  1. Historic Photos restored

See, this is what bugs me when people say that a movie from before 2000 or so isn't worth seeing in HD or on Bluray because "HD wasn't around then." Photos have VERY high resolution, depending on the quality of the film, the camera that took it, and what condition it's in. If this doesn't prove that a good restoration of ANY film can make it look as good as the day it was taken, I don't know what can.
  2. TWA Flight 800

It's not a new claim, it's a very old one brought back to life.
  3. Just to clarify, which folder do we put the renamed 5E2 BMPs in? Which is the "main" folder? I could logically argue several.
  4. The Site Being Back Up

There is no limit to the crap others will inflict on you for their own personal gain...that includes messing around with a site dedicated to our hobby like this one. Bad news is the site was down longer than expected, good news is we headed 'em off at the pass and they never actually got to do a thing. Erik has been the only casualty, but what a casualty...
  5. Which is, of course, a misleading label for what is done there. When someone asks me to turn the light down, I don't put a bag over their head.
  6. At a bare minimum, DX10 and 11 do the same things as DX9 faster. So for the same picture quality you get better performance. Of course, over the years devs tend to throw other features in as well, ones that would bring a DX9 system to its knees, so the overall performance in DX10 and 11 tends to be lower than in DX9...even though it looks better. Depending on how this is done, we could get any combination of improved performance and picture.
  7. The Hollow US Air Force, We're fucked.....

I'm on my 15 month of unemployment now (not paid, that ran out last month) from the defense industry, and all I did was IT. Not that they didn't still need the job done, they just insourced it and gave the jobs to civilians who were barely qualified to do the job while us contractors who did the job almost flawlessly got the boot. They couldn't pay both, and they always cut the contractors first. Of course, we weren't just defense. The loss of the shuttle program has done its part (which we supported as well).
  8. Another wildfire

Yes, but I think as an overall plan CO has too many buildings and too many trees for that to be a viable plan going forward. Of course, controlled burns have their downsides too. We had one here last year I think that got out of control. It burned like 3x the area it should have I believe, and a couple of roads had to be closed due to smoke. No property damage or injuries, though, it just went too far. I remember 1998 was a particularly bad year here for fires too.
  9. I just did a test. I can confirm Xfire 2.0 (the in-game overlay) doesn't work, although I don't know that it ever did. Not all games support it. I also didn't get any screenshots. Xfire did detect I was in the game, though, my G15 keyboard display confirmed that. No idea what the deal is, maybe some versions of Il-2 work and others don't, or maybe it was older versions of Xfire that did. Ok...I took a look and figured it out. Typical Xfire screwup. The xfire_games.ini file is wrong. It's located in C:\ProgramData\Xfire (which is a hidden folder, you may need to ensure you can hidden files and folders to get in there). Search the file and you'll find these 3 entries: [4214_1] LongName=IL-2 Sturmovik Collection ShortName=il2fb LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\directory LauncherExe=il2fb.exe LauncherUsernameArgs=-name "%UA_GAME_HOST_USERNAME%" LauncherNetworkArgs=%UA_GAME_HOST_NAME%:%UA_GAME_HOST_PORT% %UA_LAUNCHER_USERNAME_ARGS% Launch=%UA_LAUNCHER_EXE_PATH% %UA_LAUNCHER_EXTRA_ARGS% %UA_LAUNCHER_NETWORK_ARGS% ServerStatusType=IL2 [4214_2] LongName=IL-2 Sturmovik Collection ShortName=il2fb LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\InstallPath LauncherExe=steam.exe DetectExe=SteamApps\common\il 2 sturmovik 1946\il2fb.exe Launch=%UA_LAUNCHER_EXE_PATH% -applaunch 15320 %UA_LAUNCHER_EXTRA_ARGS% InGameRenderer[0]=OGL InGameRenderer[1]=D3D8 InGameFlags[0]=ENABLE_MOUSE|USE_DINPUT1|USE_DINPUT_MOUSE InGameFlags[1]=ENABLE_MOUSE|USE_DINPUT1|USE_DINPUT_MOUSE [4214_3] LongName=IL-2 Sturmovik Collection ShortName=il2fb LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Installdir LauncherExe=il2fb.exe LauncherUsernameArgs=-name "%UA_GAME_HOST_USERNAME%" LauncherNetworkArgs=%UA_GAME_HOST_NAME%:%UA_GAME_HOST_PORT% %UA_LAUNCHER_USERNAME_ARGS% Launch=%UA_LAUNCHER_EXE_PATH% %UA_LAUNCHER_EXTRA_ARGS% %UA_LAUNCHER_NETWORK_ARGS% ServerStatusType=IL2 The middle entry is for the Steam version, the other 2 are for disc-based versions, both FB and 1946. You should see instantly that the issue is the xfire 2.0 stuff is only listed for the Steam version. The solution is twofold: Copy these lines: InGameRenderer[0]=OGL InGameRenderer[1]=D3D8 InGameFlags[0]=ENABLE_MOUSE|USE_DINPUT1|USE_DINPUT_MOUSE InGameFlags[1]=ENABLE_MOUSE|USE_DINPUT1|USE_DINPUT_MOUSE And place them at the end of the other 2 entries. I can't tell you which one because I don't know how Xfire is detecting your game. In my case, it was the first one and not the 3rd that needed those lines. Save that file, then re-run "detect games" in Xfire--important part because if you don't it won't work. After I added those 4 lines to the first entry, when I started Il-2 I saw the Xfire window pop up in the lower right, and after I hit ScrLk+S in game I was presented with the screenshot window on exiting Il-2.
  10. Riding the lightning

