Quesstion to the gimp users
daddyairplanes replied to daddyairplanes's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
hmm might actually hafta d/l a turorial from the site. i can play with existing decals and change em into new all day long. but importing images and creating new is new ground for me but neccesary if i wanna decal the likes of the Happy Hooligans of the units in Texas with the Texas flag as a fin stripe. for us with lower end systems it is better to have a skin with a small skin folder and a large decal folder as that takes up less space than many skins for each squadron. back to the books....... -

yes this was discussed in Black Aces High with the nuggets in the Bombcat doing the exact same (1 circle into 2 circle) tactic to score on a F-4F with a 2500 hr veteran pilot! figured Ceasar might like that bit of info if he hasnt read the book already! -

yes sir pretty much for all Post nam USAF Phantoms. Navy tended to carry internally esp with late model birds (late Nam to the 80s) and brits for some reason i have never seen a photo of them carrying ECM! still i originally found out about it from your mod so i personally credit you fer me discovery. its not exactly the same but works same principal. btw GROPE ID's!?!??!?! thought those led to arrests @ dave nice Euro1! funny how being far from HQ they didnt give a !@# and had full color sharks maouths as opposed to 52d TFW! -

lemme see i redid all Phantom data inis (minus the brits, story for nother day) to show Sparrow station 1 as station group 5 and all the other three as group 4. Sparrow 1 also can fit LP and EP, to accomdate ECM and Pave Spike. got the idea from wrench tho its not exact on his EF-4C. course all my Phantoms minus any _78's and later have Spill104's smokier J79 mod included as well. Phantoms got "smokeless" engines round the 80's so i leave it as the stock dirtyexhaust emitter for the late model birds. finally if you add the A-10 loadout mod that allows 4 Mavericks as opposed to 6 or 2, it adds a bit o realism since only 4 were carried due to drag concerns usually. and i learned how to do all this only since Gen 2 came out! gen 1 i could barely run plug and play mods -

no more for you Spinners my eyes still hurt from the swedish Phantom! Sundowner they look great! finally some love for the USAFE side of the house! question to all though, why dont more of you guys use Wrenchs mod for the EF-4C that allowed 3 Sparrows and ECM??? -

the muzzle is on f-4e_5 towards the middle right. using wrench's 377th skin your 81st skin to compare in gimp(wrench's kinda blanks out the muzzle hole)its rough location is upper left corner 1900,600 lower right corner 2048,925 hopefully that helps now watch you say you dont use Gimp!(dammit!!!) as for wraparound, i am trying to get the last few active units down before releasing SEA Wrap and Euro 1 with big decal folder for all active units. it'll be for stock F-4D and E models post vietnam(read post 72) with hill 2 shortly after and ANG AFRES units much later. how long have i been working it? (hum the giligans island theme) when will it be done. well you knw that one:good: -

if you remember what im callin the 3 hour tour(cause of how long im takin) mod uses a variation on the stock decal ini and folder to provide ALL Phantom users. always figured a big decal folder is still smaller than a big skins folder of the same intent. even have a modded squadronlist.ini so all you have to do in game is pick yer squadron in the loadout screen or mission editor. mine now has three squadrons from the 45th TFW:grin: still my biggest issue with the 457th isnt the TH codes i can cut and paste my way to that.(yes i am simpleminded and stubborn in me ways) its getting that Texas flag stripe into the tga without blowing it up on file size or making it too fuzzy. thinking of making it my ownself from scratch but the star has me flustered hmmmmm 3 hour tour mod, coming to you in.............two weeks! -

very cool:good: drdoyo's 163 TFS skins in the Gen 1 d/l section feature a good skin for the SEA Wraparound skin. i have added the chaff and flare dispensers from Ant's Euro 1 skin to make it very workable for late model Phantoms in Gen 2 (including some cut and paste in good old Gimp to make it work on short nose Phantoms) and it may be transferable to TMF's Arnies and Weasels. the SEA skin is tight though by 79/80 many Phantoms round the fleet were Wraparound. some straight SEA Phantoms had white letters and regular national insignia while some were black letters and low viz insignia. all wraparounds were low viz , though they usually had full color unit markings. finally to do some rivet counting before bed the muzzle on the Hill 2 bird should be darker. mayber not black but darker give the heat from firing and the exhaust gases coming out. still a damn sight better than i can do though! -

yes wrench but 1 it is a part of the skin not a decal and 2 it is hard to pay attention to what you are doing cutting and pasting in gimp with 3 girls and a guinea pig in the house! no seriously trying to make a TX decal from that skin, but is being a pain in the butt for me. last attempt at it blanked the tail. i know it was the tga cause the wingmans tail with my regular tga was just fine. more trial and error (or begging and mooching if something finished is there:grin: ) here was the "rough draft" to see that another skin would work. -

arrgh how do you clear your global upload limit out? was about to show a Spang Loran Phantom and the friggin attachments wont let me upload as i have used 43 MB of a 40MB limit -
there are settings to set who is allowed to see your page, so you can be polite and friend them, yet still post that strip tease you did last night(sick sick man!) and keep them ignorant.

also most units had a mix of the paint jobs as they went thru maintenance. 163rd TFS at Fort Wayne Indiana had mostly Hill 2, some Euro 1 and two SEA Wraparound F-4Es on hand according to dr doyo and his readme. (photos are out there to support though), fer example. as for the 704th TFS i have pics (in b+w) of some of their birds where one side of the tail was nuetral gray with gunship gray markings (like normal) and the other side reversed light markings on dark tail! of course there is the cow pattern used by the 924 too...... so many options with Phantoms! as to users, according to USAF Phantoms 37th TFW also used Arnies with their Weasels to reduce hours on the airframes and also in hunter killer mode like 3rd TFW and 52d TFW did, pairing thru the squadrons instead one type in each squadron. (mod that into the game!) 4th at Seymour Johnson was primarily strike tasked, with previously mentioned book citing them using dumb bombs and compensating for the CEP gained with DMAS upgrade by using M117s to ensure target destruction! also remember Wrench has good idea with limiting PGMs in his Warbirds mod as they were not as prevelant in the 80's as they are today. they were the special rounds used on the most heavily defended targets, not what we dropped on the guy shooting at troops in a toyota! well just a few thoughts on the matter anywho. -
well it does fall on super bowl sunday, and is the real reason i requested the day of from drill(yea yea really:grin: ) no oddly my anniversary is getting easier to remember than my birthday. maybe cause im home more often then than on my birthday!
