  1. I was testing out the new patch with WOE. I decided to take up Bongodriver's magnificent Typhoon to fly a little Air to Air. After getting 2 kills with missiles, and missing with the rest I was down to guns. Or so I thought.

I was in a furious dogfight with an Su-27...couldn't get a good bead on him (damn the new AI is harsh). Finally I good a perfect shot. I pull the trigger and...

    Nothing.

    Pull again...zip...nada...zilch.

My immediate thought was, "Oh my God, this model is so accurate, Bongodriver even removed the guns!!!"

I then checked the DATA file and realized I hadn't added the gun to the GUNDATA file.

    Oops.

But let this be a lesson to the MoD...FIGHTERS NEED GUNS!!!!!

  2. Yup BOB and BOB2 are wonderfully immersive sims. I remember rushing to the store to buy the first (back when you could still buy sims in retail stores). Been playing it and the sequel ever since.

The new AI is un-freakin-believable. And the campaigns have to be seen to be believed. The huge number of aircraft in a raid is staggering. You really get that "holy crap am I gonna get through this alive?" feeling. Nothing quite like flying into hundreds of bombers plinking at everything with a black cross on it, hoping to get out in one piece. And quite often, you won't.

You can't really compare BOB2 and Il-2. BOB has the better FM and AI, but Il-2 has the entire war to fight in. BOB is obviously limited to, well, the BoB!

 Graphics wise, it's a toss-up. BOB's clouds are much better IMHO, but I like the landscape in Il-2 better. That's just a personal opinion as the landscape in BOB is very detailed.

I like both, really...for different reasons.

  3. As I type this, I'm 100 yards from the arena where they are playing (I work at the country music hall of fame). I mistakenly decided to eat out for lunch. It took me 2 frickin' hours to get damn sandwich.

And no, I'm not a hockey fan... I just wanted to complain about the crowds...

  4. Not to get off subject, but where did they get the F-4Es? Or are they Fs for the Germans that were just painted in SEA for this occasion. Or maybe drones? Whichever, cool to see them!

Okay, looked at the full-size images...they're drones (I think).

  5. A nice little cross-over from flight sims and model building...

I use the BMP files from the Strike Fighters sims as masking templates. Find a scale drawing of the aircraft you're building and overlay the skins in photoshop till they are the same size. Now print them out on paper that is sticky on one side (called frisket paper I think), and cut them out. Stick 'em on the model and BAM instant mask. Sometimes this doesn't work depending on where the skins lie on the 3D model, but for wings and tails it generally works fine.

I also use the aircraft decal TGAs as real decals...just scale them and print them out in clear (or white, depending) decal paper. I work in 1/72, so in larger scales, small decal files my show jaggies if you scale them up.

  6. Is there anyway to make the waypoints have a lower altitude? I'm on a Tornado kick, and watching these guys bomb from 20K feet like B-52s is boring...I want some low-level rock and roll, man!

I can change the values in the altitude section of missioncontrol.ini, but then everyone has low altitude waypoints. Is there a way to change this for just bombers? I've also tried fiddling with the aircraftobject.ini with the AI bombing section, but it doesn't seem to work.

    Anyone have any leads?

  7. Well, I'm now embarking on a new endeavour for me. Scribing panel lines. I picked up the Revell 1/72 Tornado F.3 and was appalled at the panels. Recessed, but horrible and incorrect. And the fuselage is split in such a way that cleaning up the seam will destroy the lines anyway. Sooooo...I'm gonna try my hand and scribing. Always been amazed at the guys who re-scribe entire kits. I tried it a few times, but always screwed up. Gonna try a different technique this time. Called patience...
