Cheers! Just been messing around with random textures not knowing what I’m doing or how it actually works. I think that the verity & detail could be endless if we keep experimenting though. Especially if talented terrain artists like yourself have a go at making some terrain specific noise, then we could all be in for a a real treat. -

malibu43 Ok, I just did a test & I see what you mean. I toned it down a little & the shimmering seems to be gone. Give this one a try in the GH3 terrain. http://www.sendspace.com/file/jmchtf -

Brain32: Looks good! It's a pity you lose the detail once you get higher up though.Even a noisenormal of 4096 x4096 seems to have no or little effect of the frame rate. malibu43: With terrain that's highly detailed like Stary’s tiles some effects are not as noticeable with all that fantastic detail that's already there. - If you can’t see much change try ALT+C till the sun is at a lower angle & you should see a drastic change in the detail. Between 11:00 & 14:00 the effects are less noticeable. Failing that try using one of the stronger more textured noisenormal texture.. There seems to be a limit on how course a nose effect you can youse on every terrain before shimmering occurs. Cretan terrains seem to handle stronger noise effects better than others though. - Try using a softer noise texture & see if it helps or if you still want to use that spesific texture you can try lowering the contrast or adding a bit of blur a little in a image editor so that its a little softer. - Also experiment with upping your graphics card settings, anti-aliasing & so on to see if that helps. -

Doubt it for everyone but I’m glad some of you are enjoying the effects at least. I’ve been imagining different noise textures for each terrain tile. Don’t think it can be done but its nice to imagine what a sand effect blending in to a grass effect would look like. I’ve been playing around with theses for a while now. Got the idea remembering when some great terrain mods were made for Lock On. The main visual ingredient was achieved by enhancing the ground noise texture. The terrain gurus here have been messing around with the “waternormal.bmp” for ages, with some fantastic results. I’m surprised we haven't seen more mods for ground texture already! Just out of interest, if you create a new texture by tiling one of them to something stupid like 2048 x 2048 or 4096 x4096 you can get very high detail very low down. Not that impressive for flying but great for close up screenshots of ground objects. Stock Desert -

Its amazing what can be done with the NOISNORMAL.bmp file. The possibilities seem endless.......... Anatolia Project v2 2.0 by pureblue with starys GermanyCE enhanced tileset . Stock Israel terrain with Enhanced SF2 Israel Terrain-by-CA-Stary. The grainy textured feel has been achieved by using an alternative ground texture filter with the terrain. The ones I used in those screen shots can be found here. http://combatace.com/files/file/12378-ground-effects-collection/ Give it a try. Here’s 2 shots of the stock Desert terrain with an alternative noise texture applied. No editing, just been resized promise!!! -

Ground Effects Collection --------------------------------- Just a few sample noise textures from the hordes I have collected & been experimenting with. They replace the stock noisenormal.bmp that create an impressive feeling of substance, texture & speed at low level. Enhancing already detailed terrains & giving new life to older low rez tiles. :-) Installation: --------------- Select a NOISENORMAL.bmp from on of the numbered folders & place it in the specific terrain folder that you intend to use it for. E.G.: \Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\Terrains\Desert Notes: -------- Terrain texture needs to be set to High or Unlimited to see the effects!!!! Best results are when that sun is at a lower angle, at noon the ground effect is not as visible!!!! Some noise textures work better than others on some terrains! You'll have to experiment with what works best with your particular tile set. As a guide this is what I use but you may find others more suitable. Desert: NOISENORMAL - 2 Grass or foliage: NOISENORMAL - 7 General: NOISENORMAL -3 Problems/bugs: ------------------ All texturs have been tested in SF2 fully mereged. (BuildDate=Aug 2011) I have noticed no adverse effects on my system & game settings! However.... Some users could experience slight haze or shimmering depending on there system, game & graphics card settings. My FPS seems unaffected but some users could experience a slight FPS drop. Credits: --------- These textures have been made’ free to use’ & have been collected from a variety of locations on the net. All credit goes to their original creators & only minor changes have been done by me. Enjoy SF -

So I’m finally enjoying the benefits of Windows 7! It’s a totally different experience compared to XP. Great to finally see things as they were meant to be. Just amazing!! So much to do, so many choices. I don’t know which install, what terrain or season or what aircraft to play with first. I kind of want to do it all at the the same time. He he Long live the Strike Fighters series, its just the best!!!! Just a few randoms................ -

I think having played the Strike Fighters series almost exclusively the last few years being back in the LO world again just felt strange. Love the way things feel from the cockpit of the SF world. Every thing just flows smoothly & feels right. I guess its that’s & the endless possibilities that got me hooked in the first place. What a pleasure flying such a nicely made Fulcrum in the SF environment. Think I’ll be off to find a Su-27 next. -

After ages of enjoying western aircraft I got the urge to take some good old Soviet steel for a spin! I fell in love with Russian aircraft years ago starting with EA’s Su-25 Sturmovik. Followed by the Su-27 in the original Flanker series & later the MiG-29 when Flanker 2.5 arrived. For me there was just something special & mysterious about the Russian birds. So I wiped the dust off my old faithful Flanker/Fulcrum machine (Lock On Flaming Cliffs) & took the MiG-29 for a spin. Now I can’t tell you why as I have had loads of flying this sim but I was grossly disappointed. Something didn’t feel right. So I uninstalled & downloaded dast24’s Pack for the TMF MiG-29A instead. After customising the sounds, loadouts & so on to my personal taste I took her for a spin, Pleased to be back in my familiar Third Wire environment & in the seat of a beautifully made Fulcrum. What a beauty! The way she flew & handled gave me the feeling I was looking for……..I was flying a real plane! I don’t why I didn’t bother installing this earlier, I’ve seriously been missing out. What a great aircraft! Final checks before take off. Canopy coming down. Full afterburner. Levelling off. Armed with 4 AA-8’s & a mixed load out that included an R-27ER & a R-27ET. Fantastic sense of emersion from the office. (Not 100% sure about those mirrors though. They seem to dominant the view.) Over my shoulder the rat race carries on below. Fulcrum's sky's! Parking & shutting down. -
Noise & Water after Sep 2011 update?
steelflanker posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Is it just me or are the NOISENORMAL & WATERNORMAL not being displayed after applying the Sep 2011 update? With graphics set to Unlimited I have no bumps on my ground texture & my rivers & sea are motionless!! This may be the effect of me being one of the only losers still using Windows XP & DX9? Has anyone else noticed this? Another minor issue is that if I select a different skin for each aircraft in my flight. The patch displayed is always the last colour scheme I’ve selected & wont change when I select the previous or the next aircraft. Any idears? Thanks SF Complete Merged install Windows XP DX9 Graphics Unlimited Clean ( NO MODS) -
Noise & Water after Sep 2011 update?
steelflanker replied to steelflanker's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I guess because some people don’t have the faculties to upgrade there software when they please. If XP is not broke & still doing its job then the £70 odd quid for Windows 7 can be used for other family essentials like children’s school clothes or internet & electric bills! Or perhaps for some, an operating system upgrade would make better sense if done together with a hardware up grade. In my case at least I should have a new rig running Windows 7 & DX10 in a few weeks. But with a growing family & financial climate the way it is at the moment, one thing is for sure, I will most likely be one of the last people to up grade to Windows 8 or 9 in the future! Not a “masochist fetish” but rather a matter of priorities. SF
