  1. Seismic Activity

Yeah, I know that ice takes up more space than the water from which it's converted from. Hence why you shouldn't put glass bottles in the freezer for too long unless you intend to retrieve them shattered. Oh, but if an ice age should occur I wouldn't be too worried. So far according to geological data all the ice ages have stopped their freezing effect at the Pyrenees, and between that and my country there's still Spain, so I can remain cozily where I am... @ Capitaine Vengeur: Of course one would have to turn to modern submarine technology for that. I'm no expert but besides air regeneration I think there's also electrolysis possible to gain oxygen from water. Of course that requires a massive amount of energy but the ideal powerplant for an underwater floating city would be a nuclear fusion plant. The light of that could even be distributed through light tubes to provide illumination. But acknowledging JediMaster's comment, it should indeed be semi-submersible (when the sea is calm and the weather good, why not go for a swim? ). And whilst we're at it, the top should be covered in solar panels, just as backups, with batteries for storage capacity...
  2. Seismic Activity

I've read the answer to that question somewheres where a certain law of physics mandated that something warm be larger than something cold - I don't mean freezing, just something cold. Therefore, according to that law, all the ocean water, if the temperature would rise as a whole, would occupy more space rather than the cold water. Wether it'd be that much more to reach above the level taking into account the presence of floating ice exerting pressure on the water surface is another question though...
  3. Seismic Activity

Now another shake, 6.1 Richter, near Port-Au-Prince (capital of Haiti)... If things continue that way then I think that plans should be made for massive underwater cities that float around... I mean, just think of it - over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water bodies - probably even more so when the ice caps melt. It would actually mean us being protected from the elements - earthquakes wouldn't affect us, and seaquakes wouldn't affect much either because Tsunamis weren't a worry either. The only thing that could possibly affect it were volcanic eruptions but if they were kept mobile they could avoid even that. The only thing that could happen were meteorites or asteroids... but that would be very bad luck... Summing it up, it's like babies in the womb, protected by the amiotic fluid...
  4. Seismic Activity

It may be unsinkable, but that doesn't mean it doesn't shake as well - at least in the coastal regions it does... thinking of Portugal, Italy and Greece...
  5. Animal Rights Activists (SO FUNNY!)

  6. Seismic Activity

Well, over here we've been having some as well, a couple of weeks ago we had a 6.0er 100km WSW off the SW tip of continental Portugal (some 265km away from where I live). Taking into account what happened in 1755 we have a habit of getting nervous since it was the biggest quake we felt in 40 years. I didn't feel it but I heard it (that's because part of my house stands on the edge of a natural cave tunnel system) and I was in the basement at the time when it happened. We're glad for every little one because that relieves tension and prevents a bigger one... I think... Edit: Come think of it, 2012 isn't that far away... *puts tinfoil hat on*
  7. Mechwarrior 3

Just wait till MW4 and all the rest will be available then you won't miss out a thing of MW4. I for one am going to skip it and go right to AT1:BT (but not atm since it's waaay too buggy) or just wait till MW 3015 comes out...
  8. Mechwarrior 3

Last time I played it was when I still had Win2k Pro as my OS... sadly, haven't been able to get it running in high-rez under WinXP so haven't fired it up in a while... but yeah, MW3Gold rawks... haven't even tried MW4, didn't like the limitations in terms of customization they put in that one... plus that rigid aimpoint was argument enough for me not to try it... nah, I stick to MW3, and hope that Assault Tech 1: Battletech (a remake of MW2) comes along nicely so I can play MW again nicely and with high-rez... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNBXxDiQ86o
  9. F-35 Production to be Cut

Reminds me of that famous scene from the movie "Independence Day", when President Whitmore enters Area 51... President Thomas Whitmore: I don't understand, where does all this come from? How do you get funding for something like this? Julius Levinson: You don't actually think they spend $20,000.00 on a hammer, $30,000.00 on a toilet seat do you?
  10. Wing Commander or X-Wing

I must lamely admit that I haven't played either, though I DID try the Tie Fighter Demo. If I had the chance to own one of the games it'd definitely have been Tie Fighter though... Empire FTW! But my space glory time is 100% devoted to a rather minor game with tiny ships called Descent: Freespace - The Great War, as well as it's totally un-epic sequel, Freespace 2. Note that I'm being heavily ironic. If there's one thing that has ever impressed me more than the imperial firepower then it was the gargantuan designs crossing the vacuum of space found in Freespace and Freespace 2. I wish I'd played it in multiplayer but still, every now and then, I put it back on my HD and give in to my space cadet lusts...
  11. AVATAR RULES !

Why did it had to? She had a bone to pick with the colonel I guess, that's why she "changed sides". The way she died in the movie made her biggest contribution just the salvation of the scientist crew, not the final battle itself - a somewhat ingratiating death, just to die from damage without accomplishing much... It would have made a much more significant death if she'd taken anything worthwhile - then again, if she'd taken down the colonel's plane, the ending would've had to be different I guess... having her take out the bomber then would've actually fit the plot nicely. The way it was though the hero got all the glory, whithout sharing - except for his wife... uncool IMHO.
  12. AVATAR RULES !

