Paratroopers gone wrong
grumpapotamus posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I finally downloaded and added theC-47, for a campaign idea I had. I installed the paratroopers as the Readme said. Now paratroopers come up as a selection for some aircraft! (The Gina actually had them in the scripted loadout for single mission!) img00013.bmp -
DESTROYED.LOD files
grumpapotamus posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I have finished a simple ground object. The Model works, but I cannot get the OBJECTDESTROYED.LOD file I created to work for it. When I destroy it, only smoke and a crater are left. -

F/A-18A / CF-188 Hornet Hud problem and solution.
grumpapotamus replied to MigHound's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I tried resizing the file, and now both the CF-18 and F/A-18 have a green block instead of a white one! (I am using the ATI RADEON X1600 PRO) -

Here are the lines in the ini file. Also, I have repeated these in the terrain file Target Types.ini. [GroundObjectData] DamagedModel= DestroyedModel=radardome_DESTROYED.LOD DestroyedEffect=LargeShortStructureCollapse EmptyMass=286228.00 Component[001]=Body I tried the warehouse_DESTROYED.LOD as the destroyed file, which worked. The model I made doesn't? (the destroyed model was tested adndoes show in the game, when used as the primary) -
Couple of noob WOV question
grumpapotamus replied to PythonOne's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I use the POV hat3 on my X52, which is a bit faster. When I had the mouse wheel working on my HOTAS, it was very fast. (having some issues with the actual mouse and the X52 mouse device conflicting) -
Missing WIPs
grumpapotamus posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Will there be anyone working on the Indian Tejas fighter or some of the new Chinese aircraft. Personally, I think they would be great additions. It seems the modern arms market isn't as polarized as it used to be, so the best price dictates whose aircraft is in whose inventory.(outside of the world powers) I guess that will make the nations.ini file a bugger to edit! (If my 3DSmax skills get any better, I would take on the modelling. But this will probably be a loooong way offf!) -
modeling in 3DSmax trial version
grumpapotamus posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I have created a model but am having problems skinning/colouring. When I place the object into the terrain, it causes CTD when the view get close enough to it. I am using the trial version of 3DSmax 9. I can e-mail or post the max file if anyone cares to check it out and help me out. It is a model of a Natural gas storage tank- good targets! -
modeling in 3DSmax trial version
grumpapotamus replied to grumpapotamus's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hello Capun, Thanks for the help. I did read the old exporter notes, and I did convert it without decals. I collapsed the object into a single mesh. As far as the poly count- I just see vertices and faces(3040/5656)- maybe this is the problem. ! I did get the object to appear in the game without crashing when I first finished, but the scale was off. I readjusted and it worked fine. The problem started when I tried to add colour/texturing. Reading the old exporter notes I found confusing, as they were written in 2001. I will keep at it, and hopefully get this resolved. As for getting a student license- I hope art/design school alumni count! (might make paying off the student loan worthwhile) -

Here is the link for the trial download. I don,t know if it is the full thing or not. There is no watermark feature, etc- left on your work either! http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index...&id=5972446 -Also, you can still download the 3DSmax 7 and 8 versions. I found them through google. -
static aircraft
grumpapotamus posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
A bit of a diversion from haw to add... I have converted the C-130A into a groundobject and added it to the Range terrain airfield as a ground object. This way they are purely scenery as well as targets. I am not sure, but using them the other way could possibly cause memory problems for low memory computers in missions with a lot of aircraft? Otherwise this is an alternative method for adding static aircraft. I am having trouble though. No aircraftdestroyed.lod file exists(as far as I know). Also the positioning is a bit tricky, as per th image. If anyone can help, let me know. img00016.bmp -
static aircraft
grumpapotamus replied to grumpapotamus's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
I thought that might be the reason. As for the groundobject file, I did create one following the format from other third party groundobjects. (I am running combined WOV/WOE, so no objectdata.ini to worry about) The parked aircraft in the image are actually placed as ground objects. Also the planes are there every time fly a mission from the Range terrain's airfield! When I destroy the aircraft, it reverts to the targetaircraftdestroyed.lod as that is what I set it to. As for the 3DMax files, I have no program that can edit them, which will probably end this experiment. I figured it would be a good way to learn ini editting, as I am new at modding. Ultimately, I would have liked to have these as tarped up aircraft, or as otherwise in a state of repair, etc. I would assume a new skin would do this well. -I have not checked to see if the static AC will be there if I start a mission pre 1956 as per the activeyear I have set in the RangeTypes.ini file. -Also, I would love to know a good 3D program which doesn't cost thousands and can edit or convert to 3Dmax files, as I would love to create more eye candy for the countryside. -
How to add parked aircraft?
grumpapotamus replied to tank03's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Hello, I have been trying to convert the static aircraft into groundobjects, like trucks and buildings. I am having some trouble, and need an aircraftdestroyed.lod file. Also if there is some info on groundobject ini editting, it would be appreciated. I like a bit of eye candy in all the missions! -
I remember hearing of similar problems with F-16s in the 80's when crossing the equator.

