A-10 skin request
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
MiG Buster, I don't live there anymore, so I am unable to get the upclose pics until the next time I get home. That's provided that they are not deployed, which they are quite a bit. http://www.av8rstuff.com/a10pg1.html Here is a link to a patch website, it has an up close of the character that goes on the nacelles. The one I am seeing in the pictures is the Oriole, not the Warthog. I am not too interested in the Ravens name badge on the nose, but the squadron emblem on the nacelles and the state flag on the tail are the two I would love to have!! ~Stingray -

If not on the nacelles that's fine, the main thing is of course the decals on the tail. I love my state flag!!!! ~Stingray -

Wrench, Thanks for the info. I have seen this instruction and am just too dang dumb to find the files I need to change. I will work on it again though, and see if I can finally figure it out. As for the IL2 Skin, which one do you want and I will see what I can do. Can anyone make decals for me for this plane please!!!!! ~Stingray -

Yes, I suppose. To be honest, I don't know crap about how this game really works, just guesses; I am an IL2 guy, but I love this game!! If it just needs decals then great, but I still need someone to do it for me because I am just not good enough on these computers to figure it out. Heck, I can't even figure out pilot skins lol. ~Stingray -

Hi. Thank you for recognizing us and our service. We seem to get respect in small towns and on the internet on sites like this one lol. It's a really funny one for me as I am in the Coast Guard, we get even less respect than the rest. I have been for 13 years, been on 6 ships, including one tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on the mighty warship Wrangell, for a total of 10 years sea time, and am now at Station Cape Disappointment as a Surfman on the 47' Motor Lifeboat (MLB). I have never been shot at, but we did have a Mexican Stand Off with an Iranian gunboat one morning while I ws overseas. Very tense for a few minutes lol. Here is a video link to what I am doing now. Thank you again for recognizing us! ~Stingray http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs4WqaZA3qE -

F-105 air superiority fighter variant.
Stingray72 replied to KJakker's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
U/K Pilot was right on in his blurb. That F-111 was pretty much Congress trying to get everyone to buy a multi-role swing wing jobbie, but the Navy knew it would not work out as designed and said so. They ended up with a neato plane in the Tomcat, but we all know that while it is a superb interceptor, it is on average on maneuverability and was grossly underpowered until the D came out. Energy fighting IS where it is at. Thrust to weight only change how much energy you can maintain, and you can only maintain it IF you employ proper tactics with a gentle and deliberate hand. I am an IL2 kid as well, and have seen what he is talking about, even did it myself, the yanking of the stick and pumping of the throttle. After I read a book about the Navy standing up Top gun and leaning some tips on Phantom Phlying, I understood that it is the same as IL2: you lose energy you lose the advantage. YOU LOSE THE ADVANTAGE, YOU LOSE THE FIGHT!!! The Phantom pilots who stood up Top Gun had to re-learn their craft, as in from scratch. Out were the old yank and bank tactics, in were the days of finess and feel. These dudes took ACM and turned it from an art to a science, then presented it in a way that all ofthe Phantom pilots got. After a while, I read, the F-8's no longer enjoyed victories because they only knew tha tthe F-8 could out perform the Phantom in a tight turn. After these men were educated, resisted the temptation of an energy bleed contest, and used the advanteges the F-4 had, it was an easy day every day for the Rhino guys. I am also in agreeance with the not turning bombers into fighters. Even the A-4, which was super agile, could not carry any energy in a fight and was not great. My dad flew them, and he complained a lot about the leading edge slats doing you in a fight because you just slowed down too much, and that little turbofan couldn't hang with an afterburing unit. Now, he also flew Corairs and A-1's, and he learned ACM in the mghty Hog, which was no angel in a turning fight either. you just boomed and zoomed, using that 2400hp engine (he flew -4's in Korea) to carry you around again. He did say that the A-1 would outurn any of the fighters from WWII, so in the "what if" game, the A-1 would be a great one for this argument. What if the A-1 had been built by 1943 instead of 1945? Since it could outturn everything, and it could carry massive ordinance, why couldn't it have taken over every job like the F-4 did? And since it was designed as a bomber, that would satisfy the argument of whether you can turn a bomber into a fighter. Still, as said above, I agree with the statement that you can't. It does seem interesting to think about though. Think about it? All of you real plane "nerds" will be able to quote specs better than I can, but it does seem like a pretty interesting argument. ~Stingray -
This reminds me of a story I read once about a cat in Germany at a USAF base. The cat always showed up at the end of the runway whenever something bad was happening with a plane. One of the times a plane had a main gear stuck up, and the rest would not come back up for a belly landing, very dangerous in an f-84. the cat was there and the plane landed safely on two wheels. The cat kind of became a good luck charm. At some point, years down the road, someone tried to catch it. When they got up to it, it turned and scratched this person and ran away, never to be seen again. He said that the cat was all f'd up lookin, like it had been hit by lightning or something, half of it's face was all jacked. A very strange story. ~Stingray

