  2. In Memory of LCDR Dennis Pike - MIA March 23, 1972 (WOV)

    Welcome
This mission pack replicates the final mission of Lt. Cmdr. Dennis Stanley Pike (USN), that took place over the Vietnam/Laos border on March 23, 1972. In that mission Lt. Cmdr. Pike and his wingman, Cmdr. Robert Taylor (USN) – commanding officer of Attack Squadron 192 – were flying A-7E aircraft assisting ground-based government forces being overrun by Viet Cong guerrillas, and also a downed T-28 with American pilot and Vietnamese observer in the same area. After forty minutes over the target area both aircraft were heading homeward, when Cmdr. Taylor received a call from Lt. Cmdr. Pike related to “oil pressure problems”. Moments later – and still 20 miles inside the Laotian border - Pike’s A-7E engine failed. Cmdr Taylor saw Lt. Cmdr. Pike eject from the aircraft. No trace of Lt. Cmdr. Dennis Pike has ever been found since. Loss coordinates were 152200N 1073400E (YC755030), and in 1973 his status was recorded as Missing In Action.

    IMPORTANT
This mission pack has been tested with the October 2008 patch for Wings Over Vietnam (WOV).

  4. Complex Static/Parked Aircraft. Phase I (F4-J, Fmk6, C-130J)

    Update v1.10
The SH-3 has been removed from this pack on request. To acquire the original model please contact Capun at capun1950@yahoo.com to request access to the model.

This pack provides a way to add more life into the otherwise sparsely populated airfields in SFP1 and WOV. I thought that I'd have a go at trying to use existing aircraft as the basis of complex static/parked aircraft. Here is the result. I hope you enjoy using them.

    [Thanks]
Many thanks to all those folks who created the original aircraft I've used as the basis for my own editing. And also many thanks for the hints, tips and support over the past few weeks on the forums. Without you this work would not have been possible.

This posting consists of a set of complex static/parked aircraft, a mission (.msn) file that makes use of them, and an extract of the optional changes to the VIETNAMSEA_TARGETS.INI (or equivalent) file that you may want to apply to populate Airfield 1 further with support equipment. Installation instructions are provided in the enclosed README.TXT.

The mission is based at Da Nang, South Vietnam and consists of two squadrons of RAF complex static/parked aircraft and some AI aircraft on final approach.

On the ramp you'll find RAF 74 Sqn and RAF 56 Sqn.

At the North end of the runway are two QRA shelters containing two armed F4-Js and support equipment. All ready to go.

On final approach are a pair of Mk6 Lightnings from RAF 5 Sqn. Lined up behind the Lightnings is a RAAF C-130J transport aircraft on final approach. Behind the C-130J is a RAAF A310 MRTT on final approach.

Two jeeps are also driving around the airfield. The first one circuits the aircraft on the ramp. The second drives to and parks up at the North QRA complex.

More to follow in subsequent phases.

    Regards, P.T.

  5. Complex static/parked F-4J with canopy down (complete)

I've decided to post each static aircraft as a complete folder so that the installation process is as simple as possible. I felt that the manual installation in my earlier post was too much work for a lot of people. This way you can pick and choose the statics you want to include in your own missions.

"If you build it, they will come". Well, if you make it easy for people, they will use it.

This posting consists of a F-4J complex static/parked aircraft with its canopy down, a sample mission (.msn) file that shows you how to reference static aircraft, and an extract of the optional changes to the VIETNAMSEA_TARGETS.INI (or equivalent) file that you may want to apply.

    Thanks, regards, PNT/comrpnt :-)

  7. Lightning Mk6 Landing Lights etc.

I'm not sure if this has been done before but I've tweaked the location and colour of some of the lights on Russouk's Lightning Mk6 (hope you don't mind Russ).

    [Thanks]
Many thanks to Russ who created the original aircraft I've used as the basis for my own editing.

    [What's included]
Bascially I've added landing lights to the left and right main gear, and added a bottom stobe -- changing the flash time to slow it down a bit in the process. For the top and bottom strobes I decided to change their colour to red, instead of white as in the original.

  8. Victor K2 RAF 57 Sqn Camo Skin

Hi folks, this mod adds a new RAF 57 Squadron Camo skin to the excellent Victor K2 tanker, produced by the A-team.

