  3. I don't think TK specifically mentioned iPad but the relevant quote was; I'm not too a big fan of tablets either, but whether we like it or not, its going to be the way of the future. Windows 8 is schedule to come out this year with the touchscreen interface, and the mouse is going the way of doo-doos, if not now, soon. Their capability is still a bit limited compared to desktop PC, so the game market there is almost like the 80/90's desktop game market where great games could be developed with a very small team. It probably won't be this way for too long, the computing power of tablets and even smartphones are fast approaching that of desktop, so we figured its better to be in it now than later. My first reaction: Don't panic. It's not going to happen today, tomorow, next week, next month or next year. My second reaction: I'm probably typing and posting this using the last PC I'll ever buy. The same applies at work. My current PC at work will not be getting replaced. My third and over-riding reaction: It's HIS business. He knows his game, his market and the macro market better than anyone posting here. The timing of his switch requires good judgement so I wish him well. For the record, I don't like tablets either!
  4. Valmet Kotka - HävLLv 31, Ilmavoimat, 1982 For many years Finland had cast envious eyes at Sweden's ability to produce indigenous weapons systems that were comparable to anything produced anywhere and, in particular, Sweden's ability to produce combat aircraft that met their unique defensive requirements. Indeed, they were so impressed with the Draken's ability to take off from a short section of 'motorväg', make an automatic all-weather interception at Mach 2 and then vanish back into the Swedish landscape that they eagerly negotiated with the Swedish government to not only purchase the Draken but to also licence-produce it using Valmet (their state-owned heavy industry company). Valmet had already cut their teeth with licence-production of the Fouga Magister and the indigenously designed aircraft Vihuri and Vinka training aircraft and during the early 1970's the Valmet drawing office were sketching out a proposed Draken replacement clearly influenced by the contemporary Saab Viggen but generally scaled-down to fit a single afterburning Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan. Given the project name of Kotka 80, by early 1973 the design was showing sufficient promise for Valmet to be given a contract order for 60 single-seat Kotka (Eagle) multi-role fighters and 12 Kotka two-seat trainers with a planned in-service date of 1980. Design and development moved smoothly and the Kotka entered service in 1981 when Hävittäjälentolaivue 31 (Fighter Squadron 31) converted from the MiG-21.

  6. Mmmm. A few Finns have reviewed it and not adversely commented on it (perhaps they're too polite).

  10. BTW Ignore the 'CV' serials which are simply a hangover from it being based on the Convair 201.

North American Shark FGA.2 for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2 This is a very simple mod of the stock Third Wire F-100D to give a fictional North American Shark FGA.2 (I guess the RAF didn't fancy the 'Super Sabre' name) with markings for; No.1 Squadron in standard RAF Camo with three-colour national markings. No.54 Squadron in standard RAF Camo with three-colour national markings. INSTRUCTIONS 1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the SharkFGA2 folder into your main Aircraft folder. 2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the SharkFGA2 folder into your main Decals folder. 3. From the WEAPONS folder drag and drop the two 'AS' missiles into your Weapons folder. That's it! CREDITS Thanks to Third Wire for a great little game/sim. Thanks to hgbn (Henrik) for uploading his superb F-100D templates to the community. And thanks to everyone in the wider Third Wire community. F-23E for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2 This is a simple mod of Dels' excellent F-23A 'Black Widow' to give a fictional F-23E 'Karish' (Shark) of the Israeli Air Force with markings for; No.110 squadron - The Knights Of The North Squadron. No.119 Squadron - The Bat Squadron (with toned-down markings). BACKSTORY With the success of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom and F-15 Eagle in Heyl HaAvir service the Israeli's were hoping that the Northrop/McDonnell Douglas F-23A 'Black Widow' would win the USAF's ATF competition to continue their successful relationship with the McDonnell Douglas team at St. Louis but unfortunately Lockheed Martin's victory in the ATF competition looked like bringing an end to a long and enduring partnership. However in a brave move, in May 1991 the Northrop/McDonnell Douglas team secured permission from Congress to actively market the F-23 to (State Department) 'approved' nations and offered a single-seat multi-role version called the F-23E (Export) to Germany, Japan, Israel and the UK. With Germany looking for any excuse to get out of the Eurofighter consortium and facing high reunification costs they persuaded the UK to team up in a combined purchase of 200 F-23E's. In return, this led to the German and UK Governments persuading Northrop/McDonnell Douglas to make BAe and MBB prime sub-contractors for any further export sales. However, with only 200 F-23E's on order Northrop/McDonnell Douglas were not convinced that it was enough to start a viable programme but the breakthrough came in January 1994 when the USAF agreed to purchase 100 F-23A's for PACAF (the air component of United States Pacific Command) and this move finally saw Japan and Israel also join the programme with 100 F-23E's each. INSTRUCTIONS 1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the F-23E folder into your Aircraft folder. 2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the F-23E folder into your Decals folder. That's it! CREDITS As always, thanks to Third Wire for a great little game/sim. Massive thanks to Dels for this superb add-on aircraft, it's one of the very best. And, finally, thanks to everyone in the wider Third Wire community. Regards Spinners Version 2 - January 6th, 2024
