  2. Very thoughtful and a good read but I think the right decision was made when the Navy checked out. Of course, further back in time the wrong decision was made to merge the two programmes together. Do you know that in many ways, the Navy came off best. They had the first true modern multi-role jet fighter coming off the production line and entering service in spades and got the F-14A in double quick time once the right decision was made and it was just a pity that they had to use the TF-30 engine. The Air Force, who never wanted side-by-side seating and wanted a slim nose for ground-attack, got a seriously compromised aircraft (don't think about how good it was, think about how far short of the actual specification it was) at an horrendously high cost. When you throw in GD's misery of the aircraft having weight and drag about 25% higher than their estimates, a poor engine and a poor inlet design then the programme was a good example of how not to do things. The best account I've read about the whole genesis and development programme is the F-111 chapter in Bill Gunston's excellent book, "Attack Aircraft of the West". Slightly OT, there are some great 'in service' profile drawings of the Boeing TFX submission here; http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,20663.0.html

  10. File Name: McDonnell Douglas F4H-1 'Project High Jump' File Submitter: Spinners File Submitted: 31 January 2010 File Category: F-4 McDonnell Douglas F4H-1 'Project High Jump' for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2 This is a simple mod of the stock F-4B to give a representation of one of the most famous Phantoms of all time - F4H-1 149449 that was used to set eight 'time-to-climb' records during early 1962 at NAS Brunswick, Maine and at NAS Point Mugu, California. Most books on the Phantom make reference to this astonishing series of record-breaking flights (even more remarkable as they were production machines and not stripped down prototypes) and there are some good articles on the interweb too. N.B. Stopwatch not included! INSTRUCTIONS 1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the F-4B_PHJ folder into your Aircraft folder. 2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the F-4B_PHJ folder into your Decals folder. CREDITS Thanks to Third Wire for the continuous improvement of a great little game/sim. And thanks to everyone in the wider Third Wire community. Regards Spinners Version 2 - 23/08/13 Version 1 - 31/01/10 Click here to download this file
  11. Actually, I'd be grateful if someone could write a simple mission to give no wingman and no enemy aircraft! I understand that to smash the lower altitude records they took off without flaps, kept nice and low to get the speed up and then zoomed upwards. In the sim, if your airfield is in a flat area, you can take off without flaps, wing level at 20m and hit Mach 1.2 at sea level (reminiscent of 'Sageburner') before hauling back on the stick. Huge fun!
  12. Very nice preview - really looking forward to this!
