I took part in a mass OS-refresh project where Windows XP was being rolled out on 3000+ workstations at a major business campus, back in the late Winter-Early Spring of 2002. We had a Micro Soft rep onsite, and I recall him predicting that "We'll still be supporting XP well into the next decade". Amazingly, he was right on the money.

New Style Vietnam war
Fubar512 replied to Gulfwarfighter's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
Su-27s and MiG-29s would not have been in front line service until late 1984 at the earliest, and Soviet AAMs of the era (early-mid 1980s) were not in the same league as their western counterparts. And that's before we even get to the subject of radars and ECM. If the Soviets had moved one of their Kiev-class carriers into the area, what would it have accomplished? As an ASW platform, it may have been of some use, but its air wing of Yak-38s would have provided target practice, at best. Tu-22m bombers would have been cause for concern, with their ASMs...but moving them to them to front line airbases in Vietnam would have exposed them to attack from sub-launched TLAMs. A more likely scenario was once envisioned by Tom Clancy (in his non-fiction book, "Fighter Wing"), and that is of a counter revolution taking place, where Ho-Chi Min city (Saigon) and the surrounding region secedes from Vietnam, and the US intervenes on behalf of the "new" Saigon government. -

Unable to Supercruise?
Fubar512 replied to tacoscent's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
CLa = Coefficient of lift by alpha state. Thus, the CLaMachTable represents how Cla is effected by Mach level. This should be left alone, as it doesn't effect a model in level flight. CD0 = Coefficient of drag in level flight at zero lift. CD0MachTable represents how that value is effected by Mach level. -

A more demanding (and accurate) flight dynamics model, that applies predetermined global parameters to flight models that lack the appropriate tables and data entries. -
New Style Vietnam war
Fubar512 replied to Gulfwarfighter's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
Interesting scenario, but keep in mind that: During the late 1970s through the 1980s, China and the US supposedly had an "unofficial" mutual defense agreement in place, an agreement that either would defend the other in case of an attack by the Soviet Union. The PRC and the USSR had fought a limited border war against one another during 1969. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Soviet_border_conflict ) In 1979, China and Vietnam fought a limited war against one another (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Vietnamese_War ) I'm sure that they were not exactly the best of friends in 1983. What I am trying to say is that China would have been more likely to attack Vietnam, a Soviet ally, then to have cooperated with either for an attack against the Philippines, a US ally. -
Germany terrain rework (Wip)

Stary had two different TOD sets, with two different tree heights. -

All trees on all tiles appear over-sized, and yes, this is a clean install in its own terrain folder. Just fly a ground support mission and view the ground units (targets). You need to reduce tree heights by 70-75% to get them proportionately correct. -

I do have one minor issue to report: The trees are waaaaaay out of scale compared to ground objects. They look as if they're 70-80 meters tall! -

Superb! It is resource intensive, but one must expect that with this series and that level of detail. -
Kayaker goes for Nantucket sleigh ride off of Florida

With the emphasis on catch-and-release, that's usually not an issue. -

Off of the Kona coast (in Hawaii), they fish from kayaks in several thousand feet of water....and often hook and catch tuna, marlin, and big Mahi. -
Drag Chute on Fishbeds?
Fubar512 replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
No braking effect? I have set them up as air brakes with correspondingly large drag areas before, albeit ones that use the "deploy when on gears" parameter. So yes, they do slow the aircraft down, when setup as air brakes. -

Fubar512 replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Ravenclaw, that may have been possible in SF1, but not in SF2, as one cannot deploy a weapon when the aircraft is on its gears. Try it. -

Fubar512 replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
A weapon that fires when the aircraft is on its landing gear? When was the last time you tried firing a weapon (in this series) that way? Sorry to bust your bubble, but it doesn't work like that. A drag chute has to be part of the 3D model, and it really needs to be setup as an animated surface, preferably an air brake, so that it actually works as intended. -

Fubar512 replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
And if there were one made that way. how would one trigger it? The fake pilot method is meant for adding fixed, non-animated bits to an existing aircraft model. -
Engine Smoke Massive FPS Loss
Fubar512 replied to Slushie's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
That 800 is in KPH. And, it appears that Paulo is using some of the same parameters that I used in the MiG-15 FM that I penned up for the KAW mod, so it is not an issue, it is there by design. -
Engine Smoke Massive FPS Loss
Fubar512 replied to Slushie's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Does this occur over a certain airspeed? The MiG-15, MiG-17, and the F-86 all suffered from wing warp, which would cause the aircraft to roll into the effected wing surface. In the case of the F-86, this generally occurred above 675 MPH at low altitude, on the MiGs, it occurred anywhere from 400-485 knots. -
Julhelm's Container Ship
Fubar512 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
File Name: Julhelm's Container Ship File Submitter: Fubar512 File Submitted: 19 March 2014 File Category: Cargo and Transports Julhelm's Container Ship for SF2 Model and Textures: Julhelm Effects and .ini work: Fubar512 This mod is designed and optimized for the SF2 series, and may not work properly in SF1. To install: Simply extract the contents of the 7z archive file into the mod (saved games) folder of the desired title. For example, using SF2NA, the default path would be "YOUR NAME/Saved Games/Thirdwire/StrikeFighters2NorthAtlantic" Note that model's running lights will be on all the time. This is currently due to the limitations of the series. To enable the included sounds, you must have access to the soundlist.ini, which can be extracted from the flightdata, cat file. It must then be placed into your game's flight folder, and the following edits should be made to it (note, if you have a custom soundlist.ini already, simply add the following lines in their appropriate numerical order. Don't forget to edit the XXX entries to match your existing sequence). SoundFileXXX=Underway SoundFileXXX=MarineDiesel [underway] Priority=Normal 3DSound=TRUE DopplerEffect=TRUE Looped=TRUE NumBuffers=2 MaxDist=250.000000 MinDist=10.000000 InsideConeAngle=360 OutsideConeAngle=360 ConeOutsideVolume=0 [MarineDiesel] Priority=LOW 3DSound=TRUE DopplerEffect=TRUE Looped=TRUE NumBuffers=2 MaxDist=250.000000 MinDist=10.000000 InsideConeAngle=360 OutsideConeAngle=360 ConeOutsideVolume=0 Click here to download this file -
AI Radar by the 1980s had become sophisticated enough to ID bogies by their signature (and reportedly, even by their turbine blade count). So, the Vietnam scenario would most likely not have applied there. On the other side of the equation, the AA-10/R-27 Alamo missiles carried by the Su-27 during that time frame were as accurate as an AIM-7 sparrow, and had a greater range.

Julhelm's Container Ship

You'd have to speak to Julhelm regarding that issue, as he is the one who built the 3D model.