Many thanks and credit to the A-team for producing the K2 and also for granting me permission to post this mod. If there are any problems with this mod then please contact me directly, not the A-team. Thanks.

The 57 Sqn K2 camo skin is derived from the original Victor B2's camo skin, with additions to make it usable with the K2s HDU and refueling drogues. I've also included the 57 Sqn crest, and tail crest.

Installation instructions are included in the enclosed readme file.

Cheers, kind regards, P.T (comrpnt). :-)

  10. WOE Refuelling mission (as requested)

RAF F4 Tanker mission for WOE.

This mission involves you taking off as a pair of 19Sqn F-4s from RAF Wildenrath and heading North-West to the tanker practice zone.

The tanker takes off from nearby Laarbruch - North of Wildenrath.

Both you and the tanker have the same tanker-track waypoints programmed into your navigation system so finding the same piece of sky where the tanker is should not be too much of a problem.

As there's no radio contact (radio silence on this mission) for briefing purposes you need to know that the tanker is flying at 20,000 ft and a speed of 280kts. This information will prove useful when you line up and start closing on the drogue.

Both you and your wingman have the necessary waypoints programmed in to do the tanker track 3 times and then head back to Wildenrath for a touch down. You can fly the whole mission on autopilot if you like. Obviously you'll not rendevous with the tanker if you do it all on AP.

The MRTT will also return to Laarbruch after 3 circuits of the tanker track.

The overall mission time is about 45 minutes.

The weather is set to RANDOM and it's an afternoon sortie (16.00). For more of a challenge set the time to 01.30. The MRTT's lights should come on, including the drogue lights (if you'd included the mod I submitted a while back http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autom...;showfile=2992).

    [in case you missed it]
SFP1, WOV and WOE only simulate tanking - you will not take on any fuel during this mission - but it feels realistic enough when your about to hit the drogue!

Also, as you're flying as a pair, if you line up behind the starboard drogue (right side) then your wingman appears to line up on the port side. This looks quite realistic when viewed from outside. :-)

Hope you like it. Regards, Paul T. (comrpnt).

  11. Approach and airfield lights for ALL friendly WOE airfields

    [Note]
This mod replaces an earlier version by adding approach and airfield lights for the large two-runway airfield (Airfield3). This update can be used in place of that earlier one as it also incorporates the lights for Airfield's 1, 2 and 4 in WOE.

    [Acknowledgement]
The approach lights in this mod are the mostly the work of Sidewinder, Piett and Eightlein. With the exception of Airfield3 (see below), I simply ported them into WOE. I have also based my Heli-pad on the previous excellent work of Eightlein. My thanks to them for their previous hard work.

Credit where credit is due. :-)

This mod introduces approach lights and anti-collision lights to WOE's airfield 1, 2, 3 and 4 air bases. Basically, all of the friendly airbases in WOE. The anti-collision lights are defined for all the tall buildings and structures around the airfield.

There are two layouts for Airfield 1 (just to be awkward) so I've modified the GermanyCE_targets.ini file to point each Airfield1 reference at it's correct layout file containing the lighting information.

Airfields 2 and 4 use the same layout as Airfield 1 Layout 2, so it was simple to port across everything but the tower lights (see below) for their use.

Airfield 3 represents the most work I've put into this mod due to the sheer number of lights it contains and also that the version of the previous work I downloaded (done by Sidewinder and Piett) had some bugs I wanted to fix. Airfield 3 now has approach lights for all four runways. Also, I've cleaned up the taxiway lights, removed some spurious lights that were incorrectly placed on the centre of the main runway and completed the taxiway lights at the end of runway 06/24 which were partly missing in the version I downloaded.

Airfield 4 has two layouts, based on Layout 2 and a new one, Layout3. In Layout 3 the tower is a new structure and in a different location (i.e. next to the ramp). The Tower4 ground object is used on some bases instead of the normal stock Tower1 ground object. Again, for Airfield 4 I've modified the GermanyCE_targets.ini file to point each Airfield 4 reference at it's correct layout file containing the lighting information.

