Red Flag was and is a great flick, with some of the best flying sequences ever filmed. It's even more amazing when one takes into consideration that it was a made for TV-movie from 1980. Most TV movies from that era were so bad, they'd make a hard-core Syfy channel addict cringe.

Jet fuel Vs Diesel Vs Gasoline - how they burn..........
Fubar512 replied to MigBuster's topic in The Pub
I fondly recall driving to a small local airport during the early 1980s, and purchasing 5 gallons of leaded avgas to use in my high-compression muscle car during late 1979 and early 1980, when they stopped producing leaded premium (and before the advent of unleaded premium). 5 gallons of 105-octane avgas mixed with 10 gallons of 87 octane unleaded used to produce a 95+ octane fuel, one that had just enough lead content to lubricate the exhaust valves on my 1970 AMX. It also had the benefit of having enough octane to satisfy that cars 10,5:1 compression ratio engine, without resorting to shortening the ignition advance curve. Of course, this was in the days before electronic engine controls... And, Kerosene, diesel, and jet fuel burn quite nicely when the volume of air exceeds the volume of fuel. Try laying some down on the pavement, and lighting it with an intense flame, and you'll see what I mean. I am all too familiar with the combustion properties of diesel fuel. Also, "Jet-A" burns quite well in a diesel engine, though it lacks the lubricating properties of diesel fuel, so you may score your injectors if you run it for too long a period "straight" from the pump. Mixing in a few gallons of diesel, or even a few quarts of castor oil, helps. -

"Maverick" would be the oldest Commander in the USN by now, and more likely would have either been riffed, or would have at least made Rear-Admiral. After all, he was a full Lieutenant 29 years ago! -
Hacking avionics, will be legal?
Fubar512 replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Both have be done, Raven. The executable runs a CRC (cyclic redundancy check) of the various DLL files when they attempt to load. Anything that's determined to be out of place will cause the EXE file to reject the DLL, and crash the game back onto the desktop. Here's a brief explanation of the process on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_redundancy_check -

Fubar512 replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
That's right. He will not be arrested. He will simply be marched outside and shot at sunrise, by members of the investigative division of the people's flight simulation compliance authority highway patrol. -

Fubar512 replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Don't do it! Otherwise, the simulation division of the avionics police will seek you out and arrest you, and you will most likely be prosecuted for illegal patching. -

They are outdated and fairly unreliable. You would be better off with an SSD.

Black Screen when loading mission - Still can't solve it.
Fubar512 replied to Eagle114th's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
In the past, TK has stated that the series does not support SLI or Crossfire. Try going to single card mode in your graphics control panel, and see if that fixes it. -

Sound should have absolutely nothing to do with that. Did you update your graphics card drivers? Is your DirectX updated? -
Normal or Hard FM?
Fubar512 replied to 76.IAP-Blackbird's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
The AI always uses a "hybrid" normal flight mode, some aspects of which are similar to the player's easy mode,. I've seen AI birds perform maneuvers and exceed limits beyond what the player can do in that same aircraft. -

Great work Blackbird! And Wilches, I don't give a flying f#ck how long it takes one to produce a model, especially if it means choosing between quality, which takes time, or mediocrity, which is all too common.- 471 replies

Taxing Your System
Fubar512 replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Try all that in conjunction with Eric's F-18s. If you are able to maintain a nice, playable frame rate, then all is well. Of course, don't tell the IRS...... -
Normal or Hard FM?
Fubar512 replied to 76.IAP-Blackbird's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
A properly configured FM would be best flown in hard mode. The issue is, that this had become a moving target, due to how TK decided that stalls (and stall recovery) should be handled, in later patches. In short, FMs penned up since the last patch release are generally OK. Earlier ones often exhibit weird behavior at the point of stall, and also, post-stall. -

Novalogic's F-16MRF & MiG-29 both date back to 1998. Had a lot of fun with those, on my old Celeron 300A@450 / Voodoo Banshee system. I believe that Novalogic's F-22 came out in 2000, and it's main advantage was that it ran under both Glide and DirectX (MiG-29 and F-16 were Glide only). There are some decent Glide wrappers available that will allow one to run the two earlier titles with 3D acceleration. Unfortunately, I think that both games are limited to either 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution. Anyway, the scripted missions were just OK, multiplayer through "Nova World" was smooth, albeit boring, as these were really games and not sims by any stretch of imagination. I still have all 3 games sitting on a shelf.
