Can anyone identify this aeroplane?
Platinum Rogue replied to drdoyo's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
It's the MiG-29K, I believe it was in the late stages of development (Carrier suitability testing) when the USSR dissolved itself. If you want to fly one on your PC, for now you can have the IRIS FS9 version, which is very nice -

Platinum Rogue replied to drdoyo's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
You wouldn't want to try landing that on the Kuznetsnov. 'Aint seeing no arrestor-in' hook...!!!111! It would be a great addition to WOE though, I hope it's finished soon. -
I'm successfully using TrackIR-2 in ArmA. Although I use the term loosely - what I mean is, it works like it should. Doesn't make shooting the enemy any easier but it's most useful when flying. I re-mapped the centre and enable hotkeys so I could still give half of my squad orders.

WTH?

Maybe gravity was taking a short nap when the yak got hit -
Great post, streakeagle for President! :) OFP and ArmA are great all-round shooters and have passable helo flight modeling. I don't have any complaints with ArmA's helo physics, besides being able to team up in the Cobra or MAPFACT Apache more than makes up for it, and I only fly in ArmA using keyboard and mouse I reckon EECH with the community mods will give you the closest thing to what you want, kiep. Good physics, good avionics, reasonable terrain modeling, a wide variety of types of mission - recon, attack, SEAD, escort, insertion and transport are all available in a dynamic campaign environment.

hurricane crashed killed pilot in Uk , battle of britain flight
Platinum Rogue replied to gambit168's topic in The Pub
Truly a very sad loss, but at least the pilot went out doing something he loved. R.I.P. -
Dud Sparrows
Platinum Rogue replied to Killer B's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
You need to keep the target locked and visually track it within the HUD frame while the missile is in flight, as this provides a fairly accurate representation of the size and gimbal limits of the boresight radar cone. It's also a good idea to fire 2 missiles at each target, due to the high failure rate of the '60s missile technology. I've had situations where I had to fire 3 or 4 sparrow at 1 aircraft to get the kill. -

Hmmm, Jane's USAF. It's amazing how easily a 'not-quite-there' sim can be forgotten by the majority of us here All the more surprising if you consider the work done to bring content from Jane's IAF into it with the superpatches and such. Maybe it's another case of retrograde amnesia... Along came Strike Fighters tempting us away with it's mods Just for grins, a short slide-show of some JF15 action. You Like, ey? And here's some Strike-Eagle simming porn, courtesy of DSB design and FS2004: -
Thirdwires F-104G
Platinum Rogue replied to MigBuster's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Perhaps my understanding of the physics is a little flawed here, but if (as above) you have more drag than thrust, should you even be able to move forward? Also, is <6000lbs thrust a bit, um, low for this aircraft? -
F-101 VooDoo
Platinum Rogue replied to delta6's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'd like very much to see the full set of century fighters available in SF/WOE. Since the -101 that was WIP won't be done, is someone going to take it on as a new project? I wish I had the skills, but alas... :( -

Kind of a related enquiry here; Is the Pave Tack pod in the weapons pack animated, i.e. it's rotating head? If not, could it be done? -

I didn't doubt for a minute that you did, but, sometimes the obvious can get overlooked. -

Platinum Rogue replied to viperfalcon's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
So, we've established that Viperfalcon was thinking of JF15 in his original thread, although he prefers to believe it was released less than 9 years ago As far as I can make out, the only sims released since 2000 featuring any kind of F-15 out of the box are LOMAC and WOE. But there's no Strike Eagle in those. And no Middle East theatre. Could you be mixing up your aircraft here, VF? The only recent sim set in the middle east that I can think of is F-18 Precision Strike Fighter, which I was told was re-hashed old Graphsim's Hornet 3.0. Might it also be possible that you were flying JF-18 with the TSH mod, in the JF15 middle-east theatre? -

Hehe, boom-boom, out go the lights!! It's a lot like riding a bicycle.... Thanks for the help there, FS -
Being the proud owner of 3 Saitek P-8000 pads, I have no use for clickable cockpits in any sims I play... Not much use for a keyboard either I like the look of that touch-buddy though...

OK, well then it's a pity it doesn't run on MY PC lol. When I click 'fly' it brings up a windows message box filled with some Asian script then CTD's. I need a glidewrapper then? -
I have the Xicat version of it, I paid money for it but to run the latest version I'd have to buy it all over again. It never clicked with me though.

They ALL look like screens from the version of Jane's F-15 I have too. Pity it doesn't run on XP though. I only keep it for it's donor elements to JF18 TSH. Take a look here and see which, if any, jog your memory: http://www.migman.com/1997_combat.htm http://www.migman.com/1998_combat.htm http://www.migman.com/1999_combat.htm Some great memories there -
How to reload weapons / fuel in Multiplayer
Platinum Rogue replied to CHSubZero's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I believe it's CTRL-W for Re-arming and CTRL-R for Re-fuelling. If your aircraft needs repair, you have to shut the engines down first, then wait a few minutes, repair time varies according to the level of damage. Also this isn't the forum you should be asking this question in, there is a LOMAC forum here for that. But you're welcome anyway -
Modding HUD
Platinum Rogue replied to Tantobot's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Still no progress for me, any way I create/replace the mask, I see only yellow bars where the tapes were. Could this be the cockpit LOD surface showing through? -
Modding HUD
Platinum Rogue replied to Tantobot's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hi FC, thanks for the timely reply. I can confirm the file is still present. FYI, I'm using PSP 9 to edit. Where I'm falling down is at the 'make a new alpha channel' part. Once I delete the old alpha channel, my only option from the layers menu is to load a mask from disk. I happen to have a saved mask file the same size as the original HUD file. It's a completely transparent layer. This is the file I'm using as source for the new alpha channel, which I promote to the top layer and then save the image. following what you just said, I definitely saved the layer as an alpha channel, now the same fields are visible but now they are yellow instead of white -

Hm'Kay, this is what I get when I follow what you posted here... No doubt an elementary mistake but I'm not used to working with these layers and channels and all that shiznit -
Do You Fly Single Missions or Campaigns?
Platinum Rogue replied to Nicholas Bell's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks to all the great modders here, SF's just a big old sandbox to me so I mostly 'ooh and aah' at planes I downloaded in terrains I downloaded. I fly the occasional campaign mission, I've yet to survive to the end of one though, my average lifespan is 3 or 4 missions. Over-confidence is my biggest enemy! I spend some time editing loadouts to match what I've seen in pictures/manauls if they aren't available by default. I once completed a campaign in EECH without getting 'killed'. When you decide to play a game this way it really does focus your attention on survival rather than 'kill-em-all'. I'd recommend you all to try this style of play if you haven't already
