  1. Well, while the range of the 120D can be considered a better missile than the 54 despite its lesser range, the point is the Super Hornet also has less range than an F-14, thereby decreasing the maximum unrefueled intercept distance from a CBG. Of course, fleet defense is not the same today as it was in the 70s and 80s, so the USN seems comfortable with the reduction in range.

The NATF was cancelled because of how much it was going to cost the USN. It was decided the new Super Hornet could do most of that mission, replacing the F-14 that is, for a fraction of the price, and they were getting them to replace the A-6E anyway. The AESA radar it has is far superior to the F-14's anyway for sheer versatility, if not range (which is classified).

The original F/A-18A was never a stopgap, it was planned as what it turned out to be--the replacement for a variety of planes including the A-7 that could do both AA and AG combat in one sortie, as was proved in the Gulf War in 1991.

The biggest stopgap in service right now is the B-1B, with a mere 100 bought as it was only to serve until the ATB nee B-2 came into service. However, instead of 132 B-2s, we only bought 21, so the stopgap is now the numerically most significant strategic asset. Oddly the B-52 is still in 2nd place in terms of numbers, and won't be going away anytime soon.

  2. I think peter01's revised FM .ini's are about it as far as stock planes go. Other than that, grab the multitude of 3rd party planes out there and you'll see they generally are less forgiving about that stuff than TK's work as they're more concerned with realism than the playability that TK strives for.

  3. Well, for one I think they're betting on existing owners of CFS3. I paid full price for CFS3--when it came out in what, 2003? That was 5 years ago! I also paid for Firepower a few years ago. I admit I've barely touched CFS3 for over 2 years since the guy I flew coop with lost his CD and couldn't reinstall, but I still have it on my HD.

Come to think of it, I have MAW DLd but I've yet to install THAT...a project for a rainy day I guess.

Anyway, $50 is what I've spent on the 2 First Eagles releases, while I got all the extras for them for free. Ironnically this looks to have more in it than FE does on install, so I don't think the price is out there. Only the need to own CFS3 already is an issue. If they could get their hands on some copies of CFS3 dirt cheap they could bundle with OFF that likely would help them, yes.

Oh, anyone who thinks you don't need competition and advancement--just look how much CFS3 still is almost FIVE years after release. Good old MS, won't drop the price on anything if there's no replacement.

  5. Well, the mule is much larger than the mountain lion. It didn't live that long by being stupid, you attack the creature that's more your size as your chances are better. I'm sure it had no idea the mule would attack it.

  6. I don't think you'll find any SATA chipset drivers that support Win98.

However, you should be able to get by with "generic". The clue is the BIOS setting. Each manufacturer does it differently, so you'll have to search your BIOS for the exact naming. It may talk about SATA/Legacy, or AHCI, or some other thing you're not expecting. Basically it will make the SATA appear like standard IDE to the OS.
