A great disturbance in the Force
Typhoid replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I agree. Its the open nature of this sim with the ability to mod, and then mod the mods that make this a long lasting sim and community. It is superb. The financial investment in getting the programs to build some of this stuff should also be fully recognized and if someone wants or feels the need to charge for his stuff - that should be recognized as well. There are those sites to and ownership should be respected. but the "I'm taking my toys home" attitude is nonsense. but there will always be those who do that for whatever reason. The loss is more his than the rest of us, so be it and hope the door doesn't them in the @$$ too hard on his way out. its an open sim (within limits) and that will generate mods and the demand for more mods. Hope it stays that way. -

and spent a month on Shemya one afternoon............... Looking forward to it! -
yup. the newer carriers just haven't aged that far - yet. They will all go through that in turn and we will continue to rotate the airwings to the available decks, and the squadrons between the wings.

I'd be glad to help QC any draft WIP on this score. Unfortuneately, I don't have the time to do much work on developing a sound mod. One thing I would like to see is much better controller comm that replaces the clock code with more accurate bearing and range. I don't know how that would work with the current engine though. -

Brainless Question No.9
Typhoid replied to Brainless's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
well, going back to the original querry in this thread - the Cesare and Cavour are two Axis BB's that might serve as a proxy target. There is also the Repulse, Brooklyn and another Russian CL available. I've been using all of them in some mission building. -

I've flown a mission against the location where the cruiser is on those terrain, no luck. The DD shows up and generally fills the air with flak, but no cruiser. I'm wondering if something needs to be downloaded and added in. -

Why Superhornets for the RAAF? Official DOD position
Typhoid replied to MiGMasher's topic in Military and General Aviation
there are quite a lot of systems and tactics to enable a positive ID. but of course, nothing is absolutely certain. In the Gulf War I (Desert Storm) the JFACC would not permit the USN to employ the Phoenix and kept the F-14's out of the central air to air war for precisely those reasons. But even with solid networking, we still have problems getting a good ID and shooting the right guys (a couple of Army Blackhawks by F-15s and Hornets & Tornados by Patriot come to mind). but the various systems included on the marginally more stealthy SH (as compared to anything other than the F117, F22 and F35) and the Link-16 integration with other sensors do give a measure of more assurance of what we are engaging BVR. -
yup. precisely. And yes - SLEP stands for Service Life Extension Program which was run on all the older carriers. About a two year megabillion effort that adds another 15 years of use to the ship. Sorry, should have spelled that out.

nope. I had a most enjoyable afternoon with my daughters boyfriend (a USAF Academy graduate) and all of us Navy and Marine Corps types watching Navy trounce the Falcons!

awesome!! I flew with this squadron in this aircraft in 1980. Thanks for the skin, means a lot to me. -
CVW's don't usually change tailcodes - unless they switch coasts - but they will cross deck to different ships. So the Fin Flash will generally be consistent with the air wing, but will NOT be consistent with a ship. We actually have one less airwing than ship since one carrier is usually in SLEP or rework or something. When it comes out, another goes in and the airwings all cross deck.

flying out of Misawa we were supposed to avoid flying over it since it messed up the signal processing. We weren't always able to comply with the needed hard turn....... -

i've got a few photos in the archives myself. Anything in particular on your shopping list? spent some real "fun" times flying off of boats in the Northwest Pacific. HF is High Frequency. DF is Direction Finding. the elephant cage measures the time of arrival of a signal at each element and derives the bearing from that. The various sites are all linked and the bearings can then be used to compute the location. Lots of those around operated by quite a few operators of various political persuasions. The Soviets operated quite a few and linked them with their site in Cuba to get the cross bearing. We have, one or two, around as well...... -
right on, shipmate! but didn't we already beat their, uh, mule?

standard HF DF site -
I don't recognize those fin flashes, but this site has some info; http://gonavy.jp/AirWingsf.html I think the RA-5C as an airframe was probably the best because of its high sustained speed. It could leave anything in the dirt. But the avionics and recon equipment were not anywhere near what what is available now. but in my estimation the best recon platform was a KH and a number...... "Hey Rube" - sounds like a call for something - don't recall that one off the top.