    [More Info]
Adding QRA sheds is simple and two examples are included for each type of Layout (For Airfield 1 Wildenrath for Layout 1 and Diepholz for Layout 2, and for Airfield 2 it's Freiburg. Airfield 4 uses Lahr for Layout 2 and Hahn for Layout 3). For QRA-enabled airbases simply point the air base's GermanyCE_targets.ini entry at the _QRA.ini version of the Layout ini file.

For Airfield 3 I've decided to add QRA sheds as standard to all Airfield 3 airbases. This is because I think that these bases warrant such facilities. QRA sheds are at the end of runways 36/18 and 06/24. Heli-pads are also included on the North and South ramps for Airfield 3.

    See here for screen shots:
    http://bbs.thirdwire.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=19180

and also here for additional screen shots of Airfield 3

    http://bbs.thirdwire.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3293

The list of additional lights for both types of layout is:

    Tower1, Tower2 and Tower 4
    Fueltank1 & Fueltank2
    Hangar1, Hangar2 & Hangar3
    Bunker1 & Bunker2
    Watertower
    ASR (radar)
ShelterA (used for ramp and QRA sites)
I've also include a Heli-pad for each layout.

Each building or structure contains at least 1 anti-collision red light (in some cases up to 4 lights) and hangars also contain flood lights facing the ramp area.

This mod certainly makes the home airfield's easy to spot from a distance. The red lights are on all of the time, with the other lamps and flood lights coming on at dusk and switching off after dawn. Approach lights are also set on all of the time. QRA lights are always on -- those guys don't ever sleep!

Hope you like these mods. Kind regards,

    Paul T (PNT/comrpnt/Nazgul) :-)

  13. The Last of the Lightnings

    Welcome.
This mission pack follows the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) training undertaken by Pilot Officer Ian Black during 1985/86, the last RAF pilot to qualify on the English Electric Lightning, as documented in his excellent book The Last of the Lightnings (ISBN-10: 075093073X; ISBN-13: 978-0750930734).

The missions in this pack are specifically designed to be used with Thirdwire’s Strike Fighters 2 Europe: Expansion Pack 2 (SF2E:Exp2), which introduced all Lightning types to the game. Where possible, stock objects and aircraft are used. Where necessary new aircraft, skins, weapons, and loadouts have been defined and are included in the pack.

    The missions
The missions in this pack form a syllabus for an OCU course, similar to that undertaken by Ian Black at RAF Binbrook, which is broken down into the following phases:
    Basic aircraft handling.
    Basic navigation.
    Basic radar operation.
    Advanced radar operation.
Radar assisted interceptions, with a varying degree of difficulty based on the angle-off of an approaching enemy. Includes high and low altitude, high and low speed, and combinations of these.
Air-to-air refuelling (AAR), using radar to acquire the ‘tanker’.
Air combat manoeuvres (ACM) against solo and multiple bogeys, using training rounds to record ‘kills’.
Air gunnery school, using live weapons against drone targets.
Ground gunnery school, using live weapons against static ground targets.
Formation flying, culminating in a diamond-9 flypast to celebration OCU graduation.

  14. Static WOE Stock Aircraft Pack

This mod includes .ini files and details on how to make static versions of all of the stock aircraft in WOE, to populate your airfields.

    [updated to v1.1]
I included too many statics in the v1.0 pack - due to my 'clean' WOE install not being as clean as I had envisaged (I had inadvertantly added Carrier-based aircraft to my clean WOE install without mentioning where they could be sourced. Oops. Sorry about that). This new pack now contains just the original (out-of-the-box) static aircraft for WOE.

    [Credits]
Many thanks to TK for providing the originals as part of WOE. If there are any problems with these mods then please contact me directly, not ThirdWire. Thanks.

    [Light and Heavy Statics]
There are two versions of the stock statics included here: light statics and heavy statics.

Light = Friendly aircraft, minimal hit on FPS, not destroyable
Heavy = Enemy aircraft, full detail and destroyable (ideal for strafing missions!)

Installation instructions are included in the readme.

    [sample Statics Display Mission]
I've included a sample mission file _Stock WOE Static Lineup.msn for you to see each Static in the game and get some idea how you display and position them.

  15. Dawn raid on static aircraft at Dong Hoi (WOV)

This upload includes a strafing mission and details on creating 'touchable' static Mig-17F and Mig-21F aircraft for use with that mission.

