If you got the money buy rudder pedals. I am using my SimPed pedals since 14 years. No wear at all. They are working like on the first day. I never would go without pedals anymore.

Thanks, Womenfly, Mikael Carlson is on my 'watchlist' but I missed this one apparently. -
Comments on the Fokker Dr I?
Gremlin_WoH replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Here is my review of P3. In the Flight Model section I am talking a little bit about the Dr.I FM. I have talked to Womenfly about the Dr.I as she has flown a real replica. You should talk to her. Fact is: a flat turn can not be modelled by the game engine and that is the most missing feature of any W.W.I flight sim. This would give a Dr.I pilot a huge advantage in dogfight and he could hold his own even against newer types of planes. -

Hey Panama Red, where have you been hiding all the time? Welcome, I think a lot of the old timers here will remember you. Btw, nice tip. Cheers Gremlin -
My review of Over Flanders Fields is finally done. I had aimed for a mid February release but thanks to a constant stream of patches I had to play catch up with the devs and after each patch I needed to test and re-test as well as to write and re-write parts of the review. Now that the situation has calmed down I finally managed it ... phew Read it here or not ... Cheers Gremlin

Slightly OT: E8400 proc. setup - Parky ?
Gremlin_WoH replied to Wels's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
My 9800GTX 512MB works well. Nowadays there is the improved variant 9800GTX+ 512MB or 1024MB and a re-labeled type Nvidia called GTS250 (just another badge on it). You could go for the GTS250 with 1024 MB video memory which should give you a good boost especially in OFF with lots of textures. You can get one as cheap as 140 Euro. As stated before it is a re-labeled 9800GTX+. Examples: Sparkle GTS250 Palit GTS250 Cheers -
Slightly OT: E8400 proc. setup - Parky ?
Gremlin_WoH replied to Wels's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
That would have been my next suggestion. I remembered the E0 stepping needed a BIOS update for boards older than the E0 stepping CPU. Look into your mainboard manual if the BIOS has a built in flash utility. This way you coudl save the new BIOS file to an USB stick and flash it via the BIOS tool. Do not flash it with a Windows Tool you may find on the CD that may be delivered with the mainboard. get the newest BIOS file for your board specifically from the ASUS site. Warning: Flashing is at your own risk. Also before you flash go into the BIOS and set it to default values. That's important because new BIOS tend to store their settings differently than the odler versions. After doing so leave the BIOS by saving the default settings on exit, power down your PC and restart it. Then go into BIOS and flash the new one. The BIOS .rom file needs to be named in a certain manner the flash tool expects. If you have a separate Clear CMOS Button on your board as I have switch the PC off and press this button to clear the CMOS entries. Cheers Gremlin -
Slightly OT: E8400 proc. setup - Parky ?

If you do not plan to use a quad core on Socket 775 in the near future you could buy an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. It is about 24 Euro and well worth the money. It is cooling my 4.15 GHz clocked E8400 (stepping before E0) very reliably. Around 40 °C on idle and 53 °C running OFF P3 in its full glory. When ASUS brings out the next BIOS with certain bugfixes regarding memory stability I will try higher. Also read the overclockers forums to get an idea. For example: http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/ http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/ You do not use tools for overclocking itself other than the BIOS settings. You use tools to control the success and the stability: CPU-Z, Everest, CoreTemp, Prime95, Intel Burn Test and so on. Hope this helps Gremlin -
Voss and the skidding, flat turn...?
Gremlin_WoH replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Womenfly did the turn WITHOUT any tailwind in a real Fokker Dr.I PERIOD. And OFF is a sim and not the real thing PERIOD. Read my post above why a flat turn won't work in a sim. -
Voss and the skidding, flat turn...?
Gremlin_WoH replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
In none of the W.W.I flight sims I managed to do the flat turn althoug I have tried countless hours. I had a conversation with Womenfly about the flat turn. She said she did it in a real Fokker Dr. I replica. The problem is all the W.W.I flight sims I have flown except Flying Corps I think use table based flight dynamics. I am not sure but Flying Corps was programmed with a fluid dynamics based flight model. In a table based flight model you move your joystick and the whole plane moves correspondingly with a reference to stored values. In a fluid dynamics based flight model the air flow around the wings and control surfaces is modeled. If you move your joystick only the control surfaces will be moved and the results from the changed air flow around the control surfaces will make the plane move. A table based FM is much simpler than a fluid based one but it does not eat up that much processor time. I presume it is simply not possible to simulate a flat turn as this - although looking pretty simple - must be a very complex manoevre fluid dynamics wise. And it can only performed by one plane - the Fokker Dr.I. I have tried that in OFF P2 and P3 also but the Fm simply does not allow for this as CFS 3 flightmodel is table based. By the way even Microsoft's FSX has still table based flight models. One flight sim that immediately comes to my mind is Flight Unlimited by Looking Glass. This one had a fluid dynamics based flight model and you could fly aerobatic manoevres like in no other sim. In my opinion a Dr.I doing the flat turn may be able in a flight sim with fluid dynamics based FM but not with a table based one. BTW, Hellshade, Voss could do the flat turn which would give him huge advantage over any other plane because it is reported to be a very tight turn. But 7 SE5a were just too many. -
Normally you should be able to climb away. What I do is to get sure no one catches me thus I perform a climbing turn with the Dr.I. But that's me with years of practice with the AFM Dr.I in Red Baron 3D No AI can follow that. The only possibility for the enemy to catch me is to extend (still climbing) and come back. But as soon as the enemy extends I follow him (being higher) and pepper him with Kaiser Wilhelm's blue beans. As soon as he turns around not liking what I do I perform the climbing turn again and present him a bad target to aim at. O.K. this was some example of Uncle Gremlin's Magic Tricks Box. What could have been in your case is that your angle was too steep and climbing performance was not optimal. You probably missed the sweet spot. 62 mph is 100 km/h. In my opinion the sweet spot should be at a higher airspeed something around 110 - 120 km/h => 78 -74 mph. Damn, you British people should just drop those damn miles per hour and stick to the international standards Cheers

