A final note about the piston vs. jet debate...it's the pilot's skill that matters here. Given equal pilot skills my point would always be on the one flying the jet... The P-51 looks beautiful, btw. Will it be part of a standalone game, or is it still an add-on for WOI 2?

As cynical as it may sound, but I don't see anything wrong about the Defiant having a hard time...it was removed from front line service for a reason.

I have to be overlooking something

Looks more like a Mitsubishi F-1 to me... -
About 27MM_BK27 (27mm Mauser BK27) ?
Gocad replied to AGOSTINO's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
A is closer, especially with regard to ROF. Btw, warhead weight should be 0.260 and ammo weight 0.516. -
Of course it could, but it really depends on the situation. The Brits tested a Vampire against a Spit XIV (which pretty much outclassed the Mustang in most aspects)...and the Vampire was clearly superior, performance wise. Still, given the right position and the right pilot at the controls, even a piston engined fighter would have a chance against a jet.

FAC Aircraft
Gocad replied to RAVEN's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It's not like that FAC stuff ever worked properly to begin with...interesting enough, ground troops and FAC are still talking to each other... -
Nice one! It should be interesting to see how the AI pilots would use the Defiant...

It's a good read. Nothing wrong with buying it.

Cruise Speed
Gocad replied to Stick's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
They do. Especially 3rd party aircraft with false RANGE values are prone to it. There are some prop aircraft where it happens quite often. Eventually the props stop spinning, they start to glide and loose speed until they stall and crash. -
Cruise Speed
Gocad replied to Stick's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
500 kts sounds like full throttle for some aircraft and that could affect their fuel consumption. Cruise speed is low since it's the speed you get the greatest range out of it. I doubt that an aircraft under fire would continue to fly at cruise speed, so if they do, it's more of an AI awareness issue. -
Some Phantom questions

The .BMP names are tied to the model you're using, DON'T rename them. -

Depends on the mapping and whether the D-model has been built from scratch or developed out of the A-model. Btw, gimme! -
TSR or not, the Tornado would have most likely come up anyway. Besides, I'm pretty certain that the TSR would have looked a lot less fabulous after the mid-70s. It's also worth noting that the Tornado F3 was in fact a stopgap program due to the delay of the next generation fighter program started in the mid-80s. Said program was what is called EF Typhoon today. I also have the impression that the TSR-2 would not have been as versatile as the Tornado.

Short version: The F-8H is a rebuilt F-8D. Most F-8 variants (except the A-model) were rebuilt in the 60s to extend their service life. All rebuilt F-8B, C & D received the same wing as the E-model, so they were then able carry bombs as well. The F-8H also received an avionics upgrade and had therefore the same small hump between the wings as the F-8E. Some F-8H had also the IRST removed.

Wikipedia entry about Ivan Kozhedub That story is also brought up in one of the Osprey AotA publications. Come to think of it, it's quite possible that something like this has happened. They didn't introduce invasion stripes just for fun...

Crusaders? (Planes and Skins)
Gocad replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
^ "No plan encounter with reality" Anyway, Osprey Publishing recently released this: ...which prompted me to take another look at those Sundowner skins I started working over a year ago needless to say, the same Osprey book convinced me to go back to the drawing board.... and while I am at it I might finish the Shamrocks skin I posted about as well. -

IR (or TV) imagery on HUD?
Gocad replied to squid's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I guess it's possible, since it's just a matter of positioning. But I don't think it would be that much of a good idea, since it would block your view and it's not essential either. It might be a different if you were actively steering your missile into the target(i.e. the AGM-12 Bullpup or TOW), but that's not modeled. -
Moved WOV F-8E to SFG, decals don't show up.
Gocad replied to Slant6's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
In the SF1 series all squadron specific decals for the stock aircraft are in the Decals folder and there is actually no need to change the decal.ini of the stock aircraft. All you need to do is copy the decals starting with F8 from WOV to SFG. Btw, the stock squadron decals are tied to the SQUADRONLIST.INI, not sure if there is a difference between the SFG and WOV sqdlist.
