Anti Aircraft Laser unveiled at Farnborough
ShrikeHawk replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in Military and General Aviation
This is good development and I laud the developers, but this still isn't viable against manned aircraft. It's a popular misconception that as soon as a laser touches something it "instantly" explodes. It doesn't work like that. It has to stay on target for a period of time in order to super-heat the target. In the video, the laser is held in position for about seven seconds on the drone while flying straight and level. A manned aircraft would never let that happen. The pilot, if he wasn't already maneuvering, would feel the heat and pull some violent evasions to get away from the beam. When the developers can get the beam so powerful it only needs to be held on target for ONE second, instead of the current seven, then you'll have something really dangerous. -
Anti Aircraft Laser unveiled at Farnborough

impressive display, but then again...not. How effective would this laser be against a maneuvering aircraft? Not very, I imagine. It could be good against Katyushkas and Scuds, but a manned aircraft simply won't fly straight and level long enough for the heat to build up. -
If the F-22 pilot let the Su-35 WVR, then he's already made a rookie mistake. The F-22 should be ghost. All the enemy ever sees of it is its missile boring in for the kill.

Another "I survived" series. I think my reflexes must be gettin' slow... -
Personally, I thought the title game was great. It wasn't high-scoring but that's because both sides fought so hard. Each goalie played a terrific game. Neither had a serious brain-fart like I had seen in many other games. Both teams were physical and aggressive. It seems clear to me that both sides wanted to win. I agree to a certain lack of elegance in the play, but at that level there isn't time to look good. You just gotta win, baby. The Spaniards did it. The Dutch proved a worthy opponent. Congrats Spain!

Terrain/Sky Oddness
ShrikeHawk posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I'm trying to understand what causes this effect in SF2:I in the screenshot below. I only see it when at altitide 12K or higher. It comes and goes, appearing as the plane moves or the angle of view changes. It seems to happen only when looking through the clouds at a certain angle, roughly 45 degrees. This occurs after modding environmentsystem.ini. I took a default one and only modded broken clouds, nothing else, with the following: [CloudsBroken] MaxClouds=100 MaxCloudParticles=64 3DCloudMaterial=CloudMaterial 3DCloudHorizontalSize=4500.0 3DCloudVerticalSize=1500.0 3DCloudSizeDeviation=0.3 3DCloudParticleDensity=2.6 ParticleSize=440.0 ParticleSizeDeviation=0.3 MinBaseAltitude=600.0 MaxBaseAltitude=2900.0 UseBottomRow=TRUE MaxVisibleFactor=0.6 Transparency=0.9 The very low MinBaseAltitude (600) may appear to be the cause at first glance but even when I put the value at 2000 I get the same effect. I suspect the high 3DCloudParticleDensity value might be the cause but I don't understand how it could. Even if so, I hope there is a workaround because I prefer I far higher 3DCloudParticleDensity than the one I have here. Anyone have any ideas? -

Hey Stary - Is this in the flightengine.ini as Icarus suggested? -

She brought me home... I lost my whole flight, got hit bad and lost all roll authority. I took out the rest of the enemy while fighting them below 2K. Thought I was dead for sure! -
The article seems to suggest the "implied threat" is directed at China. I don't think so; it's directed at North Korea.

Okay - What are those? Where do I get them?

I think it's a great idea. I was thinking about something similar. You'd have to maintain food points to stay alive, so you'd have to eat grubs. You'd get water from the dew on plants. If your radio started up within earshot of the enemy, you'd be in big trouble. You could contact BAT-21 in a Skymaster or call on Sandy's to strike forces near your position. Could be lots of fun.

hehehe. That's funny!