Based out of Hue, you and a wingman in F-4Es head North at dawn to Dong Hoi to knock out the EWR and as many parked static aircraft as you can.

Waypoints are provided to get you there and home again, so you could set autopilot on and just watch the show.

  16. Black Buck 1 (WOV) v2.10

Welcome to Operation Black Buck 1 - SE Asia Style!

    [update v2]
This update uses the A-Team's Vulcan B2 add-on aircraft, instead of the Victor B2 of the previous versions. I've also removed some of the static aircraft that populated Puh Cat and Cam Rahn Bay. Now you're left with Vulcan B2 and Victor K2 statics, which simplifies the installation process.

    [update v2.10]
This mod has been updated on request to remove direct links to any Capun and A-team prerequisite models. Instead, please contact Capun for access - details enclosed.

    [Credits]
First, many thanks and all credit to the A-team and their contributors for producing the Vulcan B2 and Victor K2 add-on aircraft and also for granting me permission to post the related B2 and K2 mods which this mission relies upon. If there are any problems with this mission or referenced B2 and K2 mods then please contact me directly, not the A-team. Thanks.

    [Why?]
Some people have asked Why? or Why do this RAF mission for WOV? Well, until the Falklands add-on (courtesy of Kesslebrut et al) becomes available this is the nearest mission profile you can fly for the Vulcan or Victor aircraft that mimics the essential parts of the Black Buck missions.

    [Overview]
Pilot your Vulcan B2 V-Bomber to rendezvous with Victor K2 tankers rotating out of Phu Cat and then on to your target of the Hong Gai generator station in the far North, a key strategic target.

    [Historical Basis]
The transition and attack of the target in this mission replicates many of the aspects of the original Black Buck mission from Ascension Island to Port Stanley airfield in the Falklands in May 1982, all within the confines of the WOV playable area. See http://www.britains-smallwars.com/swbooks/Vulcan-607.html for a detailed account of that first mission. This is the nearest I could come to simulating this famous RAF mission given the geography of the maps provided with either WOE or WOV. Bascially you've got a night formation flight long distance over water to hit a target miles away from any friendly support. Oh, and then you've got to get home again. Sound familiar - read Vulcan 607.

    [installation Instructions]
ReadMe files for the mission and accompanying static aircraft installation are included in the .zip file, together with appropriate copyright information.

  17. Operation Rubicon (WOE)

    Operation Rubicon (for WOE)
Welcome to Operation Rubicon (for WOE) - where Rubicon has two meanings. First, it denotes R(ostock)uB(lockade)icon. Second, to "cross the Rubicon" is a popular idiom meaning to go past a point of no return and refers to Julius Caesar crossing the river of that name in 49 BC, deliberately as an act of war.

The objective of this mission is to attack and destroy the Soviet Northern Naval fleet undergoing repairs and maintenance in Rostock Naval Yard, East Germany. Strategically, this will stop the Soviet fleet from responding to NATO air and ground strikes on Warsaw Pact forces massing in East Germany. By this very act the NATO forces have reached the point of no return.

This mission was inspired from a Scenario in Tom Clancy's 1986 novel, Red Storm Rising (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Storm_Rising).

    Version 1.01 update
Replaced broken links to CA-hosted A-Team models in README with links to Capun's skunkworks site.
    Version 1.02 update
Removed reference to withdrawn A-Team model of Soviet Chapeav KrestaII-class cruiser. Alternative existing ship model used instead.
    Version 1.03 update
Fixed minor typos in NATO and Warsaw Pact briefings.
    Version 1.04 update
Removed reference to withdrawn A-Team model of CGN-9 cruiser. Alternative existing ship model used instead.
    Version v1.10 update
Updated on request to remove direct links to any Capun and A-team prerequisite models. Instead, please contact Capun for access - details enclosed.

    Acknowledgements
First, thank you to TK for providing an excellent platform and modding environment. Second, thanks go to all those modders that have provided the prerequisites I have used in my mission packs. Your hard work and dedication is very much appreciated.

If there are any problems with these missions and my own mods, then please contact me directly, not the authors of the prerequisites. Thanks.

