Working overtime. But I'll have the night off so maybe I'll go to Coeur d'Alene and watch the fireworks.

Worked the 747-8F again a few days ago. They're still checking out that windshield. She made a few touch and goes in the sunset to we got a good look at the white whale. Magnificent bird.

Dunno which episode you watched. There were two seasons. Season one was generally considered very good, followed the original story pretty well and was animated well. Season two completely deserted the original art style and is considered a mockery of the original story. I read the manga as it continues the story far past what either season covered.

iPad gets approval from FAA to replace paper flight charts and maps
GrinchWSLG replied to FastCargo's topic in CombatACE News
We were just talking about this at work. Awesome that pilots will be able to use portable tech like this soon, hopefully other tablets will be authorized soon as well. Now if only we could get some new toys... -
Boeing gets $35 billion Air Force tanker contract
GrinchWSLG replied to DWCAce's topic in CombatACE News
All right! As a resident of Washington state, and someone who works with KC-135s on a daily basis, I'm very happy to see this. 2017 is a bit far off but I can't wait to see them. -
Worked this bird a few nights ago. They brought her over in the evening for some approach lighting tests with a new windshield or something. Unfortunately it was in the middle of our evening rush. Gave me a real headache trying to get my departures out with the 3 minute wake turbulence hold. And the 10 mile in trail seperation meant as soon as my 3 minutes were up, here came the stream of arrivals! Yeah, long night, but she's a beautiful bird, that's for sure.

I may get one. The idea of playing PS2 games on the go is very appealing since that platform is one of my favorites. I'm sure though Sony is going to make it difficult as hell to crack the firmware so I can just copy my own PS2 images onto it.

^ What he said. Seriousness aside, I'll be the 737 was a Southwest. I've had them take an intersection departure a couple times just to cut the line, usually it ends up being more efficient anyway.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. And a special thanksgiving wish to all those controllers, pilots, truckers, rail conductors and engineers who won't be joining their families around the table today so our world can keep running without a hitch in the background. And and a very special thanksgiving wish to all our service men and women, here or abroad, who stand on the line to protect our freedom.

WSJ: FAA Modifies Airspace Restrictions for New Boeing Jets
GrinchWSLG replied to FastCargo's topic in CombatACE News
Those dash 8's are crazy big. We can see them doing their test flights above our airspace and 25 mile away clear as day. Wish they'd come by and play on our new runway... -
Ahh, little far south of "home" but still close enough.
-
By the way, whereabouts did you take the pics?
-
I'm sure they have phasing in and out periods. I swear I saw one doing the roundy rounds at Fairchild a few weeks ago.
-
Haha, those shots really remind me of home.

Doh, forgot one of my latest... Herculean by grinchwslg, on Flickr Really have to check out the full view on that one, I'll just give you a direct link to that... Here you go

Line up and wait went into effect today. So remember, when I'm sounding like a complete idiot while saying this, please just humor me and position and hold.
-
Haha. At least the Canucks won't come back and ask me, "Does that mean line up and wait?" anymore...

They show up as primary targets only, but a primary target can be any moving object at any altitude, so it can be a bit disconcerting to a controller. As a rule, the MTI Gate (moving target indicator) cancels out most non airplane objects simply based on the fact they don't move fast enough. Then the angle of the antenna itself accounts for things like cars on the freeway. I imagine a wind farm would show up on my scope like a whole block of diamond shaped primary targets. I've never seen a primary only that was an aircraft, aside from a few that just departed and forgot to turn their squawk on, but I have seen formations of birds show up. In a radar only environment, where you can't look out the window and use your Mk 1's to account for the target, you should always call traffic on any primary that sticks around for more than a few sweeps. After my basic radar training course sim checkride, in which I called traffic on a primary only target, my evaluator told me of two instances where controllers had called traffic on primaries, and they turned out to be actual aircraft that were narrowly avoided. Apparently I was the first student he'd ever watched that called traffic on them, as it wasn't something that was taught in that course.

Janes Advanced Strike Fighters
GrinchWSLG replied to Slartibartfast's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
New Ace Combat in the works, HAWX 2, this game, DCS A-10 in the pipeline, and MS Flight just announced. Game or sim or whatever, I'm happy to see a resurgence in the flight genre. I still say the arcade games are great gateways for kids to find an interest in aviation. I think my first aviation related game was probably Captain Skyhawk, and that certainly wasn't a sim. Plus I still enjoy an arcadey break from time to time, I'm a big fan of the Ace Combat series, although they seem to be taking a new direction with the story that I don't like by placing it in the real world. -
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Announced
GrinchWSLG replied to Silverbolt's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
Hmm. Looks fun. Dunno if I like the series recent switch to the real world though. I kinda liked the fictional world. -
Would love to go to SeaFair. Unfortunately I'm stuck at work having to deal with the delays it's causing. Already two days of practice, combined with bad weather in PDX is making me miserable.

My second and last airshow this year. Took a day off work to go next door and see it up close (and to avoid having to work the hectic air show traffic). Had fun with my new camera and a new lens, met some interesting folks in the crowd, got sunburned. Looks like this year's air show gallery is a lot leaner than previous years due to some pretty bad backlighting during the show and my own increased standards. Here's a few of my favorite shots and a link to the gallery. Edit: I have no idea why the URL code is broken but you can click on any of the pics to go to my Flickr page.

To the dumbass with the green laser...
GrinchWSLG replied to FastCargo's topic in Military and General Aviation
Pretty much. We try to get as much info as we can from the pilot, broadcast a warning every five minutes for about 30 minutes and put it on the ATIS. We contact the police and they go out and try to search the little bastard down. I've had to deal with it twice in about the past year. -
I happen to think pure firepower is very sexy.
