Afghanistan Terrain
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
You can use paratroopers, but this is no part of a terrain, its part of the planes or better said part of the ammo. And walking paratroopers i havent seen for SFP1/WOE/WOI. But it would be a nice feature. -
Adjusted Ranges, Stock T-72A, and Marcfighter M1A1
Gepard replied to EricJ's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Yeah, in the meantime we call it L/55. Its longer now, better now, more lethal. Penetrates 810mm RHA at 2000m range. But now my two cents to panzer armours. The mainproblem in the program is, that the modern types of armour like Chopham, Mehrschicht, Hohlraum etc are not modelled. All values are only in rolled steel (RHA), with the related problem, that a modern armour has different capabilities to withstand different types of rounds. Lets take the T-72M1 of the east german army as example. It proved in weapon tests in 1991 as unvulnerable against NATO ATGM warheads and HEAT ammo, but vulnerable at subcaliber darts. The front armour of the hull was 221 mm. Of this were 121 mm steel in two layers and 100 mm glas fibre ceramics in two layers. The front armour plate has an inclination of 68°, what means by simple mathematics, that a round would have to penetrate around 590mm armour. Which values we should use? But also without modern armours we have a problem. An example. The good old PVI Tiger had a front armour of 100mm. The T-54 had also 100mm frontarmour. Also both tanks have nominal the same protection level. But the frontarmour plate of the T-54 has a inclination of 55° (if i remember right). By using simple maths (aqvivalent thickness= nominal thickness / cos angle of inclination) the T-54 had a protection value of 175 mm. Which value is the correct for the entry in the data.ini? -

A Mi-24 surrounded by Taliban. Its time to destroy it, before it comes into wrong hands. As you imagined new groundtargets in Afghanistan terrain. -

In game maps and mission Build question
Gepard replied to quack74's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
KMD use the planningmap, the in game map is generated directly in the game from the terraintile file .tfd. -
Lindr, you say smoking is onboard of a submarine stricly forbitten. I think it is true. But there is already the human factor. I served out my army time in late 80th in the GDR (East Germany) in a helicopter squadron. Friends of me served at Laage Airbase as Su-22 technicians. They told me that when soviet pilots delivered new Su-22 at Laage, my friends had to clean the cockpits and in nearly one third of all cases they found soviet brand cigarette butts, although it was strictly forbitten to smoke.
-
Dont forget the human factor. There must be a reason, why the fire suppresion system was activated. Perhaps one of the sailors has smoked. Some days ago in germany a traveler bus burned out because someone has smoked on the toilett, result 20 death.
-
I see in the first way the man, the sailor who has lost his life. A sailor is a comrade of all sailors around the world. It is sad for each single lost man, wheter he is russian, german, english, french, american or something else. Its a reason to morn, especially in time of peace. They man who died had all parents, wifes, children, friends. They were humans and they died caused by a technical mailfunction in a ship what was on a test trail. Accidents happen and accidents cost human lifes.

Satellite Scenery...Is it possible?
Gepard replied to Bananimal's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Midway terrain is an example of partial use of sat pics. Kure atoll is done completly by sat pics, but for midway islands i used a mix between sat pics and already existing tiles. The main problem is the size of the files. If you would follow my way to make midway to build, lets say Israel, you would get a size, that it would be impossible to share it via internet at the moment. -
SAR missions
Gepard replied to viperBAT32's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
SAR or better CSAR would be a nice feature. Perhaps we should ask TK. Normaly he is listening to the community. I would also like to see escord missions where helis escorting a column of trucks or APC to defend them against enemy ground objects (Taliban for instance) -
Accidents can happen. And it happen in all armies and navies around the world. If i think how many man we lost during my military time by accidents and how many people we lose today, then we have no real reason to blame he russians.

To say it in the first line, as action thriller the new James Bond movie is acceptable. But a James Bond movie had to be more than an action thriller. I expect to see and listen all the small details which i love and miss this time. I expext the "My name is Bond, James Bond" I expect that he drinks his martinis "shaken, not stired" I expect to see Moneypenny and her neverending "love" to Bond. I expect to see Q and his funny toys. and and and Finaly i expect to see James Bond as a british Gentleman with all his noblesse, snobism, sexism and his stiff upperlip. I expect to see James Bond as a Lion under the cover of the gentleman, not as a Rambo immitation in a smoking.

next version of Midway terrain is on a good way What will be new? The number of target areas was increased from 10 to 21. +Kure Atoll airfield is now operational from 1943 +Trenches and AAA Machinegun sites are added on Midway. +PTBoat base added +2 Marine Camps +1 Radiostation +1 Radarstation +US Flags added For the case that you want to know, what if the japanese Landing operation would have been successfull i added as easteregg the file Midway What if_targets.ini. There the Midways and Kure atoll are in japanese hands. The japanese Navy is operating close to the islands and is waiting on the US counterstrike.