Nice Job, Any chance of a Yak-38 coming out too? Would be nice with Marcfighter's Kiev class ships. (when they're done.) -
Falklands update
grumpapotamus replied to Kesselbrut's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Looks Great! I love the detail in the scenery. If I had the software and time, I'd be adding towns and buildings just like those! (got an art Degree I should put to some sort of purpose!) -
terrain problems
grumpapotamus posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Hello All, I downloaded the Blood for Oil Campaign, only for the terrain. I have WOV/WOE only, but the terrain works after doing some ini tweaking. One problem is that the waterdoesn't show, as well as the odd missing tile here and there. I don't know the fix for this. (I am sure I could figure it out, but would sooner not waste too many hours!) I managed to get most terrains to work. Also, where can I find the SF1 desert terrain. Is it transferable with some editting? Would love to know. I love the terrains, the more the better! -
Hello All. I was just checking out Janes.com and came accross the aero India article. I haven't seen these planes before. I haven't noticed them on the WIP list either. The Gripen, F-16 and F-18 super hornet are done or coming, but the MiG-35... Would be a nice addition to counter the newer NATO/American planes. Hopefully I am not breaking some copywrite law posting these!

Thanks, I love those old Soviet era planes. One problem... The MiG-25PD causes CTD when loading up. I just overwrote the old MiG25PD that was avaliable from before. Is there a difference in the models? I figure erasing the file and reinstalling that plane should work, but will the other skins from the old model work. -
WoV Planning Map Front Battle Line
grumpapotamus replied to TexasBlues's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hello there, Well, there is no problem there. Historically, Rolling Thunder was an air campaign meant to bring the North to the negotiating table. Also, most of the Vietnam war was defensive for the South Vietnamese and Americans, repelling invasion and fighting the guerilla attacks. There was no American military ground advance. (though, I beleive there was incursions from Laos and pushes by the South Vietnamese with American air support) The air war, especially Rolling Thunder was about crippling the war effort of the north, and forcing them to the negotiating table. It was also a very political can of worms. Certain targets were off limits. Targets had to be ok'd by the WhiteHouse. Any Russian or Chinese ships, etc were off limits (although the cargo was fair game) for fear of drawing the USSR and China into the war. Invading and taking territory would risk the same. If the battle line would move, it should be into south Vietnam, as the North was actively invading. I don't know how the game is set up, but my guess is that for certain campaigns, that line is static. I am sure, other people with a better knowledge of the war and game will correct meand explain it further. -
adding non-flyable aircraft
grumpapotamus posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
How to edit aircraft so that they are ai controlled only. I have added many aircraft I will never fly, but would love to see as support or enemy aircraft in single missions. How to edit, or which files to delete in the aircrafts file? -
adding non-flyable aircraft
grumpapotamus replied to grumpapotamus's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Sorry, I should be more exact. I meant, how to edit so that the planes don't show up on the aircraft menu, but will still appear in the game. -
Is there an SU-25 out there, or is there one coming? I would love to gat one!
