You must have had a horrible day Iwan, feel sorry for you. Went there today with my brother (retired teacher aviation technical college) and a friend of his (retired techn. officer KLu) and had a great day, though low cloudbase meant low shows. C17 tremendous, same for the Typhoon, Gripen's and Vipers and the Apache as well as the airpower demo, 8 F16's, lots of Apaches, Cougars and Chinooks and GREAT pyrotechnics !!! Sorry, no pics ( I'm not that much of a photographer, look at Milspotter for the real good stuff) and as usual the old adagium: you'll ALWAYS see something you've never seen before or will never see again. We had a very nice chat with the commanding officer of 323Sq (has 3000h+ on the F16) and a lot of technical guys, some of them ex students of my brother. For the record: open days over here never have entrance fee's, with extensive of exhibitions, stands, good catering etc. etc. , attendance usually up to 250000 people over two days and a very good international program including Red Arrows, Patrouille de France and so on. WOW !!!!! (for sure he will know a way to drink beer, I would love to have a few with this guy !!!!) Right in front of my office there is a handicapped lady running a litlle shop in all sorts of silver stuff she makes and designs herself. She's got only 1 1/2 arm and one hand (she got handicapped by her mother using a sleeping pill called Softenon which caused a big row in the '50s ) and the things she creates are absolutely wonderful...... She is the merriest person in the neighbourhood !! All those people deserve the greatest respect. Derk

Die Cessna war doch ziemlich effektiv: einer landete auf dem Roten Platz in Moskau ohne Interferenz durch MiG's oder Heli's.... Und es gab auch die Geschichte vom MiG 23 wobei der Flieger mit dem Schleudersitz ausgestiegen war wegen Problemen mit den Kraftstoffzufuhr. Die Maschine flog aber lustig weiter Richtung Westen - das Problem mit dem Kraftstoffzufuhr hat sich offenbar selbständig gelöst - und würde durch 32 TFS F 15's von Soesterberg begleitet bis es in Belgien abstürzte (wobei am Boden noch Leute getötet wurden)....... Man konnte ein Buch darüber schreiben Hou doe, Derk

One thing I've seen is that number 2 drops everything (including his ALQ 131 !!!!! ) when attacked by enemy air. That could be one of the issues and I wouldn't know how to prevent that or where it can be tweaked.. Hou doe, Derk

Hey, this is the one and only MiG 23 I ever saw during an airshow... (Eindhoven, 1993...) Quite impressive demo !!! Thanks, Hou doe, Derk

OK, noch eine Geschichte wobei sich Einiges zeigt: im Vorjahr 1964, also ganz im Anfang der F104 Periode bei uns, ging bei einem Testflug vom Flugplatz Twenthe mit dem D-8082 vom damaligen 306 Sq KLu etwas schief mit dem LN 3 Trägheitsnavigationsgerät und es gab gleichzeitig (Murphy's Law....) Undeutlichkeiten mit dem Callsign, wodurch das Flugzeug auf Ostkurs dem Eisernen Vorhang passierte und schon ziemlich weit im DDR Luftraum eingedrungen war bevor es dem Piloten (Leutnant G. Sont) klar wurde dass etwas nicht stimmte. Im Hohe von 35.000 ft drehte er so schnell wie möglich Richtung West mit vollen Nachbrenner mit einer Geschwindigkeit von Mach 1.4 (mit 4 Kraftstoffbehälter!!) . Bald wurden 2 MiG 21 gesichtet die steil aus dem Wolkendeck stiegen. Die MiG's zögerten lange genug für Sont um weiter ein zu drehen damit sie ihre Missiles nicht verwenden konnten,übrigens auch keine sonderlich gute Leistung der GCI.... Er passierte in einem Abstand von vielleicht 100 m (!) in einem 90 Grad Winkel auf dem Kurs der MiG's. In diesem Weise wurde es mit dem hohen Geschwindigkeit der F 104 für den MiG's völlig unmöglich den Starfighter noch zu überholen oder im Visier der Missiles zu kriegen. Es stellte sich später hinaus dass die MiG's das Befehl hatten den Starfighter ab zu schiessen. Sont landete in Nörvenich nachdem er erneut, aber diesmal im Westen als unidentifiziertes Ziel aus ostlicher Richtung von zwei Abfängjäger identifiziert war, glückligerweise ohne abgeschossen zu werden........ Ergo: ein F104 auf Höchstgeschwindigkeit kriegt man nicht so schnell im Visier. Von ein paar Flieger habe ich mitgekriegt das beim Einsatz mit Nuklearwaffen das letzte Stuck bis zum Ziel mit vollen Nachbrenner geflogen wurde, also auch ziemlich ungreifbar für den Gegner , bestimmt mit der Stand der Technik der damaligen Missiles.
