Brave Lightning pilot
Stingray72 replied to greendog's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
F-4 was definitely not the most attractive plane either. I once saw a quote saying something like how it was so ugly that even gravity refused to touch it and that was how it was able to fly!!!! I myself am a huge F-4 fan (they didn't make them small snort snort) and am in love with how mean she looks, quote Brig. Gen. Robin Olds "Like a brooding hen, she squats half asleep over her clutch off eggs...sitting there. She is not a thing of beauty. Far from it. But she is my F-4." This plane has been quoted as a "Corvette with wings" as well, and she might not have been as fast as some other planes, she was certainly more capable than every thing else at the time!!! ~Stingray Oh, another ugly but sick plane: Warthog!! -
Feeling = chilled!
Stingray72 replied to carm's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I found a little info while digging, it was on "F-16.net". The man flying this jet may have been then Lt. Col David Goldfien. He lived and went on to make 1 star before retiring. The article references him flying "a very expensive glider". There was another F-16 shot down by ground forces this night as well. http://www.f-16.net/...rticle2167.html I also found a list of planes shot down during this campaign and it seems that no F-16's were downed with pilot losses. ~Stingray -
Which is the best dog fighter
Stingray72 replied to carm's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
What about a Scooter, like the Top Gun guys, the "Super E". That thing was capable of wringing it out, for a 1 holer with no afterburner she did really well. ~Stingray -

Best engine sounds in the game
Stingray72 replied to dsawan's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I'm more of a 2nd Gen jet guy, so to me the engine sounds for the F-4G and the F-14 are the coolest!!!! ~Stingray -
A proper tomcat pit?
Stingray72 replied to Freiwillige's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm with Slarti on that. I have only seen the SF1 series Tomcat, but the HUD looks like the stock one on the F-14A from MF. Maybe they re-used it? ~Stingray -
Increasing speed?
Stingray72 replied to tacoscent's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Not sure if this was thought about by the originator, but the F-35's advertised speed is Mach 1.6+, indicating that it is probably faster than 1.6, but I would guess not that much. Like Daddy was saying, the US is building planes for specific reasons and missions, not to go faster than anything else in a straight line; that's 1950's and 60's thinking, John Boyd and the Fighter Mafia put a stop to this with planes like the F-15 and F-16, which can pull extreme numbers at high altitude, but burn fuel at a criminal rate doing it. The Hornet can't even go Mach 2. Even the Raptor is only a Mach 2.2 a/c at altitude, indicating the importance of stealth and such above overall speed. On top of these indicators, aerodynamically, and I'm no engineer, she's a lump lol. I mean, the thing doesn't LOOK very fast to me as compared to other super fighters, and the mission isn't that of air superiority; when you think about the multirole capabilites and who is buying it, it sure is sounding more like the F-4 of today. One more thing is that this plane was way over it's either advertised or projected weight, so on top of everything else, she's a heavy pig. If you want to turn crazy Mach numbers download an F-22 or something!!! ~Stingray -
Start year questions
Stingray72 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hi!! I am trying to take pictures of old and new planes of the same squadrons. So far I have been doing F-4's and F-14's together. No I am trying to do F/A-18's and F-4's, but since the J was retired before the Bug was around I can't get them together. I am going to try to rename some skins and see if they can be N or S models, but can anyone tell me what I need to change to get them right? I tried changing the start year and I noticed two things: 1) when I save it just goes back to what was in there for default (not the first time I have experienced this, I ran into this with skinning the MF F-8's and never figured out the fix), 2) it changes depending on what plane you were trying to select for the single mission, so when I pick F-4J then open the options.ini it shows F-4, when I select F/A-18 it shows f/a-18. Any ideas? ~Stingray -

Sorry, didn't know where to post this question. And yes, I looked there on a hunch and found the service date for the a/c, changed it to an earlier year and was able to get the shot I was after. Thank you! ~Stingray -
F-86 skin request
Stingray72 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hi all and ~S!! I was wondering if someone might be able to whip out a quick skin. I am looking for a fictional F-86 for the IAF. I recently found one for the F-100 and that got my wheels turning. No rush, I am looking at blanks and Dhimari skins to tweak, but I am not a skinner. If anyone is gonna pick it up lemme know and thank you!! ~Stingray -
F-86 skin request
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hey Wrench? I got the F-86 ones to work, but the F-14 and F-100 are jacked up. I am trying to run them in WOI. The F-100 shows up, but there is no cockpit for in plane view and no airplane in external view. F-14 isn't even showing up in the plane list. I followed the same instructions as the F-86 one, which I had no problems with. I trouble shot a few times and am fairly sure I did it correctly. Any clues? ~Rob -

Stingray72 replied to greendog's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Not arguing that this was not a pilot's plane, I am merely saying that the look of her does little to satisfy my eyes. "..boy can she move!!!", remember?? ~Stingray -
F-86 skin request
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Also, upon heading over to place them in my folders, I noticed that the skins were not just skins, but full on a/c mods for this one and I also did the same for the F-14 and F-100D in Isreali colors. Wrench went ahead and fixed everything that would need to be fixed and all you have to do is download and drop the whole thing into your a/c directory!!!! Just plain cool Wrench! Woulda never found it though if it weren't for HGBN, so again credit to him and a HUGE thank you lol. ~Stingray -