    Mission Overview
This mission is complex (my most complex to-date) and involves a total of 65 NATO aircraft, drawn from USN, USMC, USAFE and RAFG, and 13 Warsaw Pact aircraft. You can take the part of each main player in the Operation and experience it from their perspective. The aircraft used on each side and their specific mission are detailed as follows:

    NATO Forces
    USN/USMC
EA-6A, departs CV-62 USS Independence on SEAD mission to destroy EWR sites near Rostock naval yard
    A-6B, similar mission as above.
A-6E, departs CV-62 on Strike mission to destroy the Soviet fleet at Rostock
KA-6D Tanker (only used in air-to-air refuelling training missions)
E-2C Hawkeye, departs CV-60 USS Saratoga on AEW mission close to East German (IG) border (AI mission only)
FA-18A, departs CV-60 USS Saratoga on CAP mission North-East of Rostock
    USAFE
F-111F, en route from RAF Lakenheath(UK) on Strike mission to destroy Soviet fleet at Rostock (returns to Jever Airbase, West Germany)
F-4G, departs Diepholz Airbase on SEAD mission to penetrate border defences and destroy SAM sites prior to strike force arriving
A-10A, departs Fassberg Airbase on Strike mission to disable enemy defences at Laage airbase
    RAFG
Harrier GR3, departs RAF Wunstorf on Strike mission to disable enemy airbase at Laage
F-4M, departs RAF Gütersloh on Strike mission to disable enemy airbase at Laage

    Warsaw Pact Forces
Mi-24 Hind, departs Laage Airbase on Intercept mission to multiple radar threats approaching from the West
MiG-29C, departs Laage Airbase on Intercept mission to radar threats from the North and also from the West
SU-27 Flanker, departs Pütnitz Airbase on Intercept mission to multiple radar threats approaching from the North-West

    Prerequisites
The prerequisites for this set of missions are extensive. However, this time I have written the README as a HTML file with links provided to each one, so they're easy to find.

It's worth remembering that stock WOE does not contain enough of the correct types of NATO or Warsaw Pact aircraft or ground objects required to model such a complex scenario as portrayed by this Operation, especially for the era I have chosen (i.e. 1979).

    Contents

Combat & Training Missions for each major player (i.e. aircraft) in the Operation
Enhancements to the GermanyCE targets file (including enemy air defences, populated harbour targets and populated airbases)
Enhancements to the Types file (to complement the targets additions)
NATO briefings (for each type of mission, includes detailed planning map)
Warsaw Pact briefings (for each type of mission)
    Comprehensive Installation Guide (i.e README)

  20. Detailed WOV Planning Map (South Vietnam)-Printer Friendly

I thought that I'd share with you my WOV Planning Map. I've been using it for mission design. It shows the whole of Southern Vietnam, up to and including the Dong Hoi airbase just North of the DMZ.

Each grid is shown, as used in-game to determine an object's position, within the map's range from X=410000 to 850000, and Y=090000 to 580000). I've re-coloured parts of the map to make them easier to see the grid lines and airbases when you print it out - either colour or gray-scale. Test so far show that it comes out neatly on a single side of A4 or Letter-sized paper.

This map is a .jpg file so it's not huge in terms of file size (only ~160k). If people want the .bmp or even the .ppt I used to construct it then please get in touch, as these are much larger files. Thanks.

    Regards, comrpnt.

  21. VMFA-531 Mission Pack I (13-17 April 1965) for WOV

This is the first in a series of Mission Packs based on written accounts taken from the mission log of VMFA-531 'Ghost' Squadron for April 1965. This Pack replicates the missions undertaken by VMFA-531 for 13th April - 17th April 1965 inclusive.

    [Acknowledgements]
I would like to thank 531_Ghost for the inspiration behind this project and Mike Wanamaker & Lee R. De Haven for writing the extracts from the original mission logs.

Also, thanks go to all those contributors that have provided an environment whereby this mission pack could be produced with a degree of realism. Without your modifications to the original WOV platform the creation of this mission pack would not be possible. I am standing on the shoulders of giants - thank you.

    Update V1.10
This mod has been updated on request to remove direct links to any Capun and A-team prerequisite models. Instead please contact Capun for access - details enclosed.

    [Pre-requisites]
This mission pack has a large number of pre-requisites due to the realism that I have tried to incorporate into the game. Please bear with me. This first Pack will require more pre-requisites than the subsequent Packs but you will get out what you put in, so the time invested in installing the pre-requisites will be worth it. The README details all necessary pre-requisites and installation instructions.

