Fixed sight (caged mode) to aim rockets
Crusader replied to Uhu's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
No, for avionics60 you can use default depression value in cockpit.ini ... but its always a compromise of bombing and rockets. For fast rockets (e.g. Zuni ) a caged sight works OK, with adjustments done by aiming lor or high, airspeed is also a factor Note that depending on game version, its possible that the sight doesnt depress if rockets are selected ( some different code), but you can depress it manually after selecting rockets by cycling the Gunsight mode to A2G -

ARI 18223 mounted in the GR.3 was not audio only, they had the usual array of threat type lights. There wasnt a full vector-type display at first though, initially there was only a quadrant-based direction display...iirc... the Brits were always hush hush about that stuff ... All that was mounted between HUD base and its crash pad/ slightly above. -

What difference between the F-8E_MF and F-8E_MF_L?
Crusader replied to AGOSTINO's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
yep.. L = late version... has audio RWR and chaff dispensers on the underside of the rear fuselage , between the forward edge of the strakes -
SF2E Cant get Harriers to VTO
Crusader replied to Hokum's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The game doesnt take into account that air and exhaust is trapped below the fuselage, between the gunpods or strakes in their place. Later Harrier models have the big strakes ( going by the name of Lift Improving Devices - LID - ) and a small air dam on the front. All this produces ~ 1000 lb or more ( depending on model/ configuration) lb of extra thrust . -
SF2E Cant get Harriers to VTO
Crusader replied to Hokum's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The maximal power with water injection is only available for a few seconds ( 15-20 or so), without damaging the engine. There is a "limiter" which the pilot can override in an emergency, but this can result in engine damage. BTW, my example above doesnt include weight of the pylons and fueltanks itself, this also applies to Hokums GR.1 math... tanks itself weight ( as a rule of thumb) 8 - 10 % of the fuel they can hold. The air for the reaction control system is bleed air taken from the engine compressor, and thus already a part of the total thrust available. And again, on a hot summer day or in the tropics, engine perfomance (available thrust) is reduced very noticable. Plus, the engine "on paper" available thrust is often not reached by engines, for one reason or another .... -
SF2E Cant get Harriers to VTO
Crusader replied to Hokum's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yup KB, thats cool.. but... ( regarding bold marked text) if a Harrier can VTO or not is simply a thing of available thrust versus aircraft weight . If you say you've seen a AV-8B taking off vertical with 4 300 gal tanks.. then the tank were not full. An AV-8B in the late 80's with F402-RR-406 enige, max (wet) thrust 21.550 lb ( availabe only for a very short time) has a Operating Empty Weight of 13.068 lb ( OEW definition - wiki ) Full internal fuel ( JP-5, 6.8 lb per Gal. ) 1184 Gal = 7.915 lb 4x 300 Gal external tanks = 7.915 lb ( cant be filled to nominal 8.160 lb) = 15.830 lb of fuel total add this to the Operating Empty weight gives 28.916 lb of total weight.. versus max availabe thrust of 21.550 . Vertical TO possible ? No Way. Even not with the latest engine which gives some 2500 lb more thrust... and the B+ also has a higher Operating Empty weight. So to be able to take off vertical, the complete aircraft configuration ( whatever configuration, fuel, bombs, etc) must be always less than available power. -
Fixed sight (caged mode) to aim rockets
Crusader replied to Uhu's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
the sight for guns is also CCIP with avionics70 why are you aming with tracers if you intend to fire rockets ? if the rocket impacts dont match the predicted impact point as indicated by the CCIP pipper, then then the CCIP is not adjusted for the rockets ( can be only done for one rocket type ) In the aircrafts avionics ini, go to the HUD section , RocketBoresightAngle= entry . ( add this line if it is missing from HUD section) Adjust it, a negative valule moves the pipper up, positive value down...iirc. -
SF2E Cant get Harriers to VTO
Crusader replied to Hokum's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
yep, and thats all correct. when they do VTO then they have only few internal fuel ( 50% and less). the Falkland pics show all LANDING aircraft, TO was ALWAYS ( except on two occasions where 2 SHARs had to land on the Amphibs) via the "ski ramp" or normal short rolling takeoff on FOB Sheatbill. when landing, external tanks were always empty and internal fuel low. Occasionaly GR.3's landed vertically with unexpended bombs, but had low internal fuel. Also keep in mind that in the cold temps in the South Atlantic the engines could operate at their max thrust. Thats not possible in "hot and high" conditions, where vertical TO/LDG performance is more restricted. AV-8A with " full combat load" ( say 4-5 mk82) has not much internal fuel -

lol be carefull, "2 weeks" is a generic term around here, effectively meaning there's no release date known ... Judging by the time intervalls between the already released SF2 series games, it will be about ~ 4-6 weeks ( plus/minus X) , now that SF2E and the patch is out. No details known yet, but you can expect the usual upgrade as on other SF2 series, like all the new code for RWR, destroyed models for aircraft and so on, new cockpit textures and probably more versions of some aircraft like the Kurnass, e.g early version with "hard" wing, late version with slats etc.... -
I've read about "Roadrunner", but it was a attack profile/method , not some hardware stuff.. IIRC. SF2E Harrier GR.3 has no radar. The big screen on the center console is the moving map which is part of the FE 541 Inertial Nav/Attack System The Harrier pits have some minor compromises for gameplay though.... Only Sea Harrier FRS.1 and FA.2 had AI radars, Blue Fox and Blue Vixen, respectively.

Moved: Thoughts on future add on etc for Thirdwire Games
Crusader replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I think many peoples fail to realize that TK is still on the same budget in 2009 as he has been back in 2002 *... and he once said that he didnt make any income at all from original Walmart SFP1 release .... Then, over the course of 6 years, he made 4 new games with constant improvments of code and features, all the time providing free upgrades for ALL his previous releases ... that itself took alot of time and money. No other game developer comes even close with such support. For future add-ons etc, I'm sure that TK will do the best he can, after all, he seems to have fun doing what he does .... and if peoples keep buying the games from his store instead of ripping it off the net thent he future looks bright .... edit : * and the value of $$$ hasnt really increased at all -

GR7 little problem
Crusader replied to greendog's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I set up a new pod with CRV-7 rockets and gave it a low rate of fire, so I can fire single rockets more easily ... For a realistic Afghanistan loadout I carry 2x 540 lb bombs on the outboard wing stations, 1x low rate pod + 1x high rate pod of CRV-7 rockets on the intermediate stations, and usually fueltanks on the inboard stations
