Defecting Korean in Defective plane...
ShrikeHawk replied to Slartibartfast's topic in Military and General Aviation
Erwin - the vertical surface sticking up is obviously the vertical fin. When I said delta wing, I'm not referring to that. And when I say "delta main wing" I am NOT suggesting Mig-21s have true deltas like Mirages and Delta Daggers. I AM suggesting the main wing is "triangular" which is exactly what the term "delta" means. All Mig-21s AFAIK have a "triangular" main wing and horizontal stabilizers in a "conventional" configuration. If you review Brain32's pic above, the guy in the white hat is at the corner of the "delta main wing". He's almost touching it. The guy in all green is walking along side the port main wing. -
I've got a co-worker who's ex-Navy (RM). He knows I'm ex-Navy too (OS) so every now and then he sends a message with question, followed by, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot." hehe. Every now and then when he does something real well, I email him with "Bravo Zulu" or just "BZ" (great job!)

Easy. It's either a MiG-21MF or PFM. The thick dorsal spine totally gives it away. You can even see the delta main wing. Who are they kidding? Defective, my @ss...The only real question is: who shot it down during the escape? NK or China? -
I understand Israel's concerns about maintaining a qualitative technological edge in the region. They've been surrounded by enemies as long as they have existed. But times have changed. They don't have "quite" so many enemies now, or least countries that would openly attack them. A sale of F-15s to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait is not so threatening really. Saudi Arabia is not exactly a friend to Israel, but I don't think they have any intention of sticking their hand in the Israeli meat grinder again.

French warships for Russia to be armed with Ka-52 helicopters
ShrikeHawk replied to Erik's topic in CombatACE News
After the Berlin wall went down and Perestroika became the word of the day, I had hoped that Russia would become our friend. But they are not our friend. They are still licking their economic wounds from the stresses of the cold war. They are "consolidating their forces" and preparing to rise again when opportunity permits. -
Happy Birthday!

I thought it was terrific. I had a great time watching it. It was nothing like what I expected.

MiG-35 stalls in Indian fighter tender contract

You know the Gripen is an awesome airplane, but honestly, what are the odds that India will ever buy it? -
Sky Tiles in foreground
ShrikeHawk posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I wonder if this is related to terrain tiles appearing "through" the clouds. I reduced the mesh setting in flightengine.ini and that corrected a similar problem with the terrain. But even with that changed mesh setting enabled I still see this in the sky. Any idea why this happens? -

My bad. I thought it was. Am I significantly off target? -
Hmm... I almost wonder if this one shouldn't move into the Arena...

China and Pakistan Push Chengdu JF-17 Fighter for Export

I think the US is missing out on an opportunity. The Philippines formerly had good aircraft in the F-5B and F-8H. The low-cost F-20 would have been a fine solution for a lot of nations in need of combat aircraft. Unfortunately American politics completely got in the way of making money like it usually does and dropped the ball when we had a real money-maker in our hands. Now the Communist Chinese, who are proving to be better at Capitalism than Americans, are trying to cash in on a golden opportunity that we let slip away. What concerns me is that even though China has the lead on us in producing tee-shirts to coffee-makers, we always had the lead in high-ticket military solutions, but now I can see that slipping away too. The Philippines have been our friend for a long time. If they have to go elsewhere to find solutions because we ask too much, we may lose our friend. -

Always Overcast in Independance Campaign

I'm playing the War of Independence campaign addon for SF2:I. Every single mission I've played so far has overcast skies. Is that deliberate? -

Okay, this is everything that's in my IsraelME.ini file... [Terrain] TerrainFullName=Israel, Middle East DataFile=IsraelME_data.ini TargetFile=IsraelME_targets.ini TargetTypeFile=IsraelME_types.ini MovementFile=IsraelME_movement.ini NationsFile=IsraelME_nations.ini BriefingText=IsraelME_briefing.ini DogfightFile=IsraelME_dogfight.ini DogfightOnly=FALSE Longitude=34.80 Latitude=32.08 LimitedNations=TRUE GroundObjectTexture=tan [Map] FilenameFormat=IsraelME_Map%d.bmp Width=1000000.0 Height=1000000.0 NumZoomLevels=3 [WeatherChance] ScatteredChance=45 BrokenChance=30 OvercastChance=10 InclementChance=5 [AllowedDates] StartDate=1947 EndDate=2050 I changed the WeatherChance values to what you see from this in the original... [WeatherChance] ScatteredChance=25 BrokenChance=25 OvercastChance=4 InclementChance=2 Why am I still only seeing Overcast in the campaign? Any ideas? -

Actually, I do think of it as between the two airplanes. If the Philippines can't afford the F-16, why not go after the Mirage 2000? It was offered to them, I believe, and it's combat tested. The Mig-29 is also an excellent aircraft but I wonder if it's also outside of the Filipino price range. I also agree that the Philippines are mostly likely to engage in defensive operations. I don't see them attacking anyone soon. But if they are placed into battle, and defending themselves, who are they most likely to be fighting against? And what are the offensive strengths of their most likely foes? They should purchase with that thought in mind. -

I'm surprised to see the Philippines on that list. I thought they only operated western hardware. Curious selling point of "performance-to-cost ratio." As in, "It's really no match for the Mig-29, F-15, F-16, F-18, but it costs a lot less than any of those." -
I can see why Israel is a little concerned. It looks like Lebanon is trying to spot tanks and then kill them, like they're expecting to fight someone with a lot of tanks. Could be Syria of course, but Israel has a lot of tanks. And this after that strange clash over a tree at the border...

Sky Tiles in foreground
ShrikeHawk replied to ShrikeHawk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Got this figured out. Turns out, if you are trying to show significant 3D-clouds, you cannot eliminate this effect in overcast — only in overcast skies. Default settings in SF2:Israel almost eliminate 3D-Clouds completely. That's the default workaround. But you CAN cut it out 99% of the time. Above 3000ft AGL, you'll never see it and below 3000ft I got it to where it's extremely rare, not even seen unless you look in the right direction at the right second. The answer wasn't the obvious one. Minimum design requirements pushed the envelope too hard for basic solutions. It's a combination of several different settings. Thanks for trying anyway, Fubar. Here's the result...
