for a WWII AA defense. Oh, and what does IndependentSearchChance do? -

GrinchWSLG replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hey Wrench, 2 weeks. Yeah I lied about the "low poly". I seriously had way too much fun modeling this. Still debating putting the Oerlikons on, she's already spewing a lot of AA. I've got 19 guns on her now. Anyone know any sources on the official firing arcs for the Fletchers? I've just made them up for now. Spent all day playing with the .ini and I still am having trouble getting the muzzle flashes to show up at the right spot. They were working fine till I played with the firing arcs, now most of them are underwater. Figure its something I missed. Oh, and does anyone know the realistic engagement altitude for 5" guns and 40mm Bofors? They're set at 8000' right now. -

The day the Air Force gets OV-10s again, is the day I join the Air Force. (nobody actually hold me to that...) -
YF-19 Excalibur
GrinchWSLG replied to GrinchWSLG's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
Hmm, I'll look into that then, cuz it was giving me troubles before but I hadn't seen the cruise, etc points. Your english is great BTW. Working on a Fletcher class destroyer for Wrench at the moment. Well, not doing anything today, drove 7 hours total today down to Indy Center and back for a psych test. -

Quick question. Does anyone know the proper order for the nozzle animation? Should it start in the "closed" position or the full burner position? Or does it start normal and then go through the motions to full burner? -
Definitely Zero. Best final boss of any of the games, because it was a final boss that you had a lot of attachment to, not just some generic super weapon thrown in. Plus the whole knights jousting sort of battle to finish off an already knight based game was awesome. Also, beginning and ending with "Here comes the snow", so cool.

Thanks for that EricJ, guess I coulda found that out if I looked a bit, but it just occurred to me while typing up the post. Fast Cargo, yeah, that was a limitation I saw while I was first implementing it. I figure though, we've got lots of aircraft with afterburners that work just fine, but how many aircraft do we have with this awesome effect? Plus its featured in the movie so I wanted to carry that over. Thanks for the comments guys. -

Well you guys should go thank the Desert Storm Mod team for getting me back into Strike Fighters if only for a bit. That and I'm feeling a little better today since the FAA finally got my psych test scheduled (the right test too, unlike the last two times). I downloaded the F-29 Polecat and gave her a go. Interesting flight characteristics, wasn't impressed with the slow speed maneuvering. I plugged in some of the main wing data into the YF-19 and gave her a go. Pretty impressive, the positive G maneuvering was very nice. Some problems with rudder control while maneuvering, and spins in the negative G though. I wish the Su-47 team would release a beta so I could gank their values. I'll have a chat tonight with my good friend who's an aeronautical engineer with Cessna, see if he can help me sort out some of this aerodynamics mess. It still escapes me how and where these Sunday modders get their aerodynamic data from. I also went to work cleaning up the .ini file. Removed most of the troublesome stuff and found items I had missed. Lots of stuff still there that needs to be reworked or removed but I think I eliminated the stuff that was making the game crash. At least I was able to exit a mission without it crashing. Does anyone know how to make the aircraft accept generic fuel tanks? I think the YF-19 will carry enough fuel internally ala F-35, but I'd like the option to be there. I thought setting FT on a hardpoint would do the trick but no tanks show up in the list. Finally, this is by no means a new feature, its been there since before texturing, but I love seeing it work in game. Its probably because I figured out how to do it on my own that I'm so proud of it. Anyway, I thought I'd show off some of the vectoring effects, you can also see the canard movement as well. -
Tenjin Hidetaka I own it, great book. Spent a great deal of time staring at the shot of the YF-19's cockpit.

I'll try a Fletcher, maybe even make the model modular enough I can do variants for different eras. -

Which ships in particular are you looking for? I'm not busy ATM (cuz I'm not working on my YF-19 still ) and I've got a thing for Navy ships anyway. I'm sure they wouldn't have to be very high poly and source material is pretty plentiful. I'm just not sure on the coding, never really looked into ships. -

Well, this was a comms facility. What it was definitely not was an Iranian comms facility. No sir, we did not hit a comms facility on the wrong side of the border. There was no CIA officer at the briefing telling us one pass and then scoot. Nope. -

Reminds me of those recon missions in Aero Elite. Nice old looking radar set too. -
How About This For Nose Art?
GrinchWSLG replied to firehawkordy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
Kyon here. For making custom textures I generally avoid the decal route since its not very detailed. Its great for numbering and putting roundels on lots of aircraft, but for stuff like noseart it just doesn't stand up to par. My suggestion is find the texture folder of the aircraft you want to use, copy and rename it, and modify that texture. Best to use an aircraft with a texture kit although its not impossible on aircraft without. My personal F-14 didn't have a kit, or I wasn't happy with the one supplied. Fortunatley it was mostly white and light gray anyway. Maybe I should make a new personal aircraft with some anime noseart. I've been liking Feldt Grace a lot lately, wish she got more screen time in 00 S2. -

DS Mod Goodies
GrinchWSLG replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Here's a question I guess I never thought to ask, but playing this campaign has made me wonder. Does the campaign track ground object kills? For example, if I can a Firecan (haw haw) is that Firecan gone now in the following missions? Reason I wonder is if this is true is because I'm wondering if we could see the enemy's ability to detect and engage decrease over the course of the campaign, much like their fighter and ground units will lose strength. That and I'd hate to hit an airfields defenses and then return on the next sortie and see them magically replaced. -

I've been saying that a lot in the DS mod. Its either amazing escort or none at all. Course some Weasels would be nice too but they're always behind my flight it seems.