I didn't think you heard them from inside of the cockpit. I know in Jane's FA you could only hear it on fly-by view. Have you tried that? Also, as with the supercruise post, what altitude are you trying to break the barrier at? At sea level you are looking at over 700mph Also, I found this on Wikipedia: Modern aircraft can transit the "barrier" without it even being noticeable. Stingray

A-10 Skin request
Stingray72 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Hey guys and ~S I am a good ol' boy from the great state of Maryland and I was wondering if someone would be able to do a proper skin for the stock A-10 found in WOE. I am posting a link with this post for ease of searching should anyone decide to hook me up! There are two, one camo and one gray. http://www.fotodigimarco.eu/Aerei/10.08.06/A-10A78-0704.jpg http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/6156/hawk7022vv.jpg http://www.wolverhamptonaviationgroup.co.uk/images/tripp51gathering-a-10_78-0682.jpg http://www.av8rstuff.com/a10pg1.html The last link, if you decide to get sick with it, is for the Oriole mascot on the STBD engine cover. Honestly, the only thing I would need to make me happy is the MD state flag banner on the tail. I love my state's flag, and when I saw that the MD ANG was included in the stock WOE campaigns I was tickled. Imagine my diappointment when I loaded it up and saw the stock banners:( Can someone please please do this one for me? ~Stingray -
IL2+Forgotten Batt+PF ver IL2 1946
Stingray72 replied to aussie1's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
The UP 2.0 you are going to want to get from Torrent, but here is the 4.09 patch from the official !c website: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=10276 DO NOT GET 4.09 FROM TORRENT!!! Just click whichever is appropriate for where you are located, language you speak, etc.... Here is a link to an info website explaining all of the versions and what not: http://home.comcast.net/~Hanzblixz/DownloadGuide.htm Now, Shotdown has it right, the 2.0 is a huge enhancement mod. It upgrades sounds, flame effects, bullet effects, gunsights, catapult mods, new maps, and best of all.....PLANES!!!! F9F, Sabre jet, MiG-15, 5 new versions of the P-38, Korean version P-51's, some really cool stuff m8. It's not just for online, it's everytime!! Just be careful loading down the F9F on carrier take off, she is a heavy pig..... Stingray -
Hi! I am interested in flying WOI with some people, but have only flown a few times online. I have noticed that it is kind of hollow playing SF online, so I am open tyo new ideas. I see you fly Falcon 4.0 and MS. Please tell me as much as you are able, your website is pretty neato and I am interested in learning more before I make a commitment to anything these days lol. ~Stingray

Hi all and ~S!!! I recently left the 11th VAF and would like to change my name, but keep my posts and profile and not have to go through the whole getting a new email address just to get a new name on here. I poked around and could not find who to contact privatey so I am posting on here for help. Can someone tell me who I need to talk to for this? ~Stingray_72 (ps, if you can do it, then the name I put above is the name requested lol)

Really? All I have to do is change my own name? I'll check it out, thank you!! ~Stingray