AWSOME!!!!!! They are perfect. Thank you Wrench for doing these and thank you HGBN for pointing to that website. I had been al over it for pilot skins but had forgotten the A/C skins on there lol. ~Stingray -
Hi guys!! I just was flipping through the pages on here and seeing what interesting reads I could find before my girlfriend showed up, and I saw a reply on a post from Viper6 about SAM avoidance. Now, I just finished a great book called "First In, Last Out", it's about the WW guys in Vietnam, from F-100's to F-4's. In this book they use the technique touched on by Viper6, putting the SAM on your 1 to 2, then breaking up into it to get it to break up since it couldn't structurally handle those kinds of G's. This would work for them because the SA-2 didn't fly a path to intercept, they would more or less chase the plane. My question is: How are the SAM's modeled in game, and do they vary from game to game? I am reasonably sure that the missile systems changed as more advanced radar tech became available. So does the SA-2 in WOV fly like the early SA-2's did and "chase" the planes? Also, do the missiles in some of the newer campaigns fly the same types of paths as the ones in WOE / WOV or do they run intercepts? Or did they just model the SAM's to fly intercept paths? Thank you for whoever has answers! ~Stingray

Final F-111C flights today.

When you say that they never fired a shot in combat, do you mean specifically the RAAF or Varks in general? Ther have been F-111's in combat, Vietnam and Libya!!!! -
MF F-8 issues
Stingray72 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hello again everyone!! My newest problem is that I cannot get any of the skins to work for any of the F-8's using the normal methods. When I change the .ini to reflect the newest addition it doesn't seem to save. I'll go look after closing and it's there, then start the game and it's gone, then open the .ini again to find it has disappeared. Anyone else have prblems with these skins or know a fix for my prob? ~Stingray -
F-18E / F info
Stingray72 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hi all!!! So I have gotten fairly comfortable with mods and have kinda gone a little nutso with them lately, as most of you probably have lol. My question is about F-18 E & F downloads. I recently d/l and have been playing since the ODS mod for WOE. Very cool. Since I lack the capacity to leave anything alone (ask my truck, which has had 4 engines in a year for fun) I wanted to change a squadron of F-14's out for a new F-18. Now the fun lol. I have discovered that there are 3 F-18F's, and since the F-14 was a two seater I went with this. There is the EricJ, Erwin_Hanse, and Isky. What are the differences and which one is the best in one's opinion???? I actually didn't know they were different until I got to skinning them lol. Nice work all involved, and thatnk you in advance for input!!! ~Stingray -

Oh no lol, I didn't mean that I make my own. I wish I were talented enough for this kind of work. I meant as far as putting the skins in the folder!! Sorry for the confusion..... ~Stingray -
F-18E / F info
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Thanks all for your input. EricJ, nice to meet you!! Like I said, I didn't know there were other versions until I started skinning them. I became apparent when I got a white airplane and had done everything right except look at the skins themselves, ie, I had my folder set to view small icons, and it only shows me the infraview logo instead of the actual skin. It didn't help either that SidDogg is doing skins for both the Erwin and the EricJ models lol. ~Stingray -
Craig, if I am not mistaken, the 243 is an international a/c distress freq, 121.5 is maritime (maybe?). While we have a/c, we don't have gear on the small boats to pick this up. Our ships have pretty advanced DF capabilites, and you can punch in whichever freq you wish to follow to source, but the ones on the small boats pick up VH-F freq's and 121.5, To the family, Capt. Haney is in my prayers, may he rest for eternity in peace and walk among the heroes that arrived before him.

Dang luck lol, you better hope the campaign ends before yo are outta planes!!! Also, how the heck do you get promoted to Capt for getting shot down? In the USCG if I run a boat aground on anything but for emergencies I lose my letter and a stripe..... ~Stingray -
Oregon ANG Red Hawk for Mirage Factory's F-15a
Stingray72 commented on =58=Sprig's file in F-15 Eagle Skins
Very sad. I am stationed at USCG STA Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, WA. The parts that were recovered of this A/C were loaded onto a Coast Guard 87 ft patrol boat and brought to my station for loading up and then trucked to the ANG base. My section was on duty and had to help cart these off to the truck from the dock. I hope he is resting peacefully knowing he was well cared for by our service. It was somber, none of the usual joking from the crew like we usually do when we are moving stuff around. A few weeks after this happened an old USAF crash boat came up from CA to head to Portland and then back down. Weird huh? ~Stingray -

January 23, 1991 Weather: CAVU Time: 0721 23rd TFS , King Khalid AB - F-4G Tiger Flight: Tiger 01: 2nd LT James Notheisen Tiger 02: 2nd Lt Halbert Smith Mission: SEAD - destroy enemy anti air capabilities near Hejef AB. Took off normally from King Khalid AB and flew to target area with no threats or opposition. Once near target area began picking up radar signals. fired a HARM missile and killed a Flat Face radar. proceeded to attack AAA around the AB destroying 4 gun site, 2 radar and two large caliber manned weaps. While on one of the runs I was hit several times by AAA and had to pull off target to asses damage; all clear so continued to go after AAA so the next flight could have an easier task. Fired last HARM at a threat received on my RHAW and killed an SA-8. Landed at King Khlid with no further action. James Notheisen was awarded an Air Medal and promoted to 1LT on this flight for his actions. Congratulations!!!!
