WW1 Aviation History In Color - HD
vonOben replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Thanks for the links guys! Looks very interesting! I found out that "Blood in the Air" is actually a episode of the series "World War One In Colour" from 2007. World War I in Colour Release Date: 2007 Duration: 60 min Studio: Channel 5Narrated by: Kenneth Branagh World War I in Colour is a Channel 5 documentary (6 x 50-minute episodes) made with the cooperation of the Imperial War Museum, designed to make the Great War come alive for a 21st-century audience. The events of 1914-18 are authoritatively narrated by Kenneth Branagh, who presents the military and political overview, while interviews with historians add different perspectives. The human cost is conveyed by moving interviews with the now very elderly survivors, and by extracts from letters and memoirs. All aspects of the war, on land, sea and air are covered in separate programmes. In theory the series continues the heritage of ITV's The Second World War in Colour (1999) and Britain at War in Colour (2000), and with 75 per cent of the material never shown on television before there is every reason to watch. The crucial difference between this and the WWII programmes is that the Great War wasn't filmed in colour, and the footage has been computer colourised. The programme-makers argue the conflict itself was in colour--but however realistic the digital processing, it still feels inauthentic and historically a distortion. Worse still is their destroying the original compositions by cropping the top and bottom of the material to fit widescreen TVs. The result is a potentially excellent series badly presented, best watched with the colour turned off. Even then it cannot compete with the BBC's 26-part The Great War (1964), still one of the finest documentaries ever made. Hi guys Thanks a lot for those book recommendations! Any idea where to find those books? Cheers vonOben

Hi I read Goshawk Squadron about ten years ago, and I really liked it. I also prefer historical non-fictional books, but I don’t mind fictional novels if they are well written and seem credible. I have hard to find any books about German pilots though, so I would be grateful for some advice both for fictional and non-fictional books! Cheers vonOben

Thanks a lot Shiloh! I think it was this series I saw on TV as a child in the late 6o’s and which got me interested in WW1! The 26 episodes consist of 4 episodes of 10 min each so it’s about 17 hours total! I’ve now downloaded all episodes and joined them to their original 40 min length and started to watch them on TV. Great stuff! Cheers vonOben

Hi Herr Prop-Wasche I’ve enjoyed your earlier DM’s and this sound really good! Looking forward to the release! Thanks a lot for doing these improvements! S! vonOben -
Hi 33LIMA Here's something you perhaps want to test: Quote from Sim-Outhouse posted by rouge34rtw: "I pulled my cloud scale slider down from 10 to 6 in the configuration utility>texture info page (cloud slider still set to 5 for image quality) and it gained me about 15 to 20 FPS." Good luck! Cheers vonOben

What Side Do You Fly For and Why?
vonOben replied to Dave's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi I have never flown campaigns for any other nation than Geramany in OFF or in RB3D since 1999! My reasons are similiar to Shiloh's. There are something special about the German planes not only in WW1 but also in WW2.... Cheers vonOben -

Hi What program do you guys use to convert to dds with mipmaps? I've tested to resave a default CFS3 dds dxt3 terrain texture with alpha channel using DXTbmp. I've used the dxt3 file format since DXTbmp shows that the default terrain texture was in that format. The "new" dds file looks OK in DXTbmp, exactly the same as the original texture and also the alpha channel looks identical. When I check it in game it looks OK near the plane but further away the texture becomes very blurred. The original texture looked OK without blurriness. There are several settings in DXTbmp for mipmaps like "Use 16 bit dither", the drop downs with Box, Quadratic, Cubic, Catrom etc and also differnet scaling filters. In the test I used the default settings: I didn't check the '16bit dither' box. Selected 'box' Scaling filter selected 'none'. Which program or which settings in DXTbmp should be used for best quality CFS3 textures with mipmaps and alpha channel? Cheers vonOben

Need advice about dds with mipmaps

Need advice about dds with mipmaps
vonOben replied to vonOben's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi Olham I bought CFS3 only because of OFF, so I've never flown anything in CFS3 before. After about a year in OFF I took a break and wanted to try CFS3-ETO flying WW2 aircraft. Some more info from Martin Wright: "I have a sneaking feeling that imagetool does something special with the mipmaps that is optimised for FS/CFS. DXTBmp uses the nVidia DDS library to output textures. The Photoshop plugin uses the same libraries and I wouldn`t be surprised if the other programs also use code based on the nVidia library. I would expect all these methods to create very similar results I remember using the commandline options in imagetool and there is a flag you can set to specify that the output is to be used for terrain. My guess is that it sets something in the file that tells FS/CFS to switch mipmaps at a greater distance than normal so making it look slightly sharper for longer. Its not that the image data is any better just that it holds on to the higher mipmaps for longer. In the same way that aircraft can be made to look sharper by removing the mipmaps (so forcing the use of the full image at all distances) delaying the switch to the next mipmap will extend the distance before terrain switches to a smaller (blurrier) mipmap. On the other hand it is possible that the mipmap scaling algorithm used by imagetool is different to nVidia and creates mipmaps that are particularly optimised for terrain. The nVidia code is not FS-Specific as most games these days use DDS. There are options available in the plugin (and DXTBmp) to use different scaling algorithms and it may be worth experimenting with these to see if they make any difference in this situation. Or just use imagetool (for the final output at least)." The whole thread is here: http://pub9.bravenet...753640&cmd=show Cheers vonOben -
Need advice about dds with mipmaps

