Getting Cloudy

Thanks Panama, I did all the development in WoV, so I'm trying it out in the other sims to see how it looks. -
Getting Cloudy
ShrikeHawk replied to ShrikeHawk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks guys. hehe. They don't always look like that in the Inclement setting, but obviously they can. I just thought that shot was picturesque. I honestly don't know how the FPS is affected. My rig is fairly new but I've never gotten "great" framrates with it. I normally get 25-35 FPS, and while using these clouds I don't see a change. When I took Screen 5, I had 54 FPS at that moment. The environmentsystem.ini is modded from the new widesky which I understand can affect framerates. I removed a couple lines about shadows which, I believe, may cause the framerate drop. Once removed they don't seem to degrade the look of the clouds. I also use far fewer cloud particles and will definitely improve the FPS. I'd love it if anyone would test it out to see if their FPS is affected. Storm, I'd like to hear if these work for you. Here's a sample of just one set of clouds. Panamared - Very cool that you figured out the trick too. I haven't tried your mod "yet" since I haven't flown FE for a while...but I will definitely get it. I'm only using three out of the possible five because I use the same cloud in broken as overcast. The handling in overcast brings out highlights in the image that broken doesn't, so it looks different anyway. I also have never gotten any clouds to in the "clear" setting, so I didn't bother with a new image. If you know how to make them show up, I'd like to hear about it. Cheers! -

Great job! That was fun. -

Totally understood. It's also important that the modder knows his work is appreciated and desired. It's a powerful impetus for what is often difficult work that's done for free. -
Modders: What Do You Concentrate On?
ShrikeHawk replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm focused in on 3D Clouds (read: obsessed). A few FM mods here and there (Now my F4J cannot be out-turned by a C5 loaded with M1A1s). I did a few skins for FE a while back, but the skinners for the modern sims seem to have that covered here. -

Nice Phantom shots, mikepie! I like the 3rd one most, where you're banking into the clouds. -

Decided to keep my drop tank and brought it home. On approach after a vicious dogfight with some very well-flown Mig-17s. -

Problems with green hell 2
ShrikeHawk replied to hawk2009's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hey Hawk, Take a look at the suggestions in the link below. I had to use all of them to cure the same problem on my system. You may have to play with the settings a bit. I did, and now green hell 2 works just fine. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=32500 -

Oooooooh, this should stir some interesting responses...

I wonder how hard it would be to start up Northrop's F-20 manufacturing plant. There was a very capable fighter available for a great price. It would be a great stop-gap machine while waiting for the F-35. Too bad the F-20 got swept under the rug. I think it could've had a great combat record. -

I'm wondering why the USAF is faced with this problem. I mean the F-4, C-130, B-52 (and many others) have been in service for ages. They've had to go through substantial overhauls to maintain that service life, but it's possible and has proven to be cost-effective. So why can't the same be done now? The cost of re-training the USAF & ANG pilots for the F-18 or EF-2000 and then having to do it all again when the F-35 becomes available would be huge. Better to buy more of the perfectly capable F-16 or at least refurbish the existing fleet. -
Mig-17 maneuverability and FM

...Or just place it here in the thread if you'd prefer to have some beta-testers before posting it. I'd love to try your FM out. -
Mig-17 maneuverability and FM
ShrikeHawk replied to guyran's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hmmm. I found the 17F FM, but not the 17A one. There was a pack of Fresco_Farmer upgrades by Wrench that included several people's work. Does this include yours? -
Mig-17 maneuverability and FM
ShrikeHawk replied to guyran's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hey Fubar - If you've made a new FM for the Mig-17F, how hard would it be to modify just the regular Mig-17? What is the difference between the two? So if I switch out the 17F's FM , I would like the the base 17 version to be similar. -

Got mad at my Wingman during this one. He kept refusing to engage my target! I don't know what he was busy with. There were no other targets in the sky! He's conspicuously missing here. Probably knows I'm pissed at him. -
Higher Turn rate... how to ?
ShrikeHawk replied to Dagger1's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'll respond since no one else has so far. If this is the same mig-21 used in the Gen 1 WoX sims, then I wouldn't touch it. I think it turns very well. Fly with it's strengths in mind and you'll have a very deadly bird in your hands. That said... I'm sure others will have better ideas, but you could try reducing the stall speed towards the top of the .ini file. -

Just after getting an 8th kill in the mission. My guns jammed during that final shot, but it was enough. -
To Drop External Tanks, or Not?
ShrikeHawk replied to Oswald Bastable's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I drop tanks as soon as I sight the enemy or get a call from red crown that bogies are in the area. Drop tanks significantly affect your maneuvering. If you think you'll need to maneuver, you should drop them. I also drop before entering a bombing run. I doubt the game models this, but it just seems foolish to be toting around huge gas tanks with flak going off everywhere around you. A single hot piece of shrapnel could end your mission with a real bang... -