What causes......?
Gepard replied to WombRaider's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
The terrain is not flattened for the runway. It seems to be, that some terrains which whad no problems before latest patches now show this problem you mention. My Israel2 terrain is one of this examples. I dont know why it happen. Normaly it should not, but it does. -

Mirage 2000EM in the last time to finish this mod Mi-24D for testing Afghanistan terrain -
Wrench, Midway terrain is not forgotten but Afganistan terrain had at the moment a higher priority for me. Give me the usual two weeks and then i will release the Midway terrain version with added target areas which are partly took over from your files or which are inspired by them.

Afghanistan Terrain
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Its a nice idea to have crashed helicopters on the map. I know, that Capun has such static helis on his page. I will ask him wheter i can include them into Afghanistan terrain. I see 2 possibilities for such heli ground objects: 1. the downed heli is to destroy, so that no sensitive technologie is falling into wrong hands 2. a downed heli crew is to protect against attacking enemies. No 1 i can include without problems into the terrain, the No.2, i think is more for scriped missions. -

Formosa Strait Terrain version 1.0
Gepard posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
File Name: Formosa Strait Terrain version 1.0 File Submitter: Gepard File Submitted: 31 May 2008 File Category: Terrains FORMOSA STRAIT TERRAIN ===================== I. Formosa Strait terrain is made for "Wings Over Europe" WOE. With certain limitations you can use it in WOV, WOI and SFP1 too. (See PS on bottom of this file.) ============================================== II. Formosa Strait Terrain covers the island of Taiwan, a part of the coastline of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) and the Strait between which has different names like Formosa Strait, Taiwan Strait or Taiwanhaixia. All names i use are taken from an old german atlas and it seems to be that there are a lot of different transcriptions of chinese names in german or english language. Formosa Strait Terrain is a nearly 100% terrain, what means, that the distances are not cut down to 60% as in the GermanyCE standard terrain.Certain differences are caused by warp while converting GOTOPO30 satellite height data into WOE format. The position of the runways should be more or less correct, their direction is not always as in reality. The airfields themself are made by using variations of WOE standard airfileds and by using the 9 airfileds i made for Deutschland terrain. Formosa Terrian has 233 target areas this are 14 waypointdefinitions for panzer battles 2 missile bases (PRC) 6 coast defence missile batteries(PRC) 15 Bridges (PRC) 10 Bridges (Taiwan) 19 SAM sites (PRC) 14 SAM sites (Taiwan) 7 airfields (PRC) 15 airfields (Taiwan) 41 industrial targets in towns (PRC) 44 industrial targets in towns (Taiwan) 1 powerplant complex with 3 industrial areas (PRC) 1 power plant complex(Taiwan) 2 ports (PRC) 9 ports (Taiwan) 4 EWR (PRC) 5 EWR (Taiwan) 3 PRC Warship groups 4 taiwanese Warship groups 3 Carrier Battle stations etc To use Formosa Strait Terrain you should have installed a WeaponPack and western SAM. You can fins HAWK SAM and WeaponPack at www.combatace.com ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ III. INSTALLATION 1.)unzip all files into your Wings over Europe/Terrain folder 2.)unzip Groundobject.zip into your Objects folder. (this file install modified versions of the SumnerFram2 destroyer and the Cargoship. It also install a Silkwork Anti Ship missiles launcher and chinese Panzers of the Types 59, 63, 69 and 80) Thats it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ IV. I want to say thank you to Darreck for the Coolingtowers and Enrico Gennari for the files which i used to create the ports, which were originaly made for individual airbases which are available for SFP1 Deutschland terrain and WOE. ******************************************* V. Formosa Strait Terrain IS FREEWARE. COMMERCIAL USE IS NOT ALLOWED. If you find bugs please post them in StrikeFighters section of Combatace.com forum. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ VI. Hope you enjoy it. Michael (Gepard) ============================================ VII. Made in Germany Mai 2008 ============================================ VIII. PS Q: How i can get Formosa Strait Terrain running in WOV, WOI or SFP1 A: 1. Open file Formosa.ini 2. Look for line CatFile=..\GermanyCE\GermanyCE.cat 3. Replace this line with: for WOV: CatFile=..\VietnamSEA\VietnamSEA.cat for WOI: CatFile=..\IsraelME\IsraelME.cat for SFP1: CatFile=..\Desert\Desert.cat 4. Download a WOE capable terrain replacement tileset via Internet. Such tilesets you can find at www.combatace.com Limitations are caused by the fact, that certain objects which are standard in WOE (power plants, bridges) are not always included in WOV, WOI or SFP1. Click here to download this file -
Looks good. And this are birds which would fit perfectly into a Wings over Korea.