Hi Olham We’re all getting older…. jbsceneryV3 is a CFS3 scenery by johno_UK that was released in 2008 and is also included in the CFS3-ETO download. It only includes two seasons summer and winter and I’m editing it so will have more seasons. Here’s one screen shot of spring that is not on the SOH server: Cheers vonOben -
Need advice about dds with mipmaps
vonOben replied to vonOben's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi Olham Terrain tiles are the best way off checking the dds quality IMHO. And I want the best possible result for the terrain edits I’m working on for the new seasons for JBsceneryV3 / ETO: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?52159-Some-new-seasons-for-JBsceneryV3-ETO-preview Cheers vonOben -
Need advice about dds with mipmaps
vonOben replied to vonOben's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi I asked Martin Wright the creator of DXTBmp about the problem and he said: "It seems to be a common problem with mipmaps (in FS as well). I have a feeling that the nVidia library I use doesn`t give the same results as microsofts own imagetool. Resaved textures seem to switch mimaps differently from the original and switch in the smaller (more blurred) mipmaps too early. You could try experimenting with the different filter and scale settings but you may get the best results using imagetool. Or just do it without mipmaps." Now I have spent quite some time converting to dds with these programs and testing in CFS3: DXTBmp 4.00.82 DXTBmp 4.00.96 ImageTool CFS3 1.0.0.2 ImageTool FS2004 1.0.0.3 ImageTool FSX SP1 10.0.61355.0 ImageTool FSX SP2 10.0.61472.0 Gimp 2.6.11 Paint Net 3.5.8 Paint Shop Pro 7.02 Nvidia plugin 3.02 It’s only ImageTool 1.0.0.2 that makes terrain mipmaps as good as the original CFS3 terrain tiles, at least on my computer and I have an ATI videocard. It doesn’t matter if it’s dxt1 or dxt3 with or without alpha mask. In these pictures you can clearly se the difference. The picture shows default CFS3 city terrain tile that has been resaved without changes: Converted to dds with mipmaps using the Nvidia plugin Converted to dds with mipmaps using ImageTool 1.0.0.2. Hi I have an old TrackIR 2 that needs TIR Attack 1.6 to work with OFF or CFS3. I haven't used TackIR 2 much since there was a limited rear view, but now I found a registry fix that solved the problem. At least when I tested in IL-2. When I test in OFF and in CFS3 I only get errors in TIR Attack. I've tried to uninstall the TrackIR driver, tested another driver etc but it doesn't help. Suggestions to get TIR Attack to work again would be highly apreciated! Thanks! Cheers vonOben

How Handy is the JS Generic Mod Enabler?
vonOben replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
There are several ways of setting up JSGME, as described in the Help file. You can have one installation of JSGME, and make a shortcut for each game it’s to be used for and you simply change the shortcut properties "Start in" and "Run to" for that specific game, as described in the Help file. Or you can have several JSGME installations - one for each game. I’ve used the first alternative and it works excellent for CFS3/OFF if you place the mod folder as described above. Cheers vonOben -
How Handy is the JS Generic Mod Enabler?
vonOben replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi Lou I have my Mods folder in the same folder as I have my Over Flanders Fields folder, so just move it one step up in the folder system. I don’t know if it’s only dds files that CFS3 can find if they placed anywhere in any of the CFS3 folders. If the effects are dds files it’s no surprise that the effects are incorrect since they are found in the mods folder when the Mods folder is a subfolder in the OFF/MAW/CFS3 folder. Try moving your mods folder and see how it goes. Please note that you must add the top OFF/MAW/CFS3 folder name to your Mods folders when you move them one step up! Example: If you have a Game folder and in that folder you have: OFF, CFS3, MAW etc and here you create a "MAW Mods" folder, a "OFF Mods" folder and a "CFS3 Mods" folder for instance. The first folder in the "MAW Mods" folder is the name of the Mod. In this case for example "OFF-MAW Mod". The first subfolder in the "OFF-MAW Mod" should be MAW and the next subfolder for example "Aircraft" and so on. I hope you understand what I mean... Cheers vonOben -

I agree, but if you use JSGME with OFF and CFS3 it’s important to know about this: "Unlike other Flight Simulator versions CFS3 has no specific location for textures. They may be placed anywhere in any of the CFS3 folders and they will still be found and used." So if you want to use JSGME for DDS-files in OFF/CFS3 it’s advisable to have the Mods folder outside your OFF/CFS3 folder! Cheers vonOben -
Hi I’ve a break from OFF ATM but when I flew OFF I fly about 2-4 campaign missions a week, usually only one mission at the same day and I never use Warp. I only fly in QC when learning to fly new planes or practice. Cheers vonOben