    [Contents]
    This Pack includes the following:
    1. 11 x Missions taken from the historical accounts of VMFA-531 for the dates 13th April 1965 to 17th April 1965.
    2. Detailed mission briefing pages for each mission.
    3. The VMFA-531 mission log for April 1965.
    4. New VMFA-531 pilot skins.
    5. Static F-4B aircraft.
    6. New loadout definitions for the F-4B.
    7. Target definitions for each mission.

If there are any problems with the missions then please contact me directly, not the authors of the pre-requisites. Thanks.

During the course of 2008 I intend to post more mission packs that carry on where the last one left off, working through all of the missions identified in the original Mission Log write-up. That's about 60 missions in total!

As usual, feedback and comments always greatly appreciated.

Hope you like it. Regards, comrpnt.

  22. Carrier Missions Pack (SFP1/SFG/WOE) V2.10

Carrier Missions and Training Pack for SFP1/SFG
Welcome to the ‘Pack’ for Strike Fighters Project 1(SFP1)/Strike Fighters Gold(SFG)*, which provides basic carrier training and operations missions using (mostly) stock aircraft.

*Although only tested in SFP1/SFG, it has been reported to me that these missions and the Libyan terrain work equally well in Wings Over Europe (WOE).

    Updated to V2.00
This mission pack has had a major update.
    1. Re-vamped US fleet to be defined as types and also targets, to greatly simplify mission file contents and make it quicker to load missions.
    2. Re-wrote ReadMe to point at currently available ships from the A-team - ReadMe is now also in HTML to make it easier to link to all pre-reqs.
    3. Renamed mission files to make it easier to distinguish between carrier training (CT) and carrier operations (CO) missions.

    Updated v2.10
This mod has been updated on request to remove direct links to any Capun and A-team prerequisite models. Instead, please contact Capun for access - details enclosed.

    Acknowledgements & Disclaimer
Thank you to all those modders that have provided the prerequisites I have used in my mission packs. If there are any problems with these missions and my own mods, then please contact me directly, not the authors of the prerequisites. Many thanks.

    Missions Included in this Pack

    The stock aircraft provided for are: A-4B, A-4C, A-4F, F-4B and F-4J.

The Mission Pack also includes bonus missions written as a special request for the A-5A that include a long-range low-level Nuclear strike mission.

The naming conventions used for each mission are described as follows:

Stock Aircraft (using A-4B as example):

...Watch out for multiple SAMS and AAA en route – stay low and fast
...Watch your fuel supply – avoid using AB - you'll be on vapours on final approach!
CO-LB A-5A(SN) = As above but at night. (Landing is just after dawn)
CO-LB A-5A(SBW) = As above but in daylight in bad weather
CO-LB A-5A(SBWN) = As above but at night in bad weather

*Night is depicted by just before dawn (~05:00) so that landings are in twilight (because the fleet is not illuminated in Stock SF and I wanted to make it at least possible to have some idea where to land after the mission is complete).

**Bad weather is depicted by heavy low cloud and rain.

Read the enclosed Mission Briefing .jpgs for more details about each operations and refuelling mission.

Waypoints are provided to guide you to the tanker or target, then onto approach and home, landing back on the carrier.

Pre-requisites are listed in the README, together with installation instructions.

  24. Operation Steel Dawn - Vulcan + Blue Steel (WOE)

    Operation Steel Dawn (for WOE)

Welcome to Operation Steel Dawn (for WOE)

This missions pack contains two scenarios using the Vulcan B2 and Blue Steel standoff nuclear missile.

The objective of the first scenario is to attack and destroy the Soviet Northern Naval fleet undergoing repairs and maintenance in Rostock Naval Yard, East Germany. This scenario requires installation of comrpnt’s Operation Rubicon mission pack for WOE.

The second scenario’s objective is to destroy a Soviet regional Command & Control HQ located at Wittstock air base. This scenario is standalone for WOE and does not require any prerequisite objects in order to play – only small modifications to selected INI files.

Both scenarios are offered in both clear and bad weather formats.

If there are any problems with these missions and my own mods, then please contact me directly, not the authors of the prerequisites. Thanks.