I thought the military guy WAS the solution, or did I get the movie wrong? If you want the purely military guys to be the solution though you'll have to travel back in time to Rambo 3 I guess - they don't make 'em like that anymore. Plot-wise there was nothing surprising to see, but visually, I must say the blend between real footage and CGI was perfect. If there was one thing that I'd have to pick on as a downer was Rodriguez not doing a suicidal run on the Colonel's plane - since she HAD come to grips that she wouldn't survive the encounter already, IIRC... So thumbs down for her, since going down "fangs-out in-your-face-suicidal-run" is IMHO cooler and more heroic+dramatic than what happened in the movie. Kudos for the Hellfire & Sidewinder though.
  13. Other Games You Really Got Into

I totally got into Flashpoint as well, started off with the Gold edition, bought the czech edition of Resistance and bought the GOTY edition as well... it is probably the game which I most like from all I've played so far in terms of it being just the way I want it - because it can be whatever you want it to be, thanks to the endless modding possibilities. I still prefer it over ArmA - and I didn't even get ArmA 2 due to the former's disappointment... Behind me admittedly lies far too much time of Counterstrike (5 years from beta 5 to 1.5, Steam stopped me since my computer failed to like it although I had 100% legal software so I hate Valve ever since), but now that my first white hairs are showing I play less FPS (though I've kept on-track with RTCW, Far Cry and ETQW, the latter one still is on my HD along with CoD: UO). Lately though I've been more committed to MMORPGs though, Anarchy Online being my main drug, after a stint in Project Entropia, and I've reluctantly joined WoW, but I don't plan on spending much time there since it's expensive (I'm a fr00b in AO though I indulged into some luxuries). In terms of simming I remember getting up a 6AM on saturdays and sundays just to play Aces over the Pacific and later Aces over Europe on my dad's PC before I had my own. When I then got my hands on my very own 286, which was slower than my dad's PC, I got more into F-19 and A-10. Later on, Jane's Anthology satisfied my aviation wishes - and if there's one sim I'm sorry I've never played was Jane's WWII Fighters. With regards to meching, I played the MW2 demo, but waited until MW2 Mercenaries to really start stomping around in heavy tonnage. After that came Heavy Gear and finally MW3 Gold. Didn't like MW4 due to it's restrictiveness, though I'm definitely looking forward to AT1:BT and Mechwarrior 3015...
  14. The Past Decade

Is that supposed to be a basket-case or some sort of allegory to Noah's Ark, Fates? The Good: Combatace and Wings over Europe (Yay! Finally something to replace Jane's Fighter's Anthology!!!). Ending up with a nice rig but curiously running older games (nope, I haven't upgraded to the latest series of TK's sim cause I like MP!) and Broadband Interwebz connection - no more POTS expenses! Going through college and all the mad experiences (including the Euro cup in '04 in my country, although we didn't win). Having had my first White Christmas in Prague back in '03 and visited other places as well (Paris, France also in '03 and Nordeste of Brazil in '04). Many (classified!) naughty things The Bad: Family Break-up (parental divorce and my sister went to study and work in Germany). Being stuck in a less-than-ideal job (WTB Lottery-winning ticket!). The Ugly: Having gone through my first long-term relationship - but being the one who ended it. Let's see how my current one goes... Knowing that the world will end in 2012 before the aforementioned date - and wondering if it really would be such a bad thing since Heaven supposedly is a nice place to be and should allow us to continue with the divinal CA and TK software, nice rigs and fast connection speeds, etc... Hmmm, I think that's about it... Merry Christmas for all!!
  15. Funny Christmas songs

Jeff Dunham ftw - definitely one the best that's popped up recently... Achmed and Walter are my favs...
  16. Cert Ride Passed

Gratz!!! Sux about the holiday things though...
  17. New UAV seen at Kandahar

Kinda reminds me of the Go-229... only I bet this model has the benefit of fly-by-wire...
  18. I DONT CARE! ABOUT TIGER WOODS

Tiger Woods: How to introduce a new club (the Boner!) to go clubbing in unknown holes...
  19. Humor Check

Talk about leaving N1234 for the "punch"-line... Great post, Typhoid!!!
  20. A beer to end all beers for SAC

Don't they forbid alcohol consumption? That'd either be an insult or a perfect excuse for them to start killing each other because of "unholy consumption"
  21. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/17/hellads_phase_iv_contracts/ And with this on the horizon, I hope we'll get the Tie-Fighters armed and ready - in the standard "two weeks" time!
  22. Sounds strange, smells bad, but tastes goooood !

Well, I must say that I'm not a fan of the strange smelly cheeses, but the queijo de Azeitão and Serra da Estrela are "delicatessen" in their own right. As for wines, I can only reinforce what CarlosemoG said - we DO have world-class wines. In fact, our wines are famous since the times of the roman empire and we even go so far as to state in our LAWS that wine without a certain percentage of alcohol is not allowed to be designated as wine (since with all the drinking restrictions for drivers in place we have recently begun producing several "de-alcoholized" wines which the portuguese government refuses to allow to be classified as such)...
  23. Marine Stake-out in Afghanistan

What do you mean with rolled up snap like that? They're still there!!! I was anything but impressed - guess one military doesn't learn from another's mistake. Everybody this side of the iron curtain was smirking I bet back in the end of the eighties when the sovs pulled out of Afghanistan, saying it was their Vietnam. Now NATO is stuck in that hell-hole... And I bet the russians aren't smiling about this blunder... those that were there must be wondering what will be considered a "victory" that would enable foreign forces to leave that country, since Hillary Clinton already stated that the U.S. aren't planning on staying there forever - and I bet they'll be the last to leave. IF the little red button HAD been pushed, not one more single american life would've been lost there- simply because those unlucky to have survived the nuclear deluge wouldn't be in any condition to fight, I guess...
  24. shows how i pay no attention at all !

I think that name is totally you!