IL2+Forgotten Batt+PF ver IL2 1946
Stingray72 replied to aussie1's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
If you have a way to get them off of your old machine then yes!! I had the same exact problem lol. Do yourself a favor and just get the 1946 and patch it up. You might want to go ahead and do the UP 2.0, which is a game switcher / teak deal. If that's not your thing then fine, just patch it up to 4.09m, that's what many of the servers are going to now. You can find a lot of forums about this stuff on M4T. I hopes of not sounding like I am dogging this site, because that is not the case, but M4T is a better site for the IL2 series, as this is better for SF it seems. Once you have whatever installed, you can cut or copy whatever files you want to into your new 1946 folders. They go in the same spots as once you get into the directory it is all named the same as the earlier series. See, that cool thing about IL2 is even when they change versions and what not, it is really just a huge patch, more or less. It all stays the same. For example, if you had a cool mission in your single player campaign folder, say for the UK, then you just pull it and follow the same exact path to the same exact folder in 1946: ubisoft>1946>missions>campaigns>.......then whatever country it was for, in this case, UK. Hope this helps you out! ~Stingray -
Sparkomatic, I just put up a post and wanted to share here as well. It was about a book called "Wings Of Eagles" and it was about 12 Navy fighter pilots who put together Top Gun. They were hand selected, the first few hand picked, then they picked through the community, and got together, did studies, talked to engineers, blah blah, great book. I read you post about your USAF boss and thought of something I read in the book. The Has Donut program. The USAF got their hands on a MiG 21 and a MiG 17. Pretty neato, they ran tests with it, then turned them over to the Navy. Now the USAF did about even on kill ration in the tests, the Navy did way better. The Navy also invited Brigadier General Robin Olds (17 kills total, 4 in the F-4) to fly along, see what the Navy was doing different. He didn't change anyhting, he flew his way, the USAF way, and got waxed over and over again. The concensus was that the USAF was afraid to fly the Phantom to it's limits. Not afraid like terrified, but gunshy: Everytime there was an accident there was an investigation, usually a wing commander or base CO was relieved, so the rules were NO ACM. PERIOD. The Navy had some Admirals and Captains that could read the writting written everwhere, even on the ceiling lol, and when an accident happened in training they would send a message explaining the accident, but alos stating that this was a part of training. It's a dangerous environment with lots of things that can go wrong. The USAF didn't have a school like Top Gun either, they didn't understand fully the stall characteristics of the F-4, didn't understand the slight burbles the plane would give you before she departed (5 per second was a good number according to Mel Holmes), they flat out did not know how to use it. All of Steve Ritchies kills were missile shots from dead astern, no real engagements. Randy Cunningham, however, had all 5 of his kills as serious encounters, using techniques he learned at Top Gun to come out on top. If you want to read about what is probably the last real US ACM engagement, go find some stuff on hiw shooting donw of the infamous Col. Toom, who may have been a myth, but the dogfight was for real, a 5 minute engagement with an adversary who knew his plane and his craft very well. Cunningham was actually lucky to have survived because of mistakes he made, and this man knew ACM better than most pilots in that era. One thing I will say too is that while these Navy pilots learned some good stuff for 1v1 hops, they also freely state that the way to go is 2v1 "Loose Deuce" tactics. I'm sorry to call your boss out, especially since I am only an enlisted boat driver in the USCG, but the Air Force just straight up didn't understand their plane. As a result their craft went with it. the Navy and USAF started the war off with a crappy 2:1 kill ratio. The Navy turned it around to 11:1 at the war's end, the USAF was still sitting on 2:1. This speaks volumes. ~Rob

Me, Cliff, and a book. Phantom Jocks Unite!
Stingray72 replied to Stingray72's topic in Air Combat School
I read Wings Of Fury and it was a very good book, but it was not as informative as this one, at least not in the context thatI am talking about. I will explaing lol..... When I first started playing WOV, I had an enthusiasts knowledge of the F-4, ie, I knew it was fast as heck and that I should not attempt to turn with a MiG. That said, we all like to think we know more and tryi it anyways. I got clobbered most days, MiGs could catch me running, I didn't get how it worked, just that the Phantom was faster and more technologically capable. I also found that I could not get my missiles to work except for maybe 10% of the time. In the book it is explained how the missile envelopes affect the probability of a hit. Sindwinders won't hit a target turning hard, wasn't designed for that, you have to wait until the MiG is flying straight, or, if turning, reverses to get him with a heat seeker. I learned that from reading the book. I also learned how to stay with a MiG, which kind of forces him to reverse. It all ties in lol. Cliff, after you finish the book and try some stuff out, post some comments and let folks know if it helped or not. As for me, I rarely ger shot down by AI MiGs now, it was that helpful. I learned lead turns, escape manuevers spefically designed for the Phantom, how to make her climb like they say she does andhow to use the power as an advantage. Like I said, I am sure that the older heads know this stuff, but us new guys have not had this stuff explained to us, at least not in the layman's detail that htis book provides. Do youself a favor, check it out!! ~Rob -

Another newbie question...
Stingray72 replied to amariani's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yes!! The Harrier model I downloaded on here hovers, you just have to know how to do it. I am not saying I can do it proficiently, but I can make the plane hover to some degree and land with most of my foward motion gone. Here is the one I grabbed: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=6681 As for the F-35, well, such an ugly plane shall never be flown from my desk lol....... ~Taxman