I thought it was about Metallica. That was one hair-raising experience, I'm sure.
  11. Another wildfire

Maybe the program of controlled burns needs to be expanded. That or all forests must be cleared within a mile of buildings I guess.
  12. Silly, but funny, televison ads

The number of times I've seen "banned" on these commercials I remember seeing like 100 times on TV leads me to believe they're dropping the "in Afghanistan by the Taliban in the late 90s" from the title.
  13. Red Line means what?

We'll know in about 30 years.
  14. The Hollow US Air Force, We're fucked.....

I don't see why they need to take the cuts from the combat units. Let the REMFs have their salaries and benefits cut. We don't need some vast army of GS-14s in suits bringing in 6 figures a year with cushy pensions and awesome benefits screwing over the enlisted people just getting by or impacting the very things that are the reasons for the military's existence. The DoD is not there to ensure that civilians can make good money with little to no fear of losing their job without gross incompetence. At the base I worked at there weren't that many in uniform, most were civilians who were considered "hard workers" if they actually put in 5 hrs of work in a day. Military waste isn't $500 hammers. It's having a department of 30 people to do a job that in the private sector would be handled by 10, 10 that would all make less and get worse benefits, but would for certain work harder because their jobs actually depended on working hard. Cut that by 25% and you'd see that 10% cut easily achieved WITHOUT grounding planes, cancelling training, or sacrificing any readiness.
  15. Red Line means what?

The problem is not nearly enough will accept that the US doesn't NEED to intervene in every damn thing that happens out there. Once you accept the resolution that the US MUST do something, you instantly are faced with the relative choice of backing "Hitler" or "Stalin." Neither one of those groups deserves to win, but the sad truth is the ME region is now such that absent a tyrannical dictator ruling with an iron fist, you get a happily elected tyrannical organization(s) that rules with an iron fist. Anyone who attempts to rule WITHOUT the iron fist is soon overthrown by someone who is. I think looking back the US should've just let Saddam take Kuwait and be done with it. Then Iran could've resumed their war with them except without US assistance and the whole area could've devolved into fighting amongst itself WITHOUT US.
  16. More PAK-FA footage

It seems a combination of that with the F-15's "nodding" intakes.
  17. Yes, DCS allows spawning at any time once the mission starts, which is a big help.
  18. It's a one-time activation on install via internet. It stays in your registry so you can uninstall/reinstall on the same PC/Windows install to your heart's content without reactivating. There is a limit, but you can deactivate the install if you remember to and gain them back, in case of reloading/upgrading Windows or getting a new PC.
  19. More PAK-FA footage

So, is the opposite a "well-endowed" spin? See, China, THAT is the size you make landing gear doors!
  20. Happy 238th Birthday United States Army

You know, it doesn't look a day over 224.
  21. 100 Years RNlAF / KLu

The ticket to fly there is not.
  22. Only thing I didn't like about SF1's MP was the requirement that the only planes that could be seen in a mission had to be flyable. So unless you had lots of flyable plane mods shared by all, you couldn't do heavy bomber intercepts or escorts. It was always 8v8, a max of 4 types, 2 sides, and one group was pretty much A2A only while the other side could be A2A, A2G, or A2A escorting A2G. I would've liked a little more flexibility and more planes possible (basically made it more like the SP missions as far as what you could randomly see). Still, even with those limitations, it was the only place to go to fly Korean, Vietanam, or late 70s/early 80s planes in coop or H2H.
  23. Eagle Dynamics DCS Series Summer Sale

Wow, the UH-1 will be only $20. That's a great price for something so recent. CA for $12 too.
  24. SImply put, these DLCs and the removal of needing a particular title to install a particular expansion pack signify nothing. Those actions support both the hypothesis that Exp 3 is coming and since it wasn't really nailed to a particular theater he just made this global change, or that he's "cleaning house" with a few DLCs before he devotes himself full time to mobile and the Expansion change just means he can get a little more mileage from people buying Exp 1 that don't have/want SF2I (not sure why you'd want it in that case) or Exp 2 that don't have/want SF2E (ditto!) and earn more from existing product. We literally can't read anything into it, because the observed activities support both scenarios, good and bad.
  25. I'll admit it's been forever since I tried to take a pic in Il-2 with Xfire (it's been a year since I played it period). Are you using default scroll lock + s as the mapping? You didn't map scroll lock within Il-2 did you? I'm stumped.
