Insignias for a new nation
Gepard posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I need the wisdom of our forum. I made a new nation. Added this nation in the nations.ini, which belongs to flight folder. The sequence number of this nation is [Nation213]. I made a insignia for this nation and put it in decals folder. But if i start a plane for this nation in game the insignias are not to see on the plane. Has someone the idea, in which folder i must place the insignia213.tga file? -
I name this plane Bob, or even better Perry.

Insignias for a new nation
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
It will come the the terrain Battle of Britain 2 Operation Seelöwe. I tought it could be interesting to switch the campaign from 1940 to 1956 with Hunters and Canberras for the blue side and MiG-17 and IL-28 for the red side. The historical (what if) background is a successfull assassination of Adolf Hitler and a successfull military coup against the nazis. In result of the events a new german government was formed and a Republik Deutschland (Republic of Germany) was founded. Between the RoG and the western allies it came to an armistice and later a peace treaty. The war against the USSR was continuing fighting which ended in 1950 with a draw. In 1956 the RoG overwhelmed France again and started a second attempt to conquer Britain. -

Fuel tank in russian language is "toplivnij bak". The TB in PTB-450 could stand for it. But i have no idea for what the P is standing.

In November 2016 my book "Mi-24" was released by the german publishing house MOTORBUCHVERLAG. And so it looks. 207 pages full of informations and photos. (Weight 1.050 gram, for our american friends more than 2 pounds.) Written in german language. Some guys asked me here in the forum, whether there would be an english edition. And here it comes: published by Schiffer Publishing in January 2020 Price 39,99$ Includes: the history of Mi-24 development, from the first steps of the "flying Infantry fighting Vehicle" concept, over the Mi-24 prototypes to all Mi-24 versions (21 at least). A walkaround and detailed description of the Mi-24. The armament, including short development history of guns and missiles used by Mi-24s. The Mi-24 tactics developed for the war in Central Europe (written after east german Mi-24 combat drill manuals) The soviet tactics in Afganistan and the fight against the Stinger. A short comparision between Mi-24 and american attack helicopters of the timeframe (AH-1, AH-56, Sikorsky S-67 Blackhawk, AH-64A) The Mi-24 in worldwide use with focus of Germany, but of american use of Mi-24 too. Hope you enjoy it!

The first versions of the Mi-24 could be equipped with internal auxilary tanks with 825 litres each. It were simply two barrels with fuel which were placed in the cargo bay. From version Mi-24P and V the heli could carry 4 external fuel tanks under the hardpoints of the stubwings each tank contains 425 litres. The external fuel tanks were used for ferry missions only. During combat missions no external fuel tank was used. The type designation of the fuel tank i cant found. But along with soviet terminolgy i wuld call them 425 Liter exterlan fuel tank for Mi-24. (BTW the same tanks are used on Mi-28.)

AIM-7M, Super 530D and R-27R comparison
Gepard replied to tiopilotos's topic in Military and General Aviation
The silent shot was possible with MiG-23 too. During Lebanon war 1982 syrian MiG-23MF fired R-23R missiles in silent shot mode and then broke off. Other MiG-23MF took over the task to guide the missiles. The syrians claimed to have shoot down some israeli planes with this methode. With MiG-23ML this methode was not possible. -
View File MiG-21SMT MiG-21SMT *************** This mod is made for SF2. ---------------------------------------------------------- I. History One of the major problems of the MiG-21 was the short range of the plane. The reason for it was the small internal fuel volume. To solve the problem additional tanks on the back were installed. First one in the MiG-21PF, later three beginning with MiG-21R. When the soviet Air Force demanded to make the MiG-21 to a nuclear weapon platform soon the short range seemt to be the major problem. So the designers took the latest version of the bird, the MiG-21SM and increased the fuel capacity of the back tanks dramatically. The MiG-21SMT was born. In the troops the plane was not liked very well. The pilots hated it to fly such an non agile plane. The plane got the nickname "Humpback" and this was not meant positive. Later a lot of SMT were reworked "in field", the big backtank was removed and replaced by the backtank of the MiG-21bis Lasur. AIM-7M, Super 530D and R-27R comparison
Gepard replied to tiopilotos's topic in Military and General Aviation
It was a reliable weapon, comparable with the latest AIM-7. The major plus point was the option of "silent shot", what meant, that it was possible to launch the missile without activating the radar of the plane. The missile was internaly guided to a certain point, close to the expacted flightpath of the target. When this point (approx 10 km distance from target) was reached the plane would switch on the radar and took over the guidance for terminal approach. The R-27R was the weapon of choice against bombers and in head on combat situations. You should not forget, that in 1989 the radar of the MiG-29 and Su-27 was safe against all western jammers. The american specialists needed some days in 1991 to find a way to jam the MiG-29 radar. It was only possible, because they had a german MiG-29 at hand. -

I dont know from where the info is that the AIM-7M had a kill ratio of 68.2%. Tom Clancy claimed in his book "Fighterwing" a kill ratio of 36%. And this is bad. But much better than in Vietnam, where the kill rate of the Sparrow was somewhere near 6%. -

I doubt that the L stands for Lokator. The P indicated already that it was a plane with radar. P stands for perekhvatchik = interceptor. F stands for Forsash = afterburner or increased power. I think the L stands for Lokhki = light. -
IAF in 1973 Yom Kippur without US aircraft?...
Gepard replied to dtmdragon's topic in Military and General Aviation
The topic "Nesher" we had discussed in already in 2009 here: The basic was an article in the german air magazin Fliegerrevue 7/2009 page 64, written by Tom Cooper. Here a picture of an Nesher in israeli museum https://www.airliners.net/photo/Israel---Air/Dassault-Mirage-5J/0798878?sid=f6b2d59ca5df280b61399c12c90ba151 interessting is the remark: "501 (cn 1) Despite the official story that this is an IAI Nesher, a check of the aircraft ID plates in the wheel wells reveals that this is really the first production Dassault Mirage 5J. On display in the Israel Air Force Museum." For the article about the american pilots in IAF i must search in my old Air Forces Monthly. It could be, that the article was from Tom Cooper too. It was written by using egyptian sources. One point i remember was the different behavior of the israeli CSAR troops. The egyptians were astonished that in the case of some shot down israeli pilots no attempt to rescue was made by IDF, while other pilots, shot down in more dangerous areas, were rescued by using a lot of manpower and helicopters. Later ones, the egyptians believed, were american pilots. An other hint that it could be american pilots was, that the found wrecks in that areas had not had camo paint. As far as i can remember. I will try to find that article. It will take a while to find it in the more than 100 AFM i have. -