A little Red Baron reminiscence

I remember that one from the Wikipedia article you wrote which was stupidly deleted by some other Wikipedia user. I always wanted to have that as an article for the Red Baron 3D section on Wings Of Honor. May I use that? I still have a copy of the Wikipedia version. Cheers -
Excellent addition to OFF. May I host this at Wings Of Honor for download? Cheers

A little Red Baron reminiscence

Dutch, JG666_GremlinXO here. All those guys were present from the beginning of Red Baron II. Sensei is Canadian, he is member of the Wing Walkers -> WWSensei. He was part of the 17 Hours W.W.I Flight Sim development team. Since then I lost track of him. Von Tom emerged on the Delphi SWWISA forums about 2 years ago and posted an update to his campaign manager (available on Wings Of Honor). Beery's Super Patch 2.0 is still available on Wings Of Honor too. I had some contact with RAF_Gromit but this has been a while back. Todd 'Wingstrut' Comeau used to have a website with great aircraft profiles which has now vanished from th eweb. There is onlysome of it left at www.archive.org. Sygrod's RB II site is still on the web: http://home.golden.net/~ksharman/rb/Main.html -
A Revelation...........
Gremlin_WoH replied to Todt Von Oben's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Exactly what I have in mind. I will make a basic assignment and refine it with some logical programming. As soon as I have this basic assignment I will start a project on my site to gather some feedback from other Cougar Users. Of course everyone has his own preferences but I try to map the buttons as logical as I can under the given circumstances. Of course with a 'one fits it all' approach there have to be some sacrifices but the advantage would be to learn the buttons once and use it in many W.W.I sims. -
A Revelation...........
Gremlin_WoH replied to Todt Von Oben's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
After crash landing his first plane because of beginner mistakes he learned a lot and became a very good pilot. Out of 13 unwanted landings he went down twice behind enemy lines and made it back. He was 11 years in Soviet prison camps and indeed being one of the last who came home. When the fighting ended he stayed with his men and surrendered to the Soviets. He could have surrendered to the Americans but that would have meant to leave his men on their own. The Soviets wanted to break him and his son died while he was in the prison camps but he never gave up to get free one day. I did not improve on my setup because of my limited time. Hell I could not even install patch 1.26 plus hotfix and try it out. What I have in mind is a unified HOTAS setup for the more modern W.W.I flight sims like OFF, First Eagles, RoF and so on. Thus every time I switch the sim I still have the same buttons for controlling it. Cheers -

Gremlin_WoH replied to Todt Von Oben's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hmmm ... you say something here, Olham. It reminds me of Erich Hartmann in W.W.II with a loving wife at home. But talking about risks he flew too risky as he never was shot down but had to go down 13 times because he went very near an enemy plane before opening fire and was hit by debris. I had the luck to know him as he was a friend of my family. -
Ah, there is Parky and his fine upstanding member .... errr ... Parky, the fine upstanding member ... (watching my warn level now)

Easy OFF Question - widescreen resolutions?
Gremlin_WoH replied to SGCSG1's topic in WWI Flight Sim Discussion
Widescreen resolutions are supported. 16:10 ratio as well as 4:3 can be chosen in the OFF Manager. I am using 1920x1200 right now.
