[Fictional] Corsair GR.1 - RAF South East Asia Command
Derk replied to Spinners's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
I always like your little background story Spinners. In the RAF Yearbook 1976 there is a great article called " Wings clipped and cancelled" with scenario's in 1945 , 1952, 1957 and 1964 including cancelled stuff like the P 1081, SARO SR 177, P1121, FD2, P1154 and of course the TSR 2. It's one great " what if " story. If you can't find it give me a PM and I'll get you the story, Hou doe, Derk -

But for the Ghurka's I probably would not exist. In 1945 my mother, 2 brothers and sister were in a Japanese prison camp at Banju Biru near Ambarawa in Java. The war had ended and the Indonesian fight for freedom had started. The camps, full of women and children in bad condition after 3 years of Imperial Japanese hospitality (read starvation and brutality), were fired upon by the Nationalists with machine guns, mortars and artillery (illegally supplied to them by the Japanese) There were just 14 Ghurka's to protect a couple of thousands Europeans. After another session of bullets and grenades, 10 of the Ghurka's left and returned after some hours. No more fire was recieved from a couple of "kampongs" (villages) and things were very quit for the next 14 days or so.......... After that the camps were succesfully evacuated to Semarang during a running battle including the use of tanks and air support by P 47's. What happened in the Semarang - Ambarawa area is an amazing story, where loyal Japanese batallions fought ALONGSIDE the British against the Indonesians. Thousands were killed, yes, after the war had ended . The Ghurka's played an important role. My mother always had the highest respect for the Ghurka's and firmly believed she would have been killed without their protection... ... As for the action in Afghanistan: probably not the smartest thing to do, but I fully understand it. !!!! Hou doe, Derk

An interesting little excercise: when taking off in full AB the wingman and the rest of the flight (same plane, same loading) are always 10 to 20kts faster in the takeoff run at the end of the tyre marks at the runway........... Always wondered why:blink:. Hou doe, Derk -

Must have been fun again, like it always was. First been there loooooong time ago in 1974 at Greenham Commons, had a litlle chat then with Douglas Bader (then the honorary president) and there was an icredible lot of exotic stuff. In later years the Queens Jubilee was the occasion where HMAS Melbourne was in Southampton and there was a demo of an A4G as well as just about everything from USS Enterprize: A7, A6, Prowler, A3D, Viking and of course the Tomcat. Greenham Commons was a big bomber base (just like Fairford) with HUGE aprons, making wonderful exhibition space. The RIAT was the living proof of the thesis that at airshows you ALWAYS see something that you have never seen before or something you will never see again...... Hou doe, Derk

Looks like there's a lot of work with the F 104's too, very expensive to move as they sit there without landing gear, so they have been there for a very looooooong time....... And don't forget to add the costs of administration and VAT and the extra costs of working under difficult circumstances (weather clouded over or maybe a slight drizzle or temperature less than 19,25 degr. or more than 20,00000001 degr.). And the fine can only be paid cash at mondays from 0.900h untill 09.05h with full moon and easterly wind and will be doubled if not paid within two days, and has to be paid fully dressed in uniform . Other conditions may be added randomly. In other words: THE new job for the assholes in the unit of Serverandenforcer......... Hou doe Derk -

No gap in the glass with me, probably has to do with the settings of the cockpit (no glare, no mirrors). Can't seem to post an image, never mind. Looking at the pics of the cockpit the F5E pit might be a good alternative too, Hou doe, Derk
