FMs changed in new patches?
ShrikeHawk posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I took a break from SF2 for about a year. Before I took this break, I struggled flying the F-4. I read a lot and practiced a lot and still always ended up wallowing like a pig at 220Kts. I couldn't maneuver for a sidewinder shot on a mig-17 for nuthin'. I could only get them head on with a sparrow from range. Some slight FM tweaks was the only way I could handle the F-4. But after a year's break and a new computer, I installed the SF2 series with fresh new May2012 installers. Suddenly, me and the F-4 are buddies. I'm on the Mig-17s like white on rice, and the Mig-21s haven't got a chance. No FM tweaks necessary. I'm happy about it for sure, but I'm wondering what changed? Did the FMs get reworked a bit or did my brain do some ACM rewrites during my hiatus? -

Okies. Well, I'm definitely liking the F-4 now. Thanks Icarus. -

Installing weapons pack

Hey all - I'm embarassed to ask but here goes. I'm running SF2:V on Win7 and I'm trying to install ordnance shop II. I installed them here: C:\users\<usr>\Saved Games\Thirdwire\StrikeFighters2 Vietnam\Objects\Weapons I'm not seeing the new weapons at all. I tried using WeaponsEditor for SF2, but it's not generating a weapons.dat or weapons.ini. I'm new to Win7. So what am I doing wrong? -

Installing weapons pack

Okay. Looks good there. I have an a F-5C Skoshi Tiger (SF1) from an earlier computer. In the loadout.ini it clearly calls for the wing tanks [AirToAirLongRange] Loadout[01].WeaponType=AIM-9E-2 Loadout[01].Quantity=1 Loadout[02].WeaponType=AIM-9E-2 Loadout[02].Quantity=1 Loadout[03].WeaponType=AIM-9E-2 Loadout[03].Quantity=1 Loadout[04].WeaponType=AIM-9E-2 Loadout[04].Quantity=1 Loadout[05].WeaponType=F5C_TKW Loadout[05].Quantity=1 Loadout[06].WeaponType=F5C_TKW Loadout[06].Quantity=1 Loadout[07].WeaponType= Loadout[07].Quantity=1 And these tanks are present in the Fuel Tanks folder. So why aren't they appearing in-game? -
Installing weapons pack
ShrikeHawk replied to ShrikeHawk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I actually started off by installing to a folder on the desktop (I've never trusted auto install - and the Readme suggested as much). So I placed effects and sounds in the main directory. Incidentally, I notice I have a new IRgrowl so sounds seems to be correct. Weapons folder is in the Objects folder. Wrench, I've been out of the game for a while. Can you give me an example of a few non-default weapons? Like "F5WingTipTank" maybe? Tanks for the F-104? Edit: Perhaps another clue here: Should Drop Tanks be in their own separate folder? Or go in the Weapons folder? -
Is this still being used? Or is everyone just using Stary's shader tweaks? Can they be used at the same time?

Enbseries?
ShrikeHawk replied to ShrikeHawk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Yeah, it should be fine. It's an nVidia 550 Ti (2Gig). I've been out of the game for a while (thus questions about old stuff). Just got a new computer and am flexing my flying muscles again. -

Cool. So DX10 shaders are used by default in Win7? Or do I need to turn them on? -
Thicker, Fuller Clouds for FE

Thicker, Fuller Clouds for FE 07/30/07 by ShrikeHawk I felt that the default in FE looked too much like faded white blobs and not nearly enough like clouds. So I set about to change it. My intention here was to make more robust-looking clouds with a higher density and a greater "presence". I also wanted to create the more complex shapes that clouds can form. The kind that makes you lay in the grass and imagine what animal shape the cloud is. I increased the random factor for the clouds as well, so scattered clouds can be almost as dense as the default broken clouds and then again the clouds could be very sparse. So you never quite know what you're going to get. I like that better. I wanted to fix Inclement Clouds too. Realistic or not, I felt that it was too featureless and too muddy gray. I thought the cloudlayerbottom didn't match the stormy gray of the horizon clouds. So I created a new CLOUDLAYERBOTTOM5.bmp that I think fits the look of a stormy sky better. I have increased the particle count in the clouds a lot. This is a big reason for the thicker clouds. In defense of TK, I think he had the default clouds the way he did because it would keep the framerates high for most machines. This is a guess. I have not seen a framerate hit on my machine (2.80Ghz CPU, @750Mb RAM, GeForce 6800GT 256Mb VRAM), but it is possible that some machines may get an FPS degrade with this mod. Have fun! -
Cockpit sounds missing
ShrikeHawk posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
In my SF2:I installation the cockpit sounds are missing for many aircraft. Not all are affected. The spitfire from the upgrade, for instance, still has sound within the cockpit. External sound is just fine for all airplanes. I tried copying the JetEngine.wav sound into the mod folder. No change there. Does anyone know what would cause this? How can I fix it? -

Ah yes. Darwinism at work.

This reminds me of a Three Dog Night song, "Out in the Country." Here's some of the lyrics. Whenever I need to leave it all behind Or feel the need to get away I find a quiet place, far from the human race Out in the country Before the breathin' air is gone Before the sun is just a bright spot in the nighttime Out where the rivers like to run I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin' Whenever I feel them closing in on me Or need a bit of room to move When life becomes too fast, I find relief at last Out in the country

Can you copyright a country?

Tachyons are only theoretical. The theory hasn't been proven yet, but finding Neutrinos that move FTL (if all this proves to be correct) seems to be proof of Tachyons. I'm still not sure how you would "use" neutrinos or tachyons. I know there's people who are trying to build a "neutrino detector" but they're having big problems with that. Since neutrinos can pass through solid objects, that also means they pass through any detection system you can build. A difficult problem to solve.

Great work, Erik! Thanks much.

Maybe I'm the only one reading SciFi here, but I've heard about "Tachyons" for years. These are theoretical particles (from science, not a scifi book) that ONLY move faster than light. I'm surprised the article didn't mention them.
