Question for history buffs about German plane colors
SGCSG1 posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Just watched a pretty bad movie, 'Von Richthoven and Brown'. Aside from being a pretty bad movie (quite amateurish editing, for one thing) it had lots of historical inaccuracies. For example, saying it was Richthoven instead of Erwin Bohme who hit Boelcke's plane, causing his death. One of the German pilots was saying, 'I wish we could change these ridiculous plane colors, the English can see us for miles'. So what is the story on the BRIGHT COLORS the Germans used in WW1? Was it just vanity? Was there some reason for painting your plane with these bright colors and outrageous color schemes? Any comments? -
A Kill Claim Change I Have Implemented In My DiD Campaigns
SGCSG1 replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I absolutely hate the whole 'claims' thing. I know it's supposed to 'increase immersion'. I just find it a PITA. I think if it was optional it would be better. This sim already has the hard-core grognards, if sales are to continue I think it has to be less 'hair-shirt'. That you have to write up something this detailed is just NUTS: "20/;4/;1916 ;15h;8 ;Flanders ;Abeele ;Patrol Friendly Front Lines ; Flying: Airco DH2. On this day claims: ;1 ;Roland CII . ;During afternoon patrol, flying at 7,200', I became separated from my flight in heavy cloud cover. Dove down under clouds to take a bearing and encountered two enemy B/R planes, (Roland type), slightly above and ahead of me at about 6,000' and just our side of the front lines. EA were heading northwest towards Ypres and were attempting to use the cloud base as cover. I turned after them and followed for approximately five minutes. I engaged both as they began an attack on Bailleul Town aerodrome. Put approximately 120 rounds into the trailing craft, which began smoking badly and shortly thereafter fell into a vrille and was seen to crash in the woods just south of the airfield, at 15:02. I managed to inflict some minor damage to the upper starboard wing of the second EA, but he flew away to the east and I had to break off the attack and land at Bailleul Town due to a punctured petrol line. Was greeted by Flt. Cmdr. Archibald Blevins, who congratulated me and noted he would personally provide confirmation of the kill. He was also kind enough to place a guard around the downed aircraft, and had his mechanician repair the petrol line on my Airco and check it over for my return flight. Phoned back to squadron and had a lorry despatched to cart the EA back to camp for inspection. Witnessed by: Ground Witness Archibald Blevins Status : Confirmed ;" And if I were a potential customer, hanging around these forums, doing research trying to decide if I wanted to bother to buy this game (which requires buying ANOTHER game FIRST) I would just say, 'this is too much, forget it'. -
I'm trying to figure out why my snap views don't always work. You know, the keypad '2' to look down, '8' to look up, etc. It seemed they only worked when I had a plane targeted. But sometimes they do work when I don't have a plane targeted. Sometimes they don't work at all. Any suggestions what I could be doing wrong here? I've been spending lots of time going into the keyboard list and then trying stuff out. This 'intermittant snap view' thing is about the last thing I'm having a problem with. Thanks for any comments.

I just put some guys engine on fire and he managed to land. I landed next to him, just for the heck of it. A WW1 'simulation/role-playing game' would be fun.

I see a potential ROF/OFF competition brewing that could get ugly.

Very nice, thanks for the link.

Advice needed for changing avatar

I'm having a similar problem. Changed to a GIF and logged out and back in. -
This happens when I've padlocked a plane which has crashed. If I 'undo' the padlock, everything works fine again. Another mystery solved.

It's happened to me several times. I'll have a plane padlocked and it crashes. Then, my snap view and pan views do not work anymore. AT ALL. If I bring up the TAC and select another plane (a wingman, usually), then my snap and pan views START WORKING again. Very strange. These views are views, they should just work, right?

Too bad, this looks like a great pic. But the zip won't unzip. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=9147

I did, I wonder if it got caught in a spam-filter.

You mean....it gets BETTER THAN THIS? Is that possible?

Guys, if you haven't done it already....OFF. Seriously. It's amazing.

Views stop working - is this a bug?

THANK YOU! -
Do the Wingman Commands actually DO ANYTHING in OFF?

Excuse me, what is P4?

The views are counter intuitive, but with some work you'll get to use them fine. The most important thing is to go into the keyboard mapping. You'll notice some important items are not mapped to any key. Like 'virtual cockpit' or 'front view' or whatever it's called. There are many keys that we don't use anymore (b for brakes, for example) so I've grabbed some of them for things we do use. I have done pretty extensive re-mapping and it works much better for me now. Virtual cockpit = F1 Spot view = F2 Chase View = F3 Cycle View = F4 HUD = F5 Float view = F6 Goto Gunner = F9 Goto Pilot = F10 Flyby = F11 Player/target = F12 Lables = L Screenshot = P Target friend = F Prev friend = Shift + F Stop Engine = B (that's mixture idle cutoff) Ctl-Shift-I = brackets (that's an interesting key, try it when you have a target selected Read the sticky on OFF: Tips and Cheats. You won't get the padlock working without a good understanding of the TAC screen. You have to select a target to be able to padlock it. There are 'snap' views and I believe you can change them to PAN by holding scroll-lock, but I'm not sure how that works (I'm a 'snap' view kinda guy, so I don't mess with scrolling). Go to the keyboard controls in the game, see what's there. Right down things you want. Delete things you don't. Experiment, experiment, experiment.

Perhaps you were hearing the Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, a very famous piece of classical music (It was played at FDR's funeral). It is also used in the movie 'Platoon' and is used sometimes in the OFF menus, I'm not sure just when. If it was slow and very sad, that's it.

Does it ever make you dizzy? I can play flight sims, but FPS's...I'm ready to fall over in about 2 minutes. I'm intrigued by TrackIR, but worry I'll get dizzy. It's not easy being a DIMS (Doom induced motion sickness) sufferer.

It sounded great, again, very surprising quality of voice acting for a 'mod' game. The polish on this thing never ceases to amaze me. But on my fairly extravagent (for a computer system) stereo it was pretty LOUD.
-
Best graphics I've ever seen. Would you buy a console to play a sim? It's less than I paid for my last video card. IL-2 Birds of Prey Video What do you think? That terrain is amazing and the detail on the planes is the best I've seen.

The music in this game is terrific, but just for nostalgia's sake I just replaced the main menu music with....the original Red Baron music. What a blast from the past. This is fun!
-
I continue to play OFF:BH&H when I have the time and this sim just amazes me. Who ever thought we could get a WW1 sim with this level of quality from a conversion of an old MS game? The people who put this together are simply wizards. And the polish on this thing is amazing, the music, the artwork. It's a fantastic sim. Thanks to all who've contributed to it. (And thanks to combatace for giving us such a nice home for this forum).

We need to get the word out! I'm in an F-16 online squadron, I'll post something in our forum.

Stargate Command - SG1. That make it easier to remember?
